John Peel – remembered

By Stuart on Saturday, October 25th, 2014

Today marks 10 years since the passing of John Peel, a man who opened the BBC radio airwaves for bands and artists outside the remit of the stations “regular” programming and opened the minds of thousands listening at home to sounds they otherwise may have never heard. One of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, throughout his 5-decade spanning career he never showed no signs of slowing down and his influence on (the good part) of modern music is immeasurable.

As a small tribute to the many Matador bands who recorded a Peel Session over the years, we’ve compiled a selection of some of the session that made it on to YouTube, (many – including The Fall, Wisdom Of Harry and Pretty Girls Make Graves – haven’t) and there’s a full archive of all the Peel sessions over at the BBC Website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/sessions/.

Featuring: Cat Power, Interpol, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Belle and Sebastian, Sonic Youth, Mogwai, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Solex, Unsane, Arab Strab, Unwound, Guided By Voices, Superchunk, Techno Animal and Boards Of Canada.

Enjoy.

A Date With Bob In London

By Judge on Friday, December 10th, 2010

Bob Nastanovich photographed by Fiona, used without permission (sorry!)

Aside from his usual role being an all-round nice guy and multi-talented musician with Pavement, many do not know that Mr. Nastanovich is also an accomplished DJ and musical connoisseur.  He will be putting this knowledge and his adept mixing techniques to the test this weekend in London.  DJing alongside Jon McArthur, Bob will be playing some records from 8-11pm this Sunday, December 12th, at one of Matador UK’s favourite drinking establishments, The Mucky Pup, in Islington.  Described on their myspace page as “The Best Pub On Queen’s Head Street” (it’s the only pub on Queen’s Head Street), I can attest to the fact that The Pup is fully qualified at housing people who like good music, good people and good ale.

You Can Be Pavement…just for one day.

By Nils on Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Ever wanted to go to a TV taping?  One where Pavement is playing?  Stick around to try and meet the band?  Go backstage?  Watch soundcheck?  Eat their food?  Talk fantasy sports with Malkmus?

Ever wanted to, you know, get your lazy ass off the couch and JOIN PAVEMENT?  Then do it, goofball.  Imagine the Twitter potential!

Pavement are performing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on September 23 – and YOU can play guitar with them on stage!  Just submit a video of you playing a Pavement song on guitar (apologies to bass players and drummers everywhere), the band will whittle it down, and then, as with all good things, the public decides.  Details here:

http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/pavement

Kudos to Fallon and Pavement for rolling with this crazy scheme!

“The Lost Weekend” – Matador 21 In Las Vegas, Tickets On Sale This Friday, July 9

By Gerard on Monday, July 5th, 2010

Tickets for “The Lost Weekend” aka Matador’s 21st birthday celebrations at The Palms will go on sale this Friday morning at 9am, PST. Here’s the details you’ve been hassling all of us about over the last week (and don’t think we don’t appreciate it)

a) Tickets/Pricing : An initial quantity will be on sale Friday for $SOLD. .After the $SOLD tickets sell out, the price increases to $SOLD.  A Ticketfly.com link will be posted on this site on Thursday, July 8th.  Starting Friday, you’ll have the opportunity to reserve standard rooms at the Palms for the discounted rate of $SOLD per night (the full 3 nights of the festival, only). The rooms feature two double bed and occupancy of up to 4 persons is allowed. The above rate is only available when purchasing tickets thru us. If you are interested in upgrading to a larger room or a suite you will be able to do so after purchasing the standard room. TICKETS FOR THE 3 NIGHTS  + ROOMS are being sold jointly — we’re not selling tickets to the shows separately at this time, nor are we selling tickets for individual nights.

(ADDENDUM -i) A limited number of 3-day tickets priced at  $SOLD—with no Palms reservation required — will be available Friday morning at 9am PST  via Ticketfly.com

ii)  if, for example, you’re buying 4 tickets to the shows, the $SOLD per night hotel fee can cover up to 4 people.  $SOLD over 3 nights divided by 4 is hopefully not an crazy amount to charge for rooms in a world class resort).

B) VIP tickets. A limited number of VIP packages will be available at $SOLD — details about what you’ll get for the $SOLD are forthcoming. You’ll have the ability to upgrade from the regular tickets, assuming the VIP tickets aren’t sold out.

C) Venue. The room in question is the 2100 seat Pearl at the Palms.

D) MORE BANDS. OK, we’re working on it. But in addition to the 19 artists confirmed on the above poster, we can confirm the original lineup of COME — Thalia Zedek, Chris Brokaw, Sean O’Brien and Arthur Johnson — will be participating. Actually, we already know who some of the other bands are, we’re just trying to drag this out.    MORE MATABLOG CONTENT between now and October!

E) Set times -  we’ll post these the week before the event.

F) These shows are open to all ages.  However, access to the casino floor is limited to those 21 and over.

F) WHAT ABOUT LAS VEGAS HUMANS?  Las Vegas’ Zia Records is selling 50 tickets to “The Lost Weekend” starting Friday, July 9.  You’ll need a Nevada I.D.  Reservations at the Palms are not required to purchase these tickets.

(ADDENDUM II :

INFORMATION FOR TICKETS AVAILABLE IN LAS VEGAS

Zia Records

4225 South Eastern Avenue

Las Vegas, NV 89119-5485

702-735-4942

Zia Records

Tickets will go onsale at both stores at 10:00am on Friday, July 9th via lottery. By overwhelming demand by Nevada Residents we will be increasing the amount of tickets available (50 X 2 = 100) . There is a two ticket limit. Nevada state ID required for purchase. Any questions please email 21@matadorecords.com

Matador 21 In Las Vegas, Oct. 1-3 : Let The Crazy Speculation Begin

By Gerard on Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

As mentioned previously in this space, Matador will be celebrating the label’s 21st anniversary this October and this much we can finally confirm : there will be 3 nights of shows starting Friday October 1, and concluding Sunday October 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort In Las Vegas, NV. We’ll be dropping further hints about the amazing lineup in the days ahead, but a final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at the trusty Matablog on July 5. Are you as psyched as we are?  (hopefully yes, because we’re getting in for free).

(ADDENDUM – there’s been a bit of confusion so just to clear things up, tickets DO NOT GO ON SALE JULY 5.  We’ll merely be announcing the on sale date/time on July 5.  thanks – GC)

June 24 In Stockton, CA : The Return Of Gary Young

By Gerard on Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The rock world has seen all sorts of momentous reunions no one would’ve predicted recently.  Sammy Hager and Michael Anthony.  DRI.   The Faces with original vocalist Mick Hucknall and bassist Glen Matlock (hey, look it up!). But I feel very safe in saying none of the above pack the punch of the following newsflash  :   Original Pavement drummer Gary Young (above) will be behind the kit, accompanying SM, Spiral, Mark Ibold, Steve West and Bob Nastanovich on Thursday, June 24 at Stockton, CA”s Bob Hope Theatre. You know, the same Stockton concert somebody who may or may not edit this blog used as a cheap excuse to pick on a hardworking reporter who was just trying to do his job. Tickets are still available, but they won’t be forever.  You might wanna think about flying in.

Doing Fine In The 209 : Pavement Prove Local Pundit Wrong, Hometown Show Scheduled For June 24

By Gerard on Monday, May 10th, 2010

(Stockton vets The Authorities react to news that all their friends think they’re getting in free to see them play with Pavement on 6/24)

Days after baseball etiquette expert Dallas Braden warned Alex Rodriguez, “we don’t do much talking in the 209″, the former Stockton, CA Little Leaguer made history Sunday by becoming just the 19th pitcher to throw a perfect game.

Amazingly, this was the 2nd biggest Stockton-related story to hit the newswires yesterday, as Pavement have confirmed they’ll be playing the venerable Bob Hope Theatre on June 24.  Said announcement is a blatant nose-thumbing to San Joanquin.com’s Ian Hill, who’d previously promised his readers, “the most influential indie band to emerge from Stockton, won’t be stopping here on its reunion tour.” Hill, apparently the Cindy Adams of the Central Valley, admits his error in a subsequent post, but attempts to focus on whether or not the June 24 show is likely to turn a profit (“we’ll probably never know how Another Planet and Pavement set up the June 24 concert. The financial details of the show most likely never will be disclosed, as information about performance fees is typically kept secret in the concert industry.”)

Indeed, it’s a highly secretive business, and perhaps someday another savvy journalist (Albert Goldman? Fredric Dannen? Rob Jovanovic?) will get to the bottom of how Pavement could manage to play a 2000 capacity venue and still cover their vast production costs (pyro, lasers, mothership, etc.)

Thoroughbred Racing’s (Temporary) Loss Is The Rock World’s Gain

By Gerard on Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

We don’t make a habit of linking to each piece of media coverage our bands receive because much of it is press-release-regurgitation-city. Every now and then however, there’s something special that we just have to share, and when the Des Moines Register headlines an article, “Prairie Meadows race worker goes back to his life as rock star”, it’s a sure bet (sorry) we’re talking about an all-too rare profile of Pavement’s Bob Nastanovich.

back from the gold soundz

By Spiral Stairs on Sunday, April 25th, 2010

first show in auckland

hello to all…

if you haven’t heard, pavement are back from the dead. we’ve been having a blast so far on the reunion tour. thanks so much for coming to see us! we started back in february in new zealand and australia. we played the cities of auckland, sydney, meredith, adelaide, perth, brissy, and melbs . thank you so much, all of us enjoyed your hospitality, generosity, and love. and being my future hemisphere, you did us proud! the great 3D’s opened for us in auckland and it was like stepping back in time. hearing ‘outer space’ again was a special thing. what a sound! and the melbourne legends, gersey opened for us in australia . they were just as good as they were back in the day, actually much better!

backstage in sydney

this guy came up and sang on conduit...

this is a pavlova! my favourite desert in the world...

after the tour ended, the fun was just to begin since i was married in melbourne on march 20. so many of our family and friends stuck around and it was a very special day. if any of you have a chance, get married in melbourne, you’ll never forget it! we honeymooned in thailand for a week, and had some crazy food!

kravit seafood raft restuarant phuket, thailand

the tour resumed in tokyo with sm barely making the first show. he had problems with his visa and made it to the club 20 minutes before the show. i gotta say, after a 10 hour flight, he impressed us all. tokyo was crazy! the fans were amazing! all of us had a few days to see tokyo and had an awesome time. thanks to our friends there for showing us the sights. we then took the shinkansen to osaka. what an experience that was. speeding along at 200 mph is not very good on a weak stomach like mine. the crowd in osaka was very special as well. thanks so much for coming to see us! the next night in nagoya we played one of the smallest shows on the tour at club quattro , where pavement played long ago. 400 people rocked out and had a great time. all of the band and crew had a great time here! we ate too much fried chicken wings though! can’t wait to come back for summersonic in august!

tokyo light show...

tokyo rock city...

shinkansen...

la nast at hanshin tigers baseball...

7th inning stretch at hanshin tigers game...

6 pm set time in osaka...

chicken wings in nagoya!

nagoya club quattro... smallest show on the tour...

after leaving japan, we arrived in la and chilled out for a couple days before our first US show in over 10 years. and we played it in of all places, the beautiful city of pomona! my grandparents live in corona, not far from pomona so i am very familiar with the place. a lot has changed that’s for sure. they still have in and out burger though which was a nice change after so much japanese food. the show was really fun, as we ran thorough 30 songs and two hours of pavement hits. the crowd reaction was much different than japan so it kind of confused us for awhile but after we hit our stride, we knew people were having fun.

pomona hipsters!

a few days later, coachella. yes, that coachella… home of pavement’s worst show ever! those days are in the past folks. the band was pretty nervous leading up to this but ended up playing what we thought was a pretty great show. we were up on the big big stage, but we seemed like a band playing in small club. hope all who saw it enjoyed! we know we did! see you at the hollywood bowl with sonic youth and no age in sept.

the big time...

speaking of september, we have announced some new shows in north america. seattle, portland, and vancouver! seems so far away!

we’re getting ready for our european shows now. and we’re looking forward to getting back to london, the site of pavement’s last ever show. hopefully no handcuffs this time! and can’t wait for the atp festival where we picked all 40 bands. seeing the clean again will be one of my highlights! but i can’t forget broken social scene and the authorities! so many great bands!

i also want to mention that i’m playing a spiral stairs show in london on may 12th after the pavement brixton show. it’s at the windmill pub in brixton, just down the street from the academy! we play at 12:30 am and it’s cheap to get in! see you there!

ok, that’s it for now. i’ll try to keep all of you updated as the tour progresses, but there’s also spiralstairsmusic.com for setlists and news as well as crookedrain.com for all other info.

also check out steve west’s tour blog and our monitor guru jeremy lemos chicago reader blog.

thanks,

Pavement, Pomona CA Show On Sale (And Selling Fast)

By Gerard on Monday, March 29th, 2010
YouTube Preview Image

(“Silence Kit”, Perth, Australia, March 12, 2010)

I’m sure there’s a great explanation for how we neglected to mention this earlier — perhaps the controversy over the “Marmaduke” trailer left me incapable of fulfilling normal business duties (trust me, that’s not the worst excuse I’ve used) — but Pavement are playing Pomona, CA’s lovely Fox Theatre on Saturday, April 15.  Tickets are available here.

Also, if you’re the sort of person who feels the need to comment with something along the lines of “why aren’t Pavement playing _____?” rest assured, more dates are being confirmed and NO AMOUNT OF BEGGING & PLEADING WILL COMPEL THE BAND TO VISIT YOUR TWO-BIT “CITY” and we’ll reveal ‘em when we’re asked to do so.
