Coming March 16 : Yo La Tengo’s ‘There’s A Riot Going On’ (4 New Songs Premiering Today)

(photo : GODLIS)

Yo La Tengo’s new album ‘There’s a Riot Going On’ will be released on March 16th on Matador Records and can be pre-ordered HERE. ‘There’s A Riot Going On’ is a  warm, ambitious record, a striking self-produced creation from one of the most celebrated and adventurous bands in rock history, whose dynamic range touches on pure noise and serene beauty and everything in between.

To showcase the full depth of this fearless fifteen-track album, Yo La Tengo have released four new songs today (“You Are Here,” “Shades of Blue,” “She May, She Might,” and “Out of the Pool”), which can be heard HERE.

Following their sold-out eight night run of Hanukkah shows in NYC this past December, Yo La Tengo commence their world tour on March 28th in Minneapolis, hitting major Midwest, East Coast, and West Coast markets. The full list of tour dates can be found below Luc Santé’s bio.

There’s a riot going on. You don’t need me, or Yo La Tengo, to tell you that. These are dark times, in our heads as much as in the streets. It’s easy to lose contact with the ground, flying through endless banks of storm clouds day after day. Confusion and anxiety intrude into daily life and cause you to lose your compass. There are times that call for anthems, something to lift you out of your slump and put fire in your feet. And then there are times when what is indicated is a balm, a sound that will wrap around you and work out the knots in your neck.

While there’s a riot going on, Yo La Tengo will remind you what it’s like to dream. The sound burbles and washes and flows and billows. If records were dedicated to the cardinal elements, this one would be water. There are shimmery hazes, spectral rumbles, a flash of backward masking, ghostly flamingos calling “shoo-bop shoo-bop.” You are there. And even if your mind is not unclouded–shaken, misdirected, out of words and out of time–you can still float, ride the waves of an ocean deeper than your worries, above the sound and above the Sound.

For Yo La Tengo this is a slow-motion action painting, and Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew did it all themselves, in their rehearsal studio, with no outside engineer (John McEntire later did the mix). They did not rehearse or jam together beforehand; they turned on the recorder and let things coalesce. Songs came together over long stretches, sometimes as much as a year going by between parts. You’d never guess this, since the layers are finessed with such a liquid brush. You’d imagine most of the songs had sprung forth whole, since they will enter your head that way. Within two listens you will be powerless to resist the magnetic draw of “Shades of Blue,” will involuntarily hear “She May, She Might” on your internal jukebox first thing in the morning and “Let’s Do It Wrong” late at night. While there’s a riot going on you will feel capable of bobbing through like a cork.

In 1971, when the nation appeared to be on the brink of violently coming apart, Sly and the Family Stone released There’s a Riot Goin’ On, an album of dark, brooding energy. Now, under similar circumstances, Yo La Tengo have issued a record with the same name but with a different force, an album that proposes an alternative to anger and despair. Their first proper full-length since 2013’s Fade, There’s a Riot Going On is an expression of freedom and sanity and emotional expansion, a declaration of common humanity as liberating as it is soft-spoken.

-Luc Sante, December 2017

Coming February 16 : Car Seat Headrest – ‘Twin Fantasy’ ; “Nervous Young Inhumans” Video Premiere

(photo credit : Dos Rios Films)

Car Seat Headrest fans, new and old alike, will be elated to learn that Will Toledo’s 2011’s Bandcamp masterpiece, ‘Twin Fantasy’, has been re-recorded and re-imagined for release on February 16th (*pre-order breakdown below). With a seven-piece band in tow (including members of Naked Giants), Car Seat Headrest will bring its explosive and live show to Australia, Europe, and select West Coast cities through the first half of 2018, with a full US tour to be announced at a later date.

Today’s album announcement comes with the release of “Nervous Young Inhumans” and its accompanying video, which can be seen above. It is a frenetic, anthemic, split-screen choreographed crescendo, and the result of Toledo’s visionary work as a first-time director.

Toledo always knew he would return to ‘Twin Fantasy’. He never did complete the work. Not really. Never could square his grand ambitions against his mechanical limitations. Listen to his first attempt, recorded at nineteen on a cheap laptop, and you’ll hear what Brian Eno fondly calls “the sound of failure” – thrilling, extraordinary, and singularly compelling failure. Will’s first love, rendered in the vivid teenage viscera of stolen gin, bruised shins, and weird sex, was an event too momentous for the medium assigned to record it.

Even so, even awkward and amateurish, ‘Twin Fantasy’ is deeply, truly adored. Legions of reverent listeners carve rituals out of it: sobbing over “Famous Prophets,” making out to “Cute Thing,” dancing their asses off as “Bodys” climbs higher, higher. The distortion hardly matters. You can hear him just fine. You can hear everything. And you can feel everything: his hope, his despair, his wild overjoy. He’s trusting you – plural you, thousands of you – with the things he can’t say out loud. “I pretended I was drunk when I came out to my friends,” he sings – and then, caught between truths, backtracks: “I never came out to my friends. We were all on Skype, and I laughed and changed the subject.”

You might be imagining an extended diary entry, an angsty transmission from a bygone LiveJournal set to power chords and cranked to eleven. You would be wrong. ‘Twin Fantasy’is not a monologue. ‘Twin Fantasy’ is a conversation. “You know,” he sings, “that I’m mostly singing about you.” This is Will’s greatest strength as a songwriter ; he spins his own story, but he’s always telling yours, too. Between nods to local details – Harper’s Ferry, The Yellow Wallpaper, the Monopoly board collecting dust in his back seat – he leaves room for the fragile stuff of your own life, your own loves. From the very beginning, alone in his bedroom, in his last weeks of high school, he knew he was writing anthems. Someday, he hoped, you and I might sing these words back to him.

“It was never a finished work,” Toledo says, “and it wasn’t until last year that I figured out how to finish it.”
He has, now, the benefit of a bigger budget, a full band in fine form, and endless time to tinker. According to him, it took eight months of mixing just to get the drums right. But this is no shallow second take, sanitized in studio and scrubbed of feeling. This is the album he always wanted to make. It sounds the way he always wanted it to sound.

It’s been hard, stepping into the shoes of his teenage self, walking back to painful places. There are lyrics he wouldn’t write again, an especially sad song he regards as an albatross. But even as he carries the weight of that younger, wounded Toledo, he moves forward. He grows. He revises, gently, the songs we love so much. In the album’s final moments, in those “apologies to future me’s and you’s,” there is more forgiveness than fury.

This, Toledo says, is the most vital difference between the old and the new: he no longer sees his own story as a tragedy.

Belle and Sebastian – “The Same Star”, from ‘How To Solve Our Human Problems’ EP2

Belle and Sebastian kick off 2018 with shimmering new single “The Same Star.” Taken from Part 2 of the band’s new trilogy of EPs, ‘How To Solve Our Human Problems, the Sarah Martin penned, Leo Abrahams produced song brings together breezy guitars, feel-good rhythm and Martin’s bittersweet vocals for another showcase of the infectious, inquisitive and timeless pop on the band’s latest work.

The band concluded 2017 in festive fashion, with UK radio sessions for Lauren Laverne on 6 Music (listen HERE), Jo Whiley on Radio 2 (listen from 1:11:50 here), and BBC Radio Scotland’s The Quay Sessions, where they performed a special cover of The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping.”

Belle and Sebastian will embark on UK and European tour dates through February and March and all upcoming dates can be found below.

Recalling their 1997 release of three consecutive EPs, ‘How To Solve Our Human Problems’, has the classic blend of joy and melancholy and idiosyncratic spirit that has always characterised Belle and Sebastian. A double album’s worth of music – richly melodic, deliciously literate, as gentle as a summer stream but as insistent as a river – How To Solve Our Human Problems is both an era of its own, and part of a long, rich history.

The 3×12″ ‘How To Solve Our Human Problem’ boxset is available with two different purchase options ; you can buy the set as a subscription which will ship an EP to your door each month, starting with the first EP today, the second EP on January 19th and the third EP and box + poster on Febraury 16th.)

OR you can buy the 3×12″ boxset as a complete set, which will ship to arrive on February 16th, 2018.
Alternatively, you may purchase a CD compilation of the 3 EPs, which will also ship to arrive on February 16th, 2018.

The 3 EPs are also available individually, without the boxset and poster, on each of the dates listed above. You can buy EP 1 HERE, EP 2 HERE and EP 3 HERE.

Lucy Dacus – ‘Historian’, Coming March 2, “Night Shift” Premiere

On March 2, Matador is releasing the hotly anticipated 2nd album from Richmond, VA’s Lucy Dacus, ‘Historian’, the followup to her unanimously hailed 2016 debut, ‘No Burden’ that established her as one of modern music’s top new voices & songwriters.   The album’s first single, “Night Shift”, can be heard above.

‘Historian’ is a remarkably assured 10-track statement of intent that finds Dacus unafraid to take on the big questions — the life-or-death reckonings, and the ones that just feel that way. It’s a record full of bracing realizations, tearful declarations and moments of hard-won peace, expressed in lyrics that feel destined for countless yearbook quotes and first tattoos.

Dacus and her band recorded the album in Nashville last March, re-teaming with ‘No Burden’ producer Collin Pastore, and mixed it a few months later with John Congleton. The sound they created, with substantial input from multi-instrumentalist and live guitarist Jacob Blizard, is far richer and fuller than the debut — an outward flowering of dynamic, living, breathing rock and roll. Dacus’ remarkable sense of melody and composition are the driving force throughout, giving ‘Historian’ the immersive feel of an album made by an artist in full command of her powers, on a new level of truth-telling and melodic grace.

The past year, with its electoral disasters and other assorted heartbreaks, has been a rough one for many of us, Dacus included. She found solace in crafting a thoughtful narrative arc for Historian, writing a concept album about cautious optimism in the face of adversity, with thematic links between songs that reveal themselves on repeat listens — touching on everything from systemic racism to creative burnout to the death of her grandmother. “It starts out dark and ends hopeful, but it gets darker in between; it goes to the deepest, darkest, place and then breaks,” she explains. “What I’m trying to say throughout the album is that hope survives, even in the face of the worst stuff.”

Global touring in support of ‘Historian’ kicks off  on release date at Brooklyn’s Music Hall Of Williamsburg.  The album is available for preorder now on the format of your choice.

Belle and Sebastian – ‘How To Solve Our Human Problems’ EP’s & Box Set, “I’ll Be Your Pilot” premiere

Harkening back to their 1997 release of three consecutive EPs (‘Dog On Wheels’, ‘Lazy Line Painter Jane’, and ‘3.. 6.. 9 Seconds Of Light’), Belle and Sebastian will release three new EPs under the umbrella title ‘How To Solve Our Human Problems’, with the first EP coming out on December 8th, the second on January 19th, and the third on February 16th  (vinyl and digital only).  The EP trilogy will culminate with a compilation CD and a limited vinyl box set containing all three EPs, with the option of a box just for EP3 for those who have already purchased 1 and 2.

Belle and Sebastian has revealed a new song titled “I’ll Be Your Pilot”, which can be found on EP2.  The single takes as its subject Stuart Murdoch’s young son: “Having your first kid is a huge event, so I wrapped a lot of things I felt about Denny into the song. Being a dad made me feel a little like the pilot in The Little Prince, hence all the references to the Sahara!”

Just as those three early EPs are a crucial part of the Belle and Sebastian canon, these three new releases aren’t merely a detour between albums, but as definitive releases in their own right. ‘How To Solve Our Human Problems’ is both an era of its own, and part of a long, rich history. ‘How To Solve Our Human Problems’ is, if you like, Belle and Sebastian Redux.

When Belle and Sebastian felt new music percolating, they decided to break from the working methods of the recent years and instead stay at home, record the tracks as and when, often producing themselves, working with friends and collaborators to see what emerged. Working in Glasgow gave them the freedom to work without the constraints that making an album can impose: they could take their time honing and experimenting.

One thing that has defined Belle and Sebastian has been their relationship with fans, and that’s apparent in the new EPs. For the three sleeves, the group issued a call to fans to come to be photographed by Murdoch at a studio in Belsize Park in North London. Fifty were selected, and all those photographed were also recorded answering the question: “How do you solve your human problems?”

The 3×12″ boxset is available with two different purchase options. You can buy the set as a subscription which will ship an EP to your door each month, starting with the first EP on December 8th, the second EP on January 19th and the third EP and box + poster on Febraury 16th.

Coming October 13 – Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile ‘Lotta Sea Lice’ ; Video for “Over Everything” Out Now

After some talk, tease and even a tour announcement – we are pleased to share with you ALL the details for Lotta Sea Lice, an album and collaboration between Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett. It will be released on Matador on October 13th (Marathon in Europe, Milk! in Australia & New Zealand). Zane Lowe premiered the first single “Over Everything” his Beats 1 Apple Music Radio show this morning. If you missed it, no worries, listen to the song wherever you stream music and/or watch the video (directed by Danny Cohen) for the song further down.

Tracklisting
1. Over Everything
2. Let It Go
3. Fear Is Like A Forest
4. Outta The Woodwork
5. Continental Breakfast
6. On Script
7. Blue Cheese
8. Peepin’ Tom
9. Untogether

Here’s a bit more about the album…
Lotta Sea Lice is a conversation between friends, documented in raw, unvarnished song, brimming with personal history, crackling with energy and shot through with humor. What started as a loose plan to record a couple songs with no plans for release, turned into this full-length-“because the vibee was so strong,” says Kurt. There’s an unforced ease to the record, helped by the fact that the pair have been not just friends, but hardcore fans of each other’s work for years. They also roped in colleagues such as Mick Turner and Jim White of the Dirty Three, Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint, and Aussie icon Mick Harvey.

The shared chemistry is immediately apparent in the album opener and first single “Over Everything”, with dovetailing vocal lines and intricate, shimmering guitar. The lyrics play out as a rambling dialogue as they compare notes about songwriting and inspiration; it was the first song written for this project. The video was directed by Danny Cohen, who shot each on their home turf.

The pair also tackle each other’s tracks on the album, with Vile delivering a delicious, souped-up version of “Outta the Woodwork” backed by Barnett herself, and Barnett taking on Vile’s “Peepin’ Tomboy” completely solo, to spine-tingling result. The overall effect of Lotta Sea Lice is of Barnett and Vile throwing open the doors to their house to listeners – it’s their party, but everyone is invited.

Coming October 27 : Julien Baker – ‘Turn Out The Lights’ ; Stream Or Download “Appointments” Today

(photo : Nolan Knight)

Julien Baker will release her highly anticipated second album,’Turn Out The Lights’ on October 27th, 2017. An early preview can now be heard in the first single “Appointments”, a viscerally moving track that culminates in a swell of Baker’s voice, guitar, and piano. ‘Turn Out The Lights’ will arrive nearly two years to the day after her debut LP, ‘Sprained Ankle’ (originally released by 6131) and is now available for pre-order HERE.

Recorded at the legendary Ardent Studios in Baker’s hometown of Memphis, TN, ‘Turn Out The Lights’ expands upon the sound and vision of Sprained Ankle while retaining the haunting, confessional songwriting style for which she has become known. Throughout the album, she reflects on experiences of her own and those closest to her, exploring the internal conflicts that wrestle inside us all: how we deal and cope with our struggles, and how it all impacts both ourselves and our relationships of all kinds. The result is a deeply empathetic album that embraces the grays and complex truths of humanity and mental health. Turn Out The Lights was written and produced by Baker, and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Arcade Fire, Florence & the Machine).

BUY OR STREAM “War Is Coming (If You Want It)”

LYRICS
Last night I dreamed that you’d murdered some kids
Gone up towards the border where the freaks live
I couldn’t tolerate it, yet somehow I did
If it had been on TV I would’ve changed the channel
And afterwards I lay awake for quite some time
And thought about opinions I’d kept
At 5 in the morning I couldn’t tolerate it
How many had died while I slept?

Now is the time to cast Darwin aside
Stop spinning lines that justify the lure of suicide
And reach out your hands
And save someone’s life
Because war is coming
If you want it

She’s keeping quiet in a season of crime
Walking away as if nothing had changed
From that awful display
People are are strange
If they keep on laughing
Nothing will change

Now is the time to cast the screenplay aside
And try to create some space between the lines
To lift up your voice
And change someone’s mind
Because war is coming
If you want it

Coming October 20 : Spoon – ‘Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga’ 2XLP Reissue

“A collection of songs that articulates that fury and despair with such authority, it deserves to become the soundtrack for whatever future documentary montage captures the mess of 2017. Queens Of The Stone Age – ‘Villains’, coming August 25, “The Way You Used To Do” Premiere, Upcoming Dates

“The title Villains isn’t a political statement. It has nothing to do with Trump or any of that shit. It’s simply 1) a word that looks fantastic and 2) a comment on the three versions of every scenario: yours, mine and what actually happened… Everyone needs someone or something to rail against—their villain—same as it ever was. You can’t control that. The only thing you can really control is when you let go.”—Joshua Homme

Hundreds of epic shows, memory lapses, unexplained injuries, one yearlong detour with Iggy Pop and multiple Grammy nominations later, Queens Of The Stone Age reemerge from the desert newly scarred and somehow strangely prettier with lucky seventh album, ‘Villains’, out August 25 on Matador Records. Now available for preorder on deluxe vinyl, standard vinyl, CD and digital, ‘Villains’ consists of the following songs:

1. Feet Don’t Fail Me
2. The Way You Used To Do
3. Domesticated Animals
4. Fortress
5. Head Like A Haunted House
6. Un-Reborn Again
7. Hideaway
8. The Evil Has Landed
9. Villains Of Circumstance

Produced by Mark Ronson and co-produced by Mark Rankin and mixed by Alan Moulder, ‘Villains’ is the first full album offering from Queens Of The Stone Age since 2013’s ‘…Like Clockwork’ gave the band its first #1 album in the U.S. (and #1s in Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, Scotland, #2s in the UK, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, Finland… but really, who’s counting?). Like the stunning artwork of returning illustrator Boneface, the sonic signatures of the lineup that took ‘…Like Clockwork’ around the world and back—Founder/guitarist/vocalist/lyricist Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar, keys), Michael Shuman (bass), Dean Fertita (keys, guitar), Jon Theodore (drums)—are as unmistakable as ever, though coexisting with sufficient new twists to induce recurring double takes. As Homme himself puts it, “The most important aspect of making this record was redefining our sound, asking and answering the question ‘what do we sound like now?’ If you can’t make a great first record, you should just stop—but if you can make a great record but you keep making records and your sound doesn’t evolve, you become a parody of that original sound.”

Of his role working within such a closed and confident ecosystem as Queens Of The Stone Age, Ronson says, “Queens are and have always been my favorite rock n roll band ever since I walked into Tower on Sunset and bought ‘Rated R’ in the summer of 2000, so it was incredibly surreal to be welcomed into their secret, pirate clan—or the ‘jacuzzi’ as Josh likes to call it. I also knew that my super fandom alone would not keep me in the jacuzzi. There were moments during the making of the album in which i was aware i was watching my musical heroes craft something that was sure to become one of my favorite moments on any Queens album. And to have some part in that felt like being in a dream–a very heavy, dark, wonderful dream.”

Longtime Queens cohort co-producer Mark Rankin added, “After the baptism of fire that was …Like Clockwork, I was excited to get into the studio again with the challenge of pushing the sound for this record, especially with the the addition of Ronson into the creative mix. We wanted to evolve the production to be processed in a modern way yet be totally organic and still performed fully live, like lifting a veil and what you thought was electronic is actually live and things are not as they first appear… What we’ve made is forward looking yet unmistakably Queens.”

Queens Of The Stone Age have also confirmed a slew of North American dates filling in the space between and beyond their previously announced appearances at Outside Lands and Riot Fest. The new shows, which include Queens’ first ever Madison Square Garden headline, are detailed below. For further information, keep an eye on Queens Of The Stone Age sites and socials and just let go.

STREAM Algiers’ “Cleveland” (From ‘The Underside Of Power’)

“A recurring theme in our music is the idea of injustice and the bitter understanding that obtaining justice in this world is all but impossible–particularly for black and brown people. I wanted the song to sound like the Final Judgement in the Bible, wherein the wicked are judged and condemned by the righteous with all the ‘weeping and gnashing of teeth,’ of the damned when justice is finally realized. This translates in the ‘solo’ section of the song. It consists of various recordings of people inconsolably crying and weeping while the guitar and lead vocal mirror their contortions. If you’ve ever witnessed something like that in real life, sound of a person’s sorrow is equal parts frightening and musical.” – Franklin James Fisher

We’re 10 days away from the global release of Algiers’ hotly anticipated 2nd album, the Adrian Utely-produced ‘The Underside Of Power’, and with that in mind, here’s the premiere of another track from this crucial work, “Cleveland”. Algiers’ updated tour itinerary, with headlining North American dates starting July 13 following European stadium shows supporting Depeche Mode, can be found below.
