Pre-order Dub Egg from the Matador Store

Shake The Dub Egg

Sometimes we sit around in our marketing brainstorms and wonder what we can do to pull a merch item out of an album campaign to give to our trusty local independent retailers. Often we hit it out of the park. Certain things like our Early Man Condoms or Preston School Of Industry Monsoon Ponchos were instant classics. Still some others just never really stuck, like the time we did the Pavement “Rattle(d By The Rush) Snakes” and had to deal with all of those pesky snakebite victim lawsuits or when we sent record stores envelopes full of actual “Lucky Dirt.”

So when you’ve got an album coming called Dub Egg what better to make than Dub Eggs?

The percussionally inclined of you may recognize an egg shaker when you see one, but surely you’ve never seen a Matador’d egg shaker.
So when you’re out shopping for Dub Egg – the new album from The Young – look out for these at a local indie retailer near you. They’re pretty much the best merch item we’ve made since our Bardo Pond Bongs.

TEAR UP YOUR SCHEDULES : The Young’s -‘Dub Egg’ Moved To June 12

In what’s an unusually prominent way of plugging The Young’s upcoming April 14 show at Austin’s Red 7 in support of Frankie Rose, the Matador  Scheduling Committee — an august body of wise persons usually entrusted with determining the travel arrangements for indoor pro lacrosse leagues and selecting the “secondary markets” in which Arby’s will test market a vegan seitan sub — has announced the forthcoming ‘Dub Egg’ LP/CD/digital album is being moved back to Tuesday, June 12.  We’ll have some June US tour dates to announce shortly — just as soon as the scheduling committee (see above) gives us the go-ahead.

This doesn’t mean, however, you can come over to my house.

Intended Play 2012 – For The Vinyl-Phobic Amongst, The Price Just Dropped From $2 To Free

(I really don’t see the resemblance)

Back in early January WE SHOCKED THE MUSIC WORLD with news of a $1.98 Matador/True Panther Sounds sampler LP including (mostly) new songs from The Young, Ceremony, Lee Ranaldo Tanlines, Perfume Genius, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Fucked Up, Girls, Cold Cave, Esben and The Witch and Kurt Vile. It’s come to our attention that a) there’s a few stragglers out there who’ve yet to order this limited edition LP, and b) some of you either trashed your record players or simply prefer music in digital form.

So here’s the deal — you can still order the vinyl version from The Matador Store or hound your local retailer who might’ve filed it in THE $2 BIN.  Failing that, here’s a free download of the entire compilation. You’re welcome!

Coming May 8 : The Young – ‘Dub Egg’ LP/CD/digital album

As mentioned in this space almost 8 months ago, Austin-based quartet The Young were signed to Matador last June hot on the heels of a startling debut album for Mexican Summer and a prior appearance on this label’s ‘Casual Victim Pile’ compilation.  At the time, a somewhat arrogant label functionary claimed that existing works by The Young were “only skimming the surface” of what they were capable of, and while that’s a bold prediction, I’m happy to report I WAS ONE THOUSAND PERCENT CORRECT.

On May 8, we’ll be releasing The Young’s 2nd full-length album, ‘Dub Egg’, and if ‘Voyagers Of Legend’ was a major stylistic shift from the band’s earliest singles for Criminal IQ and Super Secret, the new record bears little relation to album #1.  Guitarist/vocalist Hans Zimmerman, bassist Jason Costanszo, guitarist Kyle Edwards and drummer Ryan Maloney adjourned to an actual cabin-in-the-woods (see Hans’ notes below) and the resulting, self-produced effort is the sort of expansive, guitar masterclass (never at the expense of terrific songs, mind you) they’ve only hinted at previously.  Having yet to visit major portions of this continent since the release of ‘Voyagers’ (record industry gun-to-the-head junkets aside), we’re pretty conscious of the fact many of you reading this have neither seen nor heard The Young ; placing ‘Dub Egg’s ‘Don’t Hustle For Love” at the start of the recently released ‘Intended Play’ $2 sampler LP was one way of addressing that.  Another is the strategic leak of the album’s first song, “Livin’ Free”.

We took a mountain of amps and guitars, 1” 16 track tape machine, loads of beer and holed up for 5 days in August. When we weren’t rolling tape we were fishing, bbqing, and playing horseshoes.

Additional recording/overdub/mixing happened at our east Austin rehearsal space/studio ‘blood and guts’ where an Otari 8 track was employed for several cuts (purchased off an old cruise ship with casual victim pile money, btw).  The album was mixed and cut to tape by me, and was the first time I’ve ever done that.

The title comes from a bizarre dream Kyle had involving the master tapes, an improvised King Tubby technique, and a soft-boiled egg.

We’ll be posting pre-order info for ‘Dub Egg’ shortly, along with information about The Young’s activities in Austin next month (those sanctioned by SXSW and otherwise). Post release North American touring is being booked as of this writing, and we’ll be sharing those dates as well.

Intended Play 2012, the vinyl bargain of the year & some good music to boot

Today we’re psyched to tell you that OLE-981 is the Matador Records & True Panther Sounds’ 2012 Intended Play Sampler hits shelves on January 14. This (insanely) budget-priced vinyl sampler showcases new tracks and now-classics from the Matador/True Panther syndicate circa 2011-2012, and much like the Cherry Red sampler from which this LP finds inspiration, is destined to rank at #1 on all music retail charts.

Oh, did we mention its costs $1.98!?!

The comp features unreleased tracks from: THE YOUNG (Austin, TX – Matador debut Spring 2012), CEREMONY (Rohnert Park, CA – Hysteria 7” coming February 2012), LEE RANALDO (from
Between the Times & The Tides, March 20), PERFUME GENIUS (sophomore album, Put Your
Back Into It
, February ), STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS (unreleased track from Mirror Traffic
sessions) and True Panther bros, TANLINES.

The album also features 2011 favorites, GIRLS (from Father, Son, Holy Ghost on True Panther), KURT VILE (from So Outta Reach EP), ESBEN & THE WITCH (Hexagons EP, first time on vinyl), FUCKED UP (from the David Comes To Life companion 7″) & COLD CAVE (exclusive re-mix/remaster of the Cherish The Light Years favorite).

Revisit your favorites from 2011, and get a preview of 2012 from your friends at Matador Records and True

The Young (in the Western USA)

The Young are taking a short break from putting finishing touches on their 2nd album — and first for Matador — with a bunch of shows on the West Coast.  Around the time of  Matador’s 21st anniversary shows in Vegas going on sale, we received brutal, vicious criticism from locals who felt their cultural hotbed was routinely being passed over by our touring bands.  OK, then.  The Young are playing Vegas’ Beauty Bar (perhaps the place where the term “truth in advertising” originated) and I fully expect several hundred of the city’s most passionate music fans to be in attendance.

(I also believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and that the Planet Of The Apes movies are a prophecy).

Here’s the full schedule :

Wed 1/4 – Yucca Tap Room, Tempe, AZ
Thu 1/5 – Soda Bar, San Diego, CA
Fri 1/6 – Cellar Door, Visalia, CA
Sat 1/7 – Bottom Of The Hill, SF, CA
Mon 1/9 – The Satellite, Los Angeles
Tue 1/10 – The Smell, Los Angeles
Wed 1/11 – Beauty Bar, Las Vegas, NV
Thu 1/12 – Solar Culture Gallery, Tucson AZ
Fri 1/4 – Mohawk, Austin TX (with Balaclavas)

Two Reminders / Corrections Concerning The Young

a) The Young are playing this Saturday night at Austin, TX’s Emo’s (inside) with Pierced Arrows and Don’t.  This post is simply a cheap excuse to show off the snazzy flyer for the event.

b) the Friday,  November 11 date at the Cake Shop is no longer happening.  Instead, the Young’s first NYC show in nearly a year will take place the same evening supporting Kurt Vile & The Violators at Webster Hall.
