Yo La Tengo – posing for their Press Pop photo shoot
Given that James, Georgia and Ira have been on tour for pretty much the entire year since Fade was released back in January, you’d think we might have let up on twisting their arm for promotional opportunities, but with the promise of a good meal after, we persuaded them to record a BBC 6music session for Marc Riley last night. Playing Ohm around the 46 minute mark, they followed with some chat and two more songs, with renditions of Paddle Forward and I’ll Be Around from the 1:16 mark – listen to all of those here.
Gideon Coe’s 6music show followed where the band had pre-recorded Is The Point Of It, also online now. Currently on their way back to the US, their final shows of the year take place at The Bell House and are all sold-out.
Wrapping up a recent run of instudio sessions across the country, tonight at 11:00PM EST/10:00PM CST St. Paul’s The Current will be airing their visit from DARKSIDE. Hear Nico and Dave tonight on The Current’s New Hot show. Twin Cities locals can listen in at 89.3FM, while the rest of us have to be content with tuning in online at thecurrent.org.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: the session is now archived on The Current’s site and can be listened to by clicking here.
Last Friday’s DARKSIDE session for KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic went so well that we thought hey, why not do that again, but further north? And so it is that Nicolas and Dave will be going on the air live at Seattle’s KEXP in just under half an hour (2pm EST/11am PST, to be exact). Listen online at KEXP.org, or in Seattle at 90.3FM.
Today on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, for the first time ever, the duo of Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington (pka (DARKSIDE) will be performing live on US radio. I’m sitting in the control room right now as they run through songs from their debut full-length, Psychic, and trust me, you don’t want to miss this. In Los Angeles, the spot on your radio dial is 89.9FM, and you can also listen online worldwide at KCRW.org. They go on at 2:15PM EST/11:15AM PST, so you have plenty of time to mentally prepare yourself.

How does a fellow follow being named one of GQ Magazine’s Men Of The Year? I don’t know how Daniel Craig, Tom Brady or Justin Timberlake might answer that question, but if you’re KURT VILE the answer is so blatantly obvious I can’t believe you didn’t see it coming from the goddamn headline above. Next Tuesday night, November 19 at 9pm eastern, Kurt will be be a guest on WFMU‘s “The Best Show On WFMU“, as host Tom Scharpling enters his final month of
toiling for free weekly programs for the station. It’s hardly Kurt’s first appearance on “The Best Show”, but given the respective trajectories of their careers —- Kurt entering an orbit only occupied by the entertainment world’s biggest stars, Tom preparing for a transition his handlers say might make him “the next Pat O’Brien” — this could be the final time these two icons are in the same room.
Or maybe they do something similar in a few months. Either way, you won’t want to miss it.
Whilst in London last week, Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington headed to BBC’s renowned Maida Vale studies for a Radio 1 session that spawned the above video for ‘Freak, Go Home’ from their debut LP ‘Psychic‘. The full session will live online here for a week via BBC’s iPlayer service.

On the heels of last week’s album premiere, and on the eve of tomorrow’s album release, Lee Ranaldo And The Dust will be performing a selection of tunes from their new album Last Night On Earth today for WNYC’s Soundcheck. The set streams live at Soundcheck.org and WNYC.org starting at 2pm EDT. Those of you who prefer your radio sessions on the actual radio, stay tuned (no pun intended) to the Matablog for broadcast details.
While in Chicago a couple of weeks ago for Lollapalooza, Queens of The Stone Age‘s Josh Homme sat down with “Sound Opinions’ Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis for a wide ranging chat ; we’re not sure how so many other major media outlets spaced on the Medieval Times story, but their loss is your gain. You can hear the full interview here, or if you prefer, tonight at 8pm central on WBEZ (or via any of the affiliate stations carrying the program).
