Lee Ranaldo – Solo Acoustic Dates In Europe

By Gerard on Monday, September 8th, 2014

From Lee :

“While the members of The Dust are scattered to the four winds for a little while, I’m undertaking a solo acoustic tour in Europe. The plan is to play selections from the two albums, some covers and hopefully some of the new songs I’m currently working on, and to play them as most of them originated – on acoustic guitars, in stripped down style. Guitar and voice, little or no fuzz. Anyway that’s the plan right now, this will be a further ‘acoustic experiment’ for me. We’ve sought out small capacity, intimate venues with good acoustics for these shows. Hope to see some of you along the way.”

Coming October 21 : Thurston Moore’s ‘The Best Day’

By Gerard on Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

On October 21, Matador will be releasing the latest solo album from Sonic Youth co-founder Thurston Moore, ‘The Best Day’. Recorded in London with his new band — featuring guitarist James Sedwards (Nøught), bassist Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) and SY drummer Steve Shelley, ‘The Best Day’ is a staggeringly confident, expansive work, one that not only rivals much of Moore’s past work, but also suggests his relocation to England has inspired a creative rebirth of sorts. Keep in mind, we’re already dealing with one of the harder working, prolific characters in modern music, rock or otherwise.

“Ambulancer” – A New Song From Lee Ranaldo & The Dust

By Nils on Friday, September 27th, 2013

Lee Ranaldo and his faithful Dust (Steve Shelley, Alan Licht, and Tim Luntzel) revealed the second song of their forthcoming LP “Last Night On Earth” today via Rolling Stone:

Lee tells RS that the song originated acoustically and resembling Neil Young’s “Ambulance Blues,” before morphing & expanding (as most of the songs on this album do) into a beautifully turbulent, darkly melodic guitar freakout.

You can also check out another album track, “Lecce, Leaving,” HERE. “Last Night On Earth” is out October 8.

Out Today : Body/Head – ‘Coming Apart’ double LP/CD/digital album

By Gerard on Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

Pitchfork‘s Marc Masters has called Body/Head’s ‘Coming Apart’, “intoxicating”. Tiny Mix Tapes cites the album’s “unusual synergy, exploration, and focus”, while the New York Times’ Ben Ratliff writes, “there are no wrong notes on ‘Coming Apart’. Nor is there a possibility of any.” Today, you can formulate your own opinion with the format of your choice ; the new album from the duo of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace is in stores (or in some instances, in your mailboxes), and Body/Head will kick off their global touring tonight at Brooklyn’s Union Pool.

Body/Head – ‘Coming Apart’ streaming today at Pitchfork Advance

By Gerard on Monday, September 2nd, 2013

‘Coming Apart’ ; the new 2XLP/CD/digital album from Body/Head, aka Kim Gordon and Bill Nace, is streaming today at Pitchfork Advance, prior to the September 10 release date. Mojo’s Stevie Chick has likened ‘Coming Apart’ to “70 minutes of drone, feedback amp-noise and guitar squall that swings between abstract beauty and rolling turmoil…freeform and improvisational, it’s peaks are primal and powerful.”  The bad news is that Stevie penned the review too late for our sticker copy ; the good news is that you’ll be able to find the album in the abstract beauty bin of your local record shop (or failing that, the rolling turmoil department).   The Wire’s Phil Freeman calls ‘Coming Apart’, “just the thing for listeners who always found Sonic Youth too timid and bound to rock convention,” though we hope he and his publishers do not mind that we’ve edited his quote to read “…just the the thing. For listeners”.

Body/Head – ‘Coming Apart’ double LP / CD – coming September 10

By The Management on Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

(photograph by Annabel Mehran)

Body/Head are an electric guitar duo comprised of Kim Gordon (CKM, Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, etc.) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange, etc.) The pair began working together in various loose formats a few years ago, but the Body/Head concept evolved more specifically in early 2012.

Initially their approach was almost entirely instrumental — lattices of interwoven feedback rainbows, with bits recalling everyone from Heldon to Keiji Haino. They usually performed against a backdrop of slow-motion film projection, creating a dream narrative of undeniable power and visionary reach. Kim’s voice began creeping into the mix soon after, and the vocals now have become an intrinsic part of their musical architecture. They have even started writing and playing “songs” now, compositionally distinct from their purely aleatory origins, but still featuring lots of built-in improvisational space.

Body/Head have also worked with guest artists since their inception. An early session with Michael Morley of The Dead C resulted in the Body/Gate/Head LP ‘Glare Luring Yo’, and live collaborations with Ikue Mori. Ikue has been focusing on electronics as her primary instrument in the decades since the end of her groundbreaking trio DNA, but Kim was able to talk her into trying drums again, and the results have been astounding. Ikue’s percussion grounds the spirals of guitar and vocals with its strong central pulse, allowing everybody to achieve greater heights of musical/visual disorientation.

Body/Head have thus far recorded a single for Dennis Tyfuss’ Ultra Eczema Editions, a tour EP for Nace’s own Open Mouth Productions, and released their collaboration with Morley through Feeding Tube Records. Their next release , ‘Coming Apart’, will be issued as a double LP /CD/digital album by Matador Records on September 10 (September 16 in the United Kingdom and Europe)

Chelsea Light Moving debut “Lip” video

Thurston Moore and his merry band of agitators offer this opening salvo for a springtime revolution, 2013:

A fortnight ago, Chelsea Light Moving played a ridiculous number of Austin shows before and during SXSW in all manner of settings, none of ‘em more hospitable than the warehouse district’s Mellow Johnny’s bicycle emporium. Proprietor Lance Armstrong failed to make an appearance, but we’re told he was contacted mid-set for consultation on the shop’s “you break it, you bought it policy” (on the advice of our lawyers, we’re not showing the footage of Thurston breaking what was apparently a very expensive bike, but we’ll stress it was AN ACCIDENT). Thanks to KEXP for the footage.

Chelsea Light Moving “Empires Of Time” & “Frank O’Hara Hit”

By Robby on Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

The CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING song that was posted July 25 for free entitled Frank O’Hara Hit is actually some other song, by the same band, called Empires Of Time. For your edification and further free-fall into the vortex of confusion we now present you the song Frank O’Hara Hit. The previous message from Thurston Moore pertaining to the intention of this tune is still active. If there’s anything to be known about Empires of Time, know that it is a call of honor, and a kiss on the hallowed forehead, to Roky Erickson of Austin, Texas, a maestro of American psychedelic rock n roll of the highest order.

Go for it,

Thurston Moore

Free Song #3 by Chelsea Light Moving: “Frank O’Hara Hit”

By Robby on Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

[edit: Due to an unfortunate mix up, the track posted here originally on July 25 was the Chelsea Light Moving track "Empires Of Time", this post has now been amended to the correct audio for "Frank O'Hara Hit".]

from on-tour in Europe, Thurston Moore writes:

“Frank O’Hara Hit”

Free Song #3 by

CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING

Today is July 25 and it’s my birthday. I’m 54. This song is called Frank O’Hara Hit. And it’s by this band I started called Chelsea Light Moving. Right now we’re whipping around Europe playing some summer love-cry gigs. I wanted to release this song by the end of July because it’s a meditation on that month through history in events that define a lot of what mytho-romanticizes my heart, both broken and blessed at the moment. On July 25, 1965 Bob Dylan with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band delivered to rock n’ roll the dissident soul of folk music and poetry. For many it was already a viable meeting but Dylan set it on fire for the world to see. And he was famously cursed and booed by the gatekeepers of old ways wariness.  The song he sang was Phantom Engineer (later titled It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry). On July 24, 1966 the NYC poet Frank O’Hara was struck by a dune buggy while hanging out on Fire Island, and died the next day. O’Hara knew poetry in all it’s formalist glory and like John Cage’s ear to music liberated it for writers for an unending time. In his essay Personism: A Manifesto (published in Leroi Jones’ Yugen magazine in 1961) he writes, “I don’t … like rhythm, assonance, all that stuff. You just go on your nerve. If someone’s chasing you down the street with a knife you just run, you don’t turn around and shout, ‘Give it up! I was a track star for Mineola Prep’…As for measure and other technical apparatus, that’s just common sense: if you’re going to buy a pair of pants you want them to be tight enough so everyone will want to go to bed with you. There’s nothing metaphysical about it.” On July 26, 1943 Mick Jagger was born in Dartford, Kent, England and would become the 20th century’s erotic pinup for the unsafety of teeny bop girls everywhere preaching the gospel soaked blues of African-American music that their parents were most likely frightened to death of. His skill in getting it and keeping it together and continuing to honor the magic that rocks the fuck out when Howlin’ Wolf hit the mic is what inspires every tantalizing facet of real rock n’ roll. On July 29, 1966 our hero Bobby Dylan crashed his motorbike while taking it for a spin in Woodstock He had just recorded three lightning rod LPs (Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde), a book of writing (Tarantula) and was taking a breather between a just finished nine month world tour (where he was facing audiences half pissed at his “Judas!” betrayal of folk purity) and readying for sixty-four American gigs booked by money hog Albert Grossman. He was amphetamine skinny and breathing high-octane annunciation. He returned to us a man in control of his image and he provocatively crushed celebrity underfoot like a shitty Marlboro. Let us kiss our lovers gently in July as the lathered sunrays of August take us into contemplation and a sweet trust to a future we will always fight for. In rock n roll, soul, tenderness and piety.
