Chelsea Light Moving present “Groovy & Linda”

A ways back we shared the track “Burroughs” from Thurston Moore’s new group, Chelsea Light Moving, hinting at more tunes to follow.  Here’s the second track from the group, “Groovy & Linda“… take it away, TM….

Has returned!! From sick 4-date international (Canada-USA) tour!! New song for free for all — ! _–

It is called:  GROOVY & LINDA [192kbps mp3]

Not to be confused with the 1968 coffee house folk song by Tom Parrott (recorded for Smithsonian Folkways), this chug n’ shred burner is a psycho reflection of late 60s NYC East Village hippie idealism slayed and splayed in an Avenue B tenement boiler room. Groovy was the boy born James Leroy Hutchinson from modest American means and Linda was Linda Fitzpatrick, she from a privileged nuclear household, both runaways to the lysergic pulchritude of peace, love and marijuana. When The Fugs went on tour in 1967 ringleader Ed Sanders enlisted Groovy to care take his Peace Eye bookstore at a “secret location on the lower east side” (E. 10th St., actually). An incredible underground poetry bookstore/art gallery/hip hang out and orgy hook up scene, Groovy turned it into a barefoot mantra crash pad for all the beautiful zonkers and speed freaks of alphabet city. It was hard for even a grouch like Sanders to get too miffed at Groovy who actually believed in the wild animal dreams of hippie. Groovy was in love with Linda, a starry-eyed goddess nymph and they were the power flower couple of Tompkins Square. Tragedy flapped its nightmare wings and the two were found brutally beaten and killed bathed in blood and mystery amidst their tie-dye rags and rolling papers. It signaled the end of the fairytale that the media presented in day-glo color come-hitherness in the pages of Life and Look magazine. The following year Charles Manson and his dune buggy motherfuckers would exact an even farther cry of chaos and killing in the bamboozled hills of Los Angeles. We, Chelsea Light Moving, want to mantra the names of these two angels of beauty, regardless of the cynicism and naïveté of youth, for these are the charms of the soul. “Don’t shoot!!” —– we are your children……

“Burroughs” is the first track from a session recorded in the wilds of Western Massachusetts in the springtime of 2012. It was inspired by the last words of the gentleman who wrote the most significant experimental novels of the late 20th century (Naked Lunch, Soft Machine, The Ticket That Exploded etc.) – writer William S. Burroughs (“Love? What is it? Most natural painkiller what there is.”). After sitting in the orgone box planted in Burroughs’ back yard of Lawrence, Kansas in the midpoint of the 1990s, Thurston Moore came to the realization that at some point he’d need to form a band that played Burroughs Rock. This is the sound of Wild Boys looking to jack hypos of core passion into their veins. Boy on boy. Girl on girl. Start there. It’s not even music – it’s an amphetamine sonnet for the on-the-loose lovers of the world. Chelsea Light Moving will play your town. Right now we’re playing Friday June 22 2012 at the Sled Island bizarro freak slam in Calgary, Alberta near where Neil Young used to skinny dip when he was a laser-brained teen. Then we play Missoula, hometown of zero pop hate puppy Steve Albini. Then we play Boulder and Denver Colorado before Thurston settles down for a week of teaching at the summer writing workshop at Naropa University. Also on the faculty are Amiri Baraka and Anne Waldman, which means: More tunes, more damage. Another song comes yr way in a week, even sicker.

“Burroughs” was recorded and mixed May 18-20, 2012, by Justin Pizzoferrato at Sonelab, Easthampton, MA.

Upcoming Thurston Moore US dates:
June 24 – Missoula, MT The Top Hat
June 27 – Bouler, CO Boulder Theater
June 29 – Denver, CO Larimer Lounge

Ceremony covered The Ramones and are still on tour!

During the recording sessions for Zoo, Ceremony found some time to knock out covers of some of the tracks that we speculate may have had some impact on the sound of their recent stuff. If you picked up the Hysteria 7″, you heard their take on The Urinals’ “I’m A Bug”, and right now, in conjunction with a giveaway for Ceremony’s show at Warsaw (in Brooklyn) tonight, Noisey have the track on offer for download. Give their cover of The Ramones’ “I Don’t Wanna Be Learned/I Don’t Wanna Be Tamed” a listen here.

and as the title suggests, Ceremony are STILL on tour! Go see them!

TEAR UP YOUR SCHEDULES : The Young’s -‘Dub Egg’ Moved To June 12

In what’s an unusually prominent way of plugging The Young’s upcoming April 14 show at Austin’s Red 7 in support of Frankie Rose, the Matador  Scheduling Committee — an august body of wise persons usually entrusted with determining the travel arrangements for indoor pro lacrosse leagues and selecting the “secondary markets” in which Arby’s will test market a vegan seitan sub — has announced the forthcoming ‘Dub Egg’ LP/CD/digital album is being moved back to Tuesday, June 12.  We’ll have some June US tour dates to announce shortly — just as soon as the scheduling committee (see above) gives us the go-ahead.

Intended Play 2012 – For The Vinyl-Phobic Amongst, The Price Just Dropped From $2 To Free

(I really don’t see the resemblance)

Back in early January WE SHOCKED THE MUSIC WORLD with news of a $1.98 Matador/True Panther Sounds sampler LP including (mostly) new songs from The Young, Ceremony, Lee Ranaldo Tanlines, Perfume Genius, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Fucked Up, Girls, Cold Cave, Esben and The Witch and Kurt Vile. It’s come to our attention that a) there’s a few stragglers out there who’ve yet to order this limited edition LP, and b) some of you either trashed your record players or simply prefer music in digital form.

So here’s the deal — you can still order the vinyl version from The Matador Store or hound your local retailer who might’ve filed it in THE $2 BIN.  Failing that, here’s a free download of the entire compilation. You’re welcome!

Coming May 8 : The Young – ‘Dub Egg’ LP/CD/digital album

As mentioned in this space almost 8 months ago, Austin-based quartet The Young were signed to Matador last June hot on the heels of a startling debut album for Mexican Summer and a prior appearance on this label’s ‘Casual Victim Pile’ compilation.  At the time, a somewhat arrogant label functionary claimed that existing works by The Young were “only skimming the surface” of what they were capable of, and while that’s a bold prediction, I’m happy to report I WAS ONE THOUSAND PERCENT CORRECT.

On May 8, we’ll be releasing The Young’s 2nd full-length album, ‘Dub Egg’, and if ‘Voyagers Of Legend’ was a major stylistic shift from the band’s earliest singles for Criminal IQ and Super Secret, the new record bears little relation to album #1.  Guitarist/vocalist Hans Zimmerman, bassist Jason Costanszo, guitarist Kyle Edwards and drummer Ryan Maloney adjourned to an actual cabin-in-the-woods (see Hans’ notes below) and the resulting, self-produced effort is the sort of expansive, guitar masterclass (never at the expense of terrific songs, mind you) they’ve only hinted at previously.  Having yet to visit major portions of this continent since the release of ‘Voyagers’ (record industry gun-to-the-head junkets aside), we’re pretty conscious of the fact many of you reading this have neither seen nor heard The Young ; placing ‘Dub Egg’s ‘Don’t Hustle For Love” at the start of the recently released ‘Intended Play’ $2 sampler LP was one way of addressing that.  Another is the strategic leak of the album’s first song, “Livin’ Free”.

The YoungLivin’ Free (192k MP3)

(l-r : Ryan, Hans, Jason, Kyle. photo by Ben Aqua)

We did the main tracking at the isolated Creekside Cabin in Vanderpool Texas (western Bandera County).

We took a mountain of amps and guitars, 1” 16 track tape machine, loads of beer and holed up for 5 days in August. When we weren’t rolling tape we were fishing, bbqing, and playing horseshoes.

Additional recording/overdub/mixing happened at our east Austin rehearsal space/studio ‘blood and guts’ where an Otari 8 track was employed for several cuts (purchased off an old cruise ship with casual victim pile money, btw).  The album was mixed and cut to tape by me, and was the first time I’ve ever done that.

The title comes from a bizarre dream Kyle had involving the master tapes, an improvised King Tubby technique, and a soft-boiled egg.

We’ll be posting pre-order info for ‘Dub Egg’ shortly, along with information about The Young’s activities in Austin next month (those sanctioned by SXSW and otherwise). Post release North American touring is being booked as of this writing, and we’ll be sharing those dates as well.

Lee Ranaldo – “Off The Wall”, First MP3 from the forthcoming ‘Between The Times & The Tides’

As mentioned in this space a few weeks ago,
on March 20 we’lll be releasing Lee Ranaldo’s first song-based solo full-length, ‘Between The Times & The Tides’ on LP, CD and digital formats. While we’ve cited the songcraft,  the “shimmering and melodic tapestry of sounds” the assembly of ‘a terrific new band right under our noses’, none of that does much good until you’re given a hint exactly what we’re shouting about. And without further technical difficulties ado, here’s “Off The Wall”

Tanlines “Mixed Emotions” Out on True Panther 3.20.12

Brooklyn, NY’s Tanlines will release their debut album, Mixed Emotions, on our imprint True Panther Sounds on March 20th, 2012. It was recorded in various NYC home studios and mixed in Miami by legendary mixing engineer Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland, Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Television, Roxy Music). Mixed Emotion’s first taste, “Brothers,” is available for download from their site or direct download below…

Tanlines- Brothers (mp3)

Anyone well-versed with New York City’s diverse music scene for the last few years knows Mixed Emotions is a long time coming. Since their first song hit the web in 2008, Tanlines – comprised of Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass) – have been steadily releasing genius dance singles with labels across the globe, including True Panther, Young Turks and Kitsune. Their live show has taken them worldwide, playing at the likes of The Guggenheim, The Whitney and more in their hometown, as well as an opening slot on Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas’s solo tour in 2009. But it was an ill-fated European tour – filled with some of the most disappointing shows of their respective careers – that ultimately led to Mixed Emotion’s genesis. The band spent long hours driving through Europe, listening to albums by R.E.M., skate punk records from the 80’s, Born in the USA, and more. As Eric explains it, “Listening to them, I became very aware of the lasting resonance of a good song. A good song transcends production trends. That’s what we were missing, and I wanted to start making songs that would have a life of their own.”

The band returned from Europe only to be greeted with a larger problem: making such songs in Emm’s studio, which was not only the place where they created, but the place where they met prior to forming the band, would be impossible; the building that housed his eight year old studio had been sold. It is ultimately this sense of starting over that helps informs some of Mixed Emotion’s most palpable moments.

Mixed Emotions is a testament to the benefits and pitfalls of life’s changes, getting older, and being pushed out of one’s comfort zone. The band that was born out of a studio suddenly had to become, well, a band. Songs were written simply on a guitar, with the band later adding their palette of electronic and organic sounds afterwards. Emm honed his voice, a confident and tranquil baritone, and focused on lyricism, something he had not done seriously in the past. He sings stories about loss, the passage of time, and the lessons and warnings of accumulated knowledge gleaned by someone who has spent an entire lifetime in music. The process stretched the duo – Cohen likened making the album to that of making a film when it was done – and Mixed Emotions is all the better for it.

Sometimes painful, sometimes transcendent, and ultimately a very precise labor of love, Mixed Emotions simply feels vivid. Songs pulse and linger, filled with percussive textures, bright, warm synths and driving kick drums to juxtapose the album’s lyrical melancholia. The record obscures and blurs the lines between synthetic and organic, real and fake, happy and sad. It is the sound of stadium pop in small spaces. And it is one of the most remarkable debut albums you will hear in 2012.

Tanlines will be playing shows across the U.S. this spring. More info to come!

Ceremony – New album Zoo out in March, listen to Hysteria

Rohnert Park, California’s CEREMONY will be releasing their fourth album, entitled Zoo, on March 6, 2012. Working with producer John Goodmanson, the band have refined their jagged sound while continuing to pursue themes of exurban alienation and confinement. Their previous three albums on the Malfunction and Bridge 9 labels are widely seen as the most compelling, unusual and progressive hardcore of the last five years, and we are incredibly excited to be working with them.

Perfume Genius: new album Put Your Back N 2 It, and new song All Waters

COMING FEBRUARY 21: The second album from Seattle’s PERFUME GENIUS, entitled Put Your Back N 2 It. Perfume Genius, aka Mike Hadreas, is a Seattle singer-songwriter whose 2010 debut Learning established him as one of the most endearing and quietly forceful performers today.

Though Learning’s voyeuristic window into Hadreas’s experiences resonated intensely with many people, Put Your Back N 2 It is much more universal, addressing intimacy, power, family, secrecy, and hope, not just through his impressionistic lyrics, but the music itself, which is as lush as Learning was stark.

Track list:

1. Awol Marine
2. Normal Song
3. No Tear
4. 17
5. Take Me Home
6. Dirge
7. Dark Parts
8. All Waters
9. Hood
10. Put Your Back N2 It
11. Floating Spit
12. Sister Song
