Since 1996, Yo La Tengo have led a growing number of bands donating their time and talent for the benefit of freeform, college and community radio. Here we are in 2009 and YLT are to reliably continue their annual tradition of gearing up to play covers for pledges during WFMU’s annual fundraising marathon.

Tomorrow, Friday March 13, from 8-11 PM EST, Pseu Braun and Gaylord Fields are to host Yo La Tengo (alongside Bruce Bennett) in their covers-for-cash campaign.

Tune in at 91.1 FM in the tri-state or online at www.wfmu.org and pony up to hear YLT’s takes on your favorites.

Times New Viking (heart) the Velvets

This past Saturday at the Wexner Center for the Arts, on the campus of THE Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, Times New Viking offered a Valentine to rock and roll and modern art, closing out the museum’s six-month-running Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms exhibition with a set of cover songs by the incomparable Velvet Underground.

Joined by Ohio rock legend Mike “Rep” Hummel (guitar/voice) and noise/avant man-about-many-towns C. Spencer Yeh (violin), TNV led an enthusiatic crowd through early Velvets classics including “All Tomorrow’s Parties”, “Sunday Morning”, “Venus in Furs” and a show-stopping “Heroin”, with Rep on lead vocals. Set-list courtesy of Beth TNV:

The show actually concluded with an acoustic “After Hours” singalong, featuring members of opener Psychedelic Horseshit as well as a vocal contribution from the one and only Ron House.

On a Valentine’s Day in Central Ohio, Times New Viking channeled the deposed spirit of rock and roll’s greatest band, and moved the crowd, melding their own distinctive blast-first-second-and-third rock mentality to classic jams never far from anyone’s heart.

Vintage Pavement videos to Brighten your day

Oh today.

Today brings us the super-deluxe over-the-fucking-top-sensational (seriously) reissue of the greatest album of 1997.

The first time we put out “Brighten the Corners”, we paid some up-and-comers to make music videos for the album’s first two cuts. Here’s what Spike Jonze (“Shady Lane”) and Jon Kelsey (“Stereo”) did with our money:

Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater In-store at Criminal Records!

Shearwater on WNYC and KCMP

(live at Johnny Brenda’s, Philadelphia, 6/17/08 – photo taken from countfeed‘s flickr stream)

If you missed Shearwater on KCMP or WNYC back in June, you can now listen to these sessions online.

Shearwater returned for a second appearance on WNYC’s Soundcheck on June 16. To listen, follow this link. The band played “Rooks” and “Leviathan, Bound” in a special stripped-down form.

On June 25 they performed live on The Current on Minnesota Public Radio in Minneapolis. Hear more live versions, as well as discussions on the history of the Falklands and the stigma against “twitchers”, here.

Record Store Day: extended version. Part One: Reckless Records

Hi Matablog Readers!

I started a tour today supporting Jamie Lidell and I’m in Chicago at the Abbey Pub awaiting soundcheck. Because I enjoyed participating in Record Store Day so much earlier this year, I’ve decided to visit local record stores in some of the cities we are playing and find out the answers to some important questions. This is my way of continuing to celebrate all the awesome record stores throughout the country.

Today, we went to Reckless Records in Wicker Park and talked with Dan.

Dan and I

JO’C: How long have you worked at Reckless?

Dan: About 4 years.

JO’C: What did you have for lunch?

Dan: A chicken flatbread sandwich from 7-11.

JO’C: Do you have favorite restaurant in the area?

Dan: I’m not really a foodie, but I like this Middle Eastern place down the street called Sultan’s Market.

JO’C: Do you have a favorite record of all-time and if so, what is it?

Dan: Hmmmm……

JO’C: Am I putting you on the spot? We can come back to this one.

Dan: Ok, let’s come back to it.

JO’C: What record are you guys selling a lot of this week?

Dan: The new Portishead.

JO’C: Any thoughts on your fave record yet?

Dan: I’ll say Daydream Nation, but if you ask me tomorrow, it might be something else.

JO’C: Fair enough. Anything you’d like to add, that you’d like the Matablog readers to know?

Dan: I don’t think so.

JO’C: Ok. Thanks for talking to me. I think those are all the hard-hitting questions I have.

Ok! Tomorrow is Toronto and if we have time….we’ll be hitting up a store there too.

JO’C, record-store-reporter, signing off.
