* Some more information on “Black Eyes.” Every track on The Golden Archipelago is associated with an island somewhere around the world, in this case the buried South Pacific city of Nan Madol, off the eastern shore of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. The name means “spaces between” – it was actually a series of artificial islands linked by a network of canals, and inhabited until about 1500 A.D. The city was gradually abandoned and exists today in a state of decay and can only be visited by governmental permission.

The band have completed work on the limited-edition dossier that explains and enlarges upon the themes of the album. Contents range from the national anthem of the displaced Bikini Atoll islanders to photos of isolated islands where animals remain unafraid of human beings. The dossier is 73 full-color 8 1/2 X 10″ sheets in a stamped envelope. You still have to the end of January to donate to secure your own copy (via

The Golden Archipelago Limited Edition Dossier

In conjunction with the release of Shearwater’s new album, The Golden Archipelago, singer Jonathan Meiburg and designer Mark Ohe have created a beautiful, full-color, 75-page, 8 x 10.5” dossier as a companion piece that you can obtain only through

1_dossier_interd_stampsThe dossier is a visual guide to the world of the album, primarily composed of photographs and documents collected by JM from islands and other singular places around the world. Among its pages are the national anthem of Bikini Atoll, the story of a charming and fatally obsessed German aviator and explorer, notes from the daily life of a remote Aboriginal village occupied by missionaries, and photographs from an island Jules Verne considered “The End of the World,” where endangered animals remain unafraid of humans. It also features production credits and full lyrics for The Golden Archipelago and its B-sides.

The dossier’s loose, numbered pages will come packaged in a personalized, numbered, heavy-duty envelope fastened with a string tie.

Included here are some images from the dossier. You can also view these images here

And as previously posted, The Golden Archipelago CD (February 23) comes packaged with a redesigned 50-page booklet that is a set of extracts from the dossier. LP pre-orders via our store will ALSO receive a copy of this CD-sized perfect bound book.

Shearwater – First MP3 from The Golden Archipelago, preorder, dossier, tour dates

“The Golden Archipelago” is the third album in a triptych of mindblowingly beautiful, dense and ambitious excursions about man’s impact on the natural world from Austin’s SHEARWATER.

This time singer-songwriter Jonathan Meiburg turns his attention to life on islands – a world of lushness and austerity, silence and sudden cataclysms. From rising sea levels to displaced populations, Meiburg travels from the Falklands to Madgascar, from the Bikini Atoll to the Tierra Del Fuego.

The music matches the grandeur and melancholy of its subject matter. This is a true album in the larger sense of the word. Meiburg’s soaring vocals and complex song structures recall opuses like Kate Bush’s “Hounds Of Love,” Hüsker Dü’s “Zen Arcade” and classic Pink Floyd.

The CD comes packaged with a 50-page perfect-bound book that is a set of extracts from a dossier of records, photos, regulations and images collected by Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg. The LP contains 2 bonus tracks & an MP3 download coupon (that includes the album + PDF of the dossier). (Note: LP pre-orders will ALSO receive a copy of the CD-sized perfect bound book.)

Serious researchers will have a way to obtain the actual, full-sized, full-color 73-page dossier in its special envelope – this will be announced soon, so keep your eyes on this space.

Preorder the album, and get a 15% discount plus the extras noted above.

Below is the first MP3 from The Golden Archipelago, “Castaways.” You can just play the MP3, or you can download a zip file containing either a 256K MP3 or a FLAC of the track, along with a digital single artwork and some images from book extracts of the dossier:

The Cave Singers & Shearwater in Holy Communion

Just a friendly reminder that tonight there’s a Matador double header in London.  Having played the shopping mall interior at this weekend’s ATP vs The Fans, we felt the need for a more illustrious setting for Shearwater and The Cave Singers – the beautiful Union Chapel in Islington.  You can see The Cave Singers from 8pm and Shearwater say grace from 9pm.

Many thanks for Fiona Diffley for photos from this weekend.

Shearwater : Yellow Bike Project Benefit, May 21

Though Shearwater are in the midst of recording the followup to 2008’s ‘Rook‘, the band are taking time from a busy international schedule to play a May 21 benefit for Austin’s Yellow Bike Project at Red 7.  YBP is  is a community supported ALL-VOLUNTEER 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing human-powered transportation for the people of Austin, running a community bike shop, and educating kids and adults.  Here’s some more info courtesy a recent KLRU documentary short ;

Shearwater, Mogwai Confirmed For All Points West

Crazy rock fest season is most def. upon us, and us such, you can look forward to the Matablog being routinely scooped this spring and summer by concert promoters and other rockblogs announcing which of our bands are playing in a big field somewhere.  Today’s joyous news has Shearwater playing the 2nd edition of the All Points West festival (Liberty State Park, NJ) on July 31, on a bill topped by the Beastie Boys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Vampire Weekend.

Two days later, Mogwai — about to start a US tour two weeks from today in Houston — will play the Sunday, August 2 version of APW II , on a bill headlined by Coldplay, Echo & The Bunnymen and MGMT.

Finally, we’ve neglected to mention previously that Shearwater are playing Austin, TX tomorrow night (March 31) in support of Neko Case at Stubb’s.

The week of Shearwater commences, SiriusXM Loft Sessions kick it off

On top of all their SXSW activities, Austin’s finest sons (and daughter) Shearwater will be featured five times this week on SiriuXM Loft Sessions. These sessions can be heard on Sirius 29 and XM 50 and will air at the following times. Listen in to hear the genius. All times Eastern, by the way.

Monday 3/16: 12Noon
Wednesday 3/18: 2:00PM
Friday 3/20: 3:00AM
Saturday 3/21: 12:00Noon
Monday 3/23: 1:00AM

Matador’s Slimmer-Than-Usual SXSW Schedule

The (cough) executive branch of Matador Records and Filmworks will be attending South By Southwest in Austin this week, and while the label isn’t putting on a huge gig of our own, we fully intend to gatecrash everyone else’s (this is not, btw, an solicitation for invites to sundry booshit showcases — we already run the risk of missing bands we’re nuts about, such is the overload over 4 nights).  However, two members of our glittering roster will be making offish festival appearances :

SHEARWATER – 1am Friday, March 20 18th Floor, Hilton Garden

JAGUAR LOVE – 8:45pm, Thursday, March 19, Beauty Bar (I Heart Comix)

In addition, Shearwater will be performing at Mojo Magazine’s annual BBQ (Saturday afternoon, Mean Eyed Cat) and Jaguar Love will be playing the MySpace/Blacksheep Fellowship party at the Cedar Door (201 Brazos Street) on Thursday afternoon.  Neither of those shows are officially sanctioned SXSW events and as such, you’ll not need a badge or wristband to attend.

If you’re looking for more fun things to do in Austin this week, the venerable Showlist is one of the better sources for (relatively) accurate / up-to-date info regarding shows, parties, etc. that won’t require SXSW credentials (or in many cases, an admission fee).

Intended Play sampler Fall 2008: ready to download and burn

Our spring Intended Play label download sampler was a huge hit, so we’re doing it again. Just like before, you get a track from one of each of our current and upcoming releases. Seven of the tracks have not been released on MP3 yet, and four of those are from albums that haven’t been released yet. The sampler this time is a bit more varied musically, from A.C. Newman’s jewel-like pop songscapes to the majestic neo-punk of Fucked Up to the gorgeous female vocals of Jennifer O’Connor to a track from Lou Reed’s painstaking, thoughtful, first-ever performance of his controversial classic album ‘Berlin.’ We also introduce an unreleased song from Pavement’s ‘Brighten The Corner’ sessions, due out on the deluxe edition of that album in November.

Click on the link to get a zipped file of all 13 tracks plus front and back artwork, and burn it yourself (or just listen to it digitally). And support the bands and the label… if you like the track, click on the album title link below to buy (or preorder) the album (or more individual tracks) directly from us.

Find below, your guide to the official and unofficial CMJ Marathon showcases featuring a trio of Matador acts: Shearwater, Jay Reatard and Mission of Burma.

We’ll see you out!
