We’re very thrilled to announce the signing of Memphis, TN-based songwriter Julien Baker. The 21-year-old’s widelyacclaimed 2015 debut album, ‘Sprained Ankle’ (originally released by 6131) is available now digitally, with Matador’s LP and CD reissue available in all territories (save for North America and Australia) on March 17. We’ll be releasing Julien’s next studio album everywhere.

Funeralpack

(7″ sleeve photo by Kaitlin Gladney)

As premiered earlier this morning via NPR’s “All Songs Considered”, you can hear the previously unreleased “Funeral Pyre”, the A-side for Baker’s new 7”, out on March 17th on Matador*. Only Baker can make a song with such a darkly macabre title so heartbreakingly gorgeous, with her signature hushed-yet-lofty vocals soaring over a quietly finger-picked melody that crescendos into layered, almost-orchestral beauty. The B-side, “Distant Solar System,” is another unheard song from the ‘Sprained Ankle’ sessions.

(* – said 7″ will be included in the international editions of the ‘Sprained Ankle’ LP ; however, the single will be available for stand-alone purchase in North America).

After extensive touring in 2015 and 2016, Baker shows no signs of slowing down in 2017. Midwestern US audiences can catch her on a short run of dates this winter, which are followed by a lengthy European tour in the spring. The full list of tour dates can be found below :

Coming January 13 : CHAVEZ – ‘Cockfighters’ EP

OLE-1109 Chavez Cockfighters

“The Bully Boys”

After a two decade sabbatical, highly revered U.S. quartet CHAVEZ make their hotly rumored return to the rock frontlines with a new 3 song 12”/digital EP, ‘Cockfighters’, released by Matador on January 13 of the new year. Said EP — recorded in 2015 with longtime associate John Agnello —— represents the band’s first new recordings since their 1996 album, ‘Ride the Fader’. Will this EP result in a future full-length? Will Chavez once again exhibit the sort of live form they flashed at 2010’s Matador 21 celebrations? We don’t think you should bet money on it, but on the other hand, if you have a genuine gambling problem, judgmental scolding isn’t going to help anyone. Let’s enjoy this all-too-brief reminder of the band’s genius while we can.

TRACK LISTING:
1. The Singer Lied
2. Blank In The Blaze
3. The Bully Boys

Chavez-photo copy

It is both a blessing and a curse to be born with a penis. Freud knew this. So did Candy Darling. And so, mutatis mutandis, do the men of Chavez. They are phallus-wrestlers of the highest order, as evidenced not only by the muscular sensitivity of their music, but also quite literally by the title of their new EP, Cockfighters. Three songs in nine minutes; a new chapter and a willful engagement with the masculine issues—both hidden and overt—of our time.
To those of you who now implore, “Tell me the tale entire of Chavez,” we would caution that history is one big flaccid schlong draped across us all. Its inches are the measure of humankind’s institutionalized lies. So we don’t want to spend too much time on the past. But, for the sake of completion, we’ll blast through the pertinents real quick: Chavez was an integral part of the Matador records 1990s ejaculation of genius. With a bit more arena-rock in their DNA than most of their labelmates, Chavez took the nervous structures and ruminative lyric modes of the Indie Rock Pleistocene but added, deeper and more effectively than their peers, an injection of glistening testosterone-maximized amperage to the mix.

The band is composed of four Renaissance gents, varied and successful in their non ‘Vez pursuits.

Bassist Scott Marshall is a filmmaker who works and surfs in Malibu each and every day. He is lifelong friends with Anson Williams, which is a true fact you can research if you wish.

Drummer The James Lo, who is distinguished as a human in 2016 by the lack of a Wikipedia page that captures and classifies his essence in digital formaldehyde, is ambivalent about this rock music thing. He spends his time designing sound for contemporary dance and creating bits of hardware and software for music and theater.

Guitarist, riff-writer, and purveyor of harmony vocals Clay Tarver is a screenwriter who has worked on all four seasons of the HBO series Silicon Valley. He won a WGA Award in 2015 and subsequently, as he tells it, “nearly shit [his] pants onstage in a Men’s Warehouse rented tux.”

Guitarist, lyricist, and lead singer Matt Sweeney is a knight errant of studio and stage who has played with everyone from Iggy Pop and Neil Diamond to Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Adele, and Run The Jewels. When all us humans have finally moved on from this Earth and are grooving as one spiritual mass to the great afterlife band of eternity, we will surely find Sweeney at the lip of the stage.

For now, in the material world, we walk around in our mortal fleshbags looking for good things to listen to—which is where these new Chavez tunes come in handy. Aside from a scattered drippage of shows and some new vocals on a greatest hits set, this here is the first public utterance from Chavez since 1996. But please put away your hot branding iron that says REUNION in the WranglerⓇ font. You will not be able to use it on the exposed flesh of Chavez because, technically, the band never broke up. They just noticed that the less they did, the more people wanted them. So they became a wee bit diffuse in their approach, getting together now and then over the years to proverbially noodle in the proverbial woodshed.

So this is less a Lazarus vibe then it is, say, a flaming and glorious phoenix kind of a trip. Imagine if Charles Willeford—author of the 1962 cult pulp novel (and literary ancestor to this EP) Cockfighter—clawed himself out of the grave and said, through a gargle of dirt and his own decaying bones, “Hey, folks. I’ve been down there writing the whole time and, here you go: got a new book for y’all here.” This Chavez moment we’re witnessing right now is kind of like that. A much-needed and genuinely ripping jolt of new perspective from artists of experience and wisdom. Thanks, men.

—Jesse Pearson

Coming November 11 : Body/Head – ‘No Waves’

BodyHead2016

album art by Raymond Pettibon

Body/Head, the duo of Kim Gordon (CKM, Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, etc.) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange, etc.) will be releasing their new record, ‘No Waves’, on November 11th. The live record documents a single show (Big Ears Festival in 2014 in Knoxville, TN) from a band renowned for clearing pathways of possibility using great waves of amplification and voice.

Body/Head’s debut release for Matador Records, ‘Coming Apart’, was arguably the heaviest record of 2013 and received with open arms and blown minds across the world. The fact that a record steeped so heavily in non-traditional structures and improvisation could touch so many people was not a surprise to anyone who had seen Body/Head in a live setting. No Waves captures that raw improvisation and harnesses the power into a listening experience of pure, unmediated intensity.

The fire of improvisation is not the fire of the elements. Body/Head deal in electricity, but they exist in the fire of improvisation. As such, they need to play live to sustain themselves. Call it the ontological necessity of a band working heavily with the flow of power (power flowing back and forth between the members of the band, flowing through band and audience, flowing through the mental and material planes, etc). ‘No Waves’, a document of this flow of power, offers a different side of the band they revealed on ‘Coming Apart’. Yes, some of the songs cross over in undefinable ways, but the live foundation of No Waves brings all new energies to the fore. Everything reveals itself in the now.

One of the pleasures of a live record is a chance for the listener to feel the music develop and unfold from a previously known departure point. This experience is magnified with Body/Head due to the improvisatory basis of the band, which encourages new sounds and modes of communication with every show. We hear new vocal melodies developing, new attacks on strings, new clusters of intervals. It is the sound of sound evolving. Listening to No Waves, one can’t help feel that despite the title of their previous record, ‘Coming Apart’, we’re actually hearing Kim and Bill become one. Guitars and vocals flow into each as if played by a single creature. The sound of their evolution causes audiomorphic sensations. Two guitars or eight? Four hands or one? One voice or two?

The live record also plays with orientation via it’s concentration on communication. Which way are you listening to it? Listen once and hear certain forms. Listen to the same part again and you may perceive new forms, like overhearing a game of telephone. With ‘No Waves’, Body/Head adds a document to the library of classic live records that never exhaust themselves no matter how many times they are listened to. Musicians and groups such as Albert Ayler, High Rise, Van Morrison, Rudolph Grey, Bill Evens, Swans, etc. knew the unique possibilities of a live record that invites participation from the listener. It’s the beauty of a path cleared at the moment it was recorded and for every moment to come. It’s Body/Head doing what they do best – making the listener smile as they participate with the band in joyous, creative time. The Élan vital never rocked so hard.
– Ben Chasny

Kim Gordon – “Murdered Out”

unnamed-2
unnamed-1-2

“Murdered Out”

Earlier this morning, NPR Music premiered “Murdered Out”, the first single by Kim Gordon issued under her own name, recorded with producer Justin Raisen and Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa. The following are Kim’s words on the subject :

Black matte spray.

When I moved back to LA I noticed more and more cars painted with black matte spray, tinted windows, blackened logos, and black wheels. This was something I had occasionally seen in the past, part of low-rider car culture. A reclaiming of a corporate symbol of American success, The Car, from an outsider’s point of view. A statement-making rejection of the shiny brand new look, the idea of a new start, the promise of power, and the freedom on the open road. Like an option on a voting ballot, “none of the above.”

“Murdered Out,” as a look, is now creeping into mainstream culture as a design trend. A coffee brand. A clothing line. A nail polish color.

Black-on-black matte is the ultimate expression in digging out, getting rid of, purging the soul. Like a black hole, the supreme inward look, a culture collapsing in on itself, the outsider as an unwilling participant as the “It” look.

###

I met the uber talented Justin Raisen, the producer, offhandedly. He was working on a project with another artist and kept sending me tracks to listen to with the possibility of getting me to sing on one of them. When I learned I could make up my own lyrics, I was in. With the remaining bits of unused vocals, he started what would be “Murdered Out.” Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) plays drums, based on the trashy drums that Justin first laid down. I went back and did more vocals and guitar and we mixed it…”Murdered Out” was such a great surprise! Looking forward to our next collaboration.

denialreleaseday

At the risk of being overly dramatic, our national nightmare of moderate length is finally over and the amended LP and CD versions of Car Seat Headrest’s hotly anticipated / universally hailed ‘Teens Of Denial’ are either hitting your local record shop or your mailbox today (and if it’s the latter, I certainly hope you ordered the CD, otherwise there could be some real problems cramming the LP inside). After taking Europe (or what’s left of it) by storm, Car Seat Headrest kick off the next leg of North American touring with a free show tomorrow on Pier 16 of NYC’s South Street Seaport as part of the Village Voice’s 4 Knots Festival. Also appearing are Protomartyr and fledgling young hopefuls Guided By Voices (of whom we’ve heard promising things, apparently the main fella is considered somewhat prolific, you might even say ‘Toledo-esque’) and if you get there early enough, I’ll be conducting a walking tour of the block former Matador receptionist Joe Gaer used to live on. The show is all-ages, though the walking tour not recommended for preteens or the emotionally immature.

Lucy Dacus Signs To Matador ; ‘No Burden’ Available Now (And Later)

Videography by Joseph McCormick and Henry Sho Kellam

lucydacus-dcondren-selects-30-hi copy

“An uncommonly warm indie rock record. Lead guitar lines pour in like slow columns of sunlight, and Dacus’ voice itself is a comforting blur.” – Brad Nelson, Pitchfork

“Hyper-aware missives from a friend whose mind is always whirling —-disarmingly open indie rock songs, with plainspoken lyrics that hit even harder thanks to her soft, sturdy alto.” – Maura Johnson, Rolling Stone

“Her songs roll over you like waves, the matter-of-fact, plaintive delivery serving as a vessel for examining where things all went wrong and how to make them right again.” – James Rettig, Stereogum

“A brave lyricist whose sensual expression of catharsis will stay with you long after you’ve finished with this record… an amazing breath of fresh air in an otherwise overwrought genre.” – Annalise Domenighini, Noisey

We’re very pleased to announce the signing of Richmond, VA singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus to Matador. Lucy’s debut album, the Collin Pastore produced ‘No Burden’, released earlier this year by Egg Hunt, is now available digitally via Matador and all the download and streaming services you’d expect ; a re-release of ‘No Burden’ on LP and compact disc will be in stores September 9 with preorders available starting today.

OLE-1115_Lucy_Dacus copy

Recorded in Nashville last autumn with guitarist/bandmate Jacob Blizard, ‘No Burden’ is as arresting, direct and quick-witted as any debut we’ve stumbled across ; that the 21 year-old Dacus’ poetic chops are more than matched by a killer vocal performance (and later down the line, by a ridiculously locked-in live band) has just a bit to do with why ‘No Burden’ blasted thru it’s first pressing in the blink of an eye. After a ton of US touring in 2016 including dates in support of Houndmouth, Kurt Vile and Julien Baker, Lucy hits the road again this summer and fall, including July dates opening for The Decemberists, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits appearances, a UK debut at the End Of The Road Festival and September shows in support of Car Seat Headrest (see below) :

“Ancient Jules” (directed by Claes Nordwall)

“Initially an instrumental guitarist, Gunn has really come into his own as a full-band-backed singer, more assured in his soft and leathery tenor. . . Gunn’s found a kindred guitarist in James Elkington; the two toss off a thicket of Richard Lloyd/Tom Verlaine-style interplay that turns into a rigorous workout as ‘Ancient Jules’ folds in feedback, countermelodies and a solo that burns like a cigarette hanging just off the lip.” – Lars Gotrich, NPR Music

“Steve Gunn is one of the best guitarists of his generation. Period.” – Richard Metzger, Dangerous MInds

The second video from Steve Gunn’s first album for Matador, ‘Eyes On The Lines’ (June 3) premiered earlier today at Dangerous Minds in the form of the Claes Nordwall-directed “Ancient Jules”. When a motorcycle excursion on the English countryside goes awry, Steve is rescued by another certifiable non-slouch in guitar history, the one and only Michael Chapman. Nordwall’s cameras are welcomed into Chapman’s home and aside from the obvious (ie. you don’t get this kind of service from AAA), it’s pretty awesome to watch these two fantastic players/songwriters in a casual (ALBEIT HEAVILY STAGED) setting. The ‘Ancient Jules’ digital EP is also out today and includes two non-album bonus tracks, “The Handshake” and “The Soloist.” Check it out at Spotify or Apple Music.

Steve Gunn & The Outliners – Nathan Bowles (drums), James Elkington (guitar, lap steel), and Jason Meagher (bass) — head to Europe next week to begin a two-month tour in support of Eyes On The Lines. Their debut show in North America is June 9th at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. All dates are below.

Coming June 3 : Steve Gunn – ‘Eyes On The Lines’, “Conditions Wild” video premiere

“Conditions Wild” – directed by Brandon Herman

We’re thrilled to announce the release of a new album from guitarist/songwriter Steve Gunn, ‘Eyes On The Lines’, coming June 3rd, worldwide. . Gunn’s music has always embraced expanse and movement, springing from the simple and profound relationship between humans and their environment. ‘Eyes On The Lines’, the follow-up to Gunn’s pastoral and highly acclaimed ‘Way Out Weather’, is his most explicit ode to the blissful uncertainty of adventure yet.

Accompanied by a full band — Nathan Bowles (drums, banjo, organ), Hans Chew (wurlitzer), James Elkington (guitar, lap steel, dobro), Mary Lattimore (harp), Jason Meagher (bass, guitar, flute), Paul Sukeena, Justin Tripp (bass, keyboards), John Truscinski (drums), and (electric, guitar) –– ‘Eyes On The Lines’ presents Gunn embracing his urban surroundings through a series of songs that showcase his extraordinary ability to match inventive hooks to deftly constructed melodies full of personality.

Throughout ‘Eyes On The Lines’, Gunn is more narrator than diarist as he pours real-life moments and real-life people into vibrant and evocative tales. Take debut single, “Conditions Wild,” for example. Directly inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost, Gunn rambles through strange clouds of roving — interlocking strings, percussion, and vocals join in an irrepressible rush. It’s accompanying, highly-stylized video, directed by Brandon Herman, phenomenally captures the notion of finding comfort in getting lost and embracing the unknown, an important concept to Gunn in his songwriting and playing, and the creation of ‘Eyes On The Lines’ as a whole.

Steve Gunn will be touring extensively all over Europe and North America this year. All confirmed dates are below.

Coming May 20 : Car Seat Headrest – Teens Of Denial

“Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales”

On May 20, Matador will be releasing the new Car Seat Headrest 2XLP/CD/digital album, ‘Teens Of Denial’. Though it’s the 13th album to date for Will Toledo, it’s the first CSH album to be recorded in a pro-style recording environment with a full band and acclaimed producer-person (specifically, Steve Fisk). Following the previously leaked “Vincent”, the album’s second single, “Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales” is available today. As Will explains, the song is about “post-party melancholia. Wishing to either be a better person or care less about the whole deal. Going home alone, in poor condition. The ‘killer whales’ bit is inspired by Blackfish, which is a depressing film.”

You have no right to be depressed
You haven’t tried hard enough to like it”

There are two kinds of great lyrics.  The first is the banger/anthem catch phrase: “Normal life is borin’ / but superstardom is close to post-mortem.” The second is more complex (and more rarely found): “Like a bird on a wire / Like a drunk in a midnight choir/I have tried in my way to be free” — with ideas, themes, and personae unfolding over the course of songs, contradicting each other, confronting the listeners’ preconceptions, like Pete Townshend, Morrissey, or Kendrick Lamar.

Will Toledo, the singer/songwriter/visionary of Car Seat Headrest, is adept at both, having developed them over the course of his eleven college-recorded Bandcamp albums and his retrospective collection last fall, Teens of Style.

“I’m so sick of / (Fill in the blank)” or “It’s more than you bargained for / But it’s a little less than what you paid for” are more than smart, edgy slogans.  Over the course of Teens of Denial’s 11 songs, Will narrates a journey with his mysterious companion/alter-ego Joe that addresses big themes (personal responsibility, existential despair, the nature of identity, the Bible, heaven) and small ones (Air Jordans, cops, whether to have one more beer, why he lost his backpack).

“Fill in The Blank,” the mission statement of the album, kicks things off — it’s a fist-pumping anthem about feeling lousy in an ill-defined way, the fear of settling into a routine of futility, and not wanting to deal with it.  Although it’s oddly joyful sounding, Toledo considers it the introduction to his angriest record yet. In that vein, “Vincent,” “Hippie Powers,” and “Connect The Dots” are about both fighting to hold your place in the crowd and to hold your drink, as well as DIY college house shows, and having no one to dance with, respectively.  Initially similar, “Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales” veers off in surprising directions, each piece flush with catchy, irony-free hooks.

At the heart of the album sits the 11:32 “Ballad of the Costa Concordia,” which has more musical ideas than most whole albums (and at that length, it uses them all).  Horns, keyboards, and elegant instrumental interludes set off art-garage moments; vivid vocal harmonies follow punk frenzy.  The selfish captain of the capsized cruise liner in the Mediterranean in 2013 becomes a metaphor for struggles of the individual in society, as experienced by one hungover young man on the verge of adulthood.

Teens of Denial refracts Toledo’s particular, personal story of one difficult year through cultural touchstones such as the biography of Frank Sinatra, the evolution of the Me Generation as seen in Mad Men and elsewhere, plus elements of Eastern and Western theology. The whole thing flaunts a kind of conceptual, lyrical, and musical ambition that has been missing from far too much 21st-century music.

“I won’t go down with this shit
I will put my hands up and surrender
There will be no more flags above my door
I have lost, and always will be”

There are two kinds of great lyricists.  The first kind is one you find in books, canonized by time and a lifetime of expression.  The second has it all in front of him.  Meet Will Toledo.  Or at least one version of him.   – Geoffrey Weiss

Hi,
We put together this “EP” of songs that we recorded when we were working on “Are You Alone?”, but which didn’t fit on that album for one reason or another. They aren’t more recent than the songs on AYA — they date from different periods of time, one of them is among the earliest songs written for AYA and others are more recent. Despite the fact that it’s a collection of songs that didn’t make the record, I think there is a feeling that links them all together (which is maybe why they didn’t fit on AYA). We hope you enjoy these songs!

We are going on tour in North America and then in Australia in January and February. These are the only dates we have planned right now, so if you want to see us, definitely try to come out to one of these shows. I know some of them are sold out. We tried to move the show into bigger venues where we could (and we did in Vancouver) but in some cases we couldn’t make it happen. So sorry if the show is sold out and you wanted to come.

She-Devils are going to be supporting us on all our shows in North America, which is really exciting. They are really good, so if you’re coming to the shows make sure to come early enough to see them.

It will be our first time in Australia, and it’s difficult to imagine the next time I will be back there (through music or not) so if you’re in Australia and are into our band, this is the time to see us!
Okay!

Coming March 18 : HÆLOS – ‘Full Circle’

“Oracle”

On March 18, Matador will be releasing the long-awaited debut album from London trio HÆLOS, ‘Full Circle’. Preorder details can be found below.

Every generation has their own version of the blues, music that captures a sense of melancholia and provides a sonic reflecting pool for young lovers, old souls, and the eternally heartbroken. For their darkly shaded and radiant debut album Full Circle, HAELOS have found their blues where others go to find pure, uncut joy: the dancefloor.

The London trio’s version of a night out is a million miles away from mirror balls and sweaty bodies, their rippling electronic pop conjuring the exhilarating privacy of a cavernous club’s dark pockets and the introspective comedowns that accompany rainy 5 a.m. cab rides.  “It’s the music you put on after the club,” Lotti Benardout, who shares vocal duties with her other bandmates, states. “You can still feel that energy and euphoria, but it might bring you back to reflect on certain moments or memories.”

The three bandmates decided to collaborate having been working on separate projects. Arthur Delaney and Dom Goldsmith had been working on material under the working title of HÆLOS; Lotti had been writing with Dom who was producing an EP for her at the time. The nocturnal, throbbing “Dust” was the first finished work to come from the trio’s newly formed union; over the course of the following year, the rest of Full Circle’s shadowy sounds came together. “When you don’t know people that well, you can look back at things and retell your story,” Benardout speaks on HAELOS’ ability to mature from relative strangers into a cohesive musical unit. “It’s new again. There’s something quite cathartic about it.”

Catharsis is, indeed, the name of Full Circle’s game, an embodiment of a sound that has been referred to as “dark euphoria”. Throughout the album, HÆLOS reconstruct the firmament of dance sounds past and present to construct an exquisitely elegiac mood that retains a sense of presence as it conveys the pain of emotional distance. Every moment of uneasy reflection is matched by quiet explosions—Delaney’s forceful shouts over yo-yo synths on Full Circle’s title track, Benardout’s layered pleas over Goldsmith’s cascading drum breaks on “Pray,” and the soaring “Separate Lives,” which hollows out drum’n’bass’ propulsive patter to form an atmosphere that’s as gently disruptive as it is emotionally nourishing. Throughout the album’s loudest and most peaceful moments alike, Full Circle retains a pristine intimacy thanks to Goldsmith’s keen ear for behind-the-boards magic; his touch gives the album a hermetic feel that stays with you long after it ends.

We’re living in a time where the struggle to make human connections is hampered by our inability to unplug, and so Full Circle is a glorious, gorgeous contradiction of sorts: emotional pop that perfectly captures ageless emotional conundrums, featuring music that could only be made in the present day. “We all have a shared human experience,” opines Delaney, HAELOS’ main lyrical contributor. “As much as we try to run away from feelings with all the distractions around us, they always follow us around. They’re a constant thing that unites us all.” And so Full Circle is the sound of three individuals finding common ground, for themselves and for anyone who’s ever believed that it’s impossible to move your body without listening to your own heart.

Coming Soon : the deluxe edition of Spoon’s ‘Gimme Fiction’

News flash for our friends beyond North America : Spoon’s classic ‘Gimme Fiction’ celebrates its 10th anniversary with a deluxe limited-edition version on 180g double-LP, double-CD, released on Matador in early 2016 (Merge‘s domestic version will be available on December 11, as will Matador’s digital download version). The reissue (released by Merge in 2005 and licensed/simultaneously released by Matador for territories outside of North America) contains the original album newly-remastered by Howie Weinberg from the original tapes, a second disc with 12 previously unreleased demos from the era, a digital download of nine additional bonus tracks, and a full-color book containing photos and an extensive oral history of the making of the album by The A.V. Club’s Sean O’Neal. The deluxe LP package will also include a 24″ x 36″ poster and a digital download of all songs.

‘Gimme Fiction’ dragged the sonic pointillism of Kill the Moonlight further into dub-influenced weirdness as the increasingly confident Spoon went crazy in the studio, experimenting with everything from warped hip-hop samples to horse whinnies. Whatever digging or strange alchemy had to go into it, they only produced more gold.

‘Gimme Fiction’ deserves special recognition as the album where Spoon took creative and stylistic quantum leaps that resulted in classics “I Turn My Camera On,” “The Beast And Dragon Adored,” “My Mathematical Mind,” “I Summon You” and so many more. 10 years later, ‘Gimme Fiction’ gets the deluxe vinyl release it so richly deserves.

Listen to and share the demo version of “Was It You?” and experience the oral history of ‘Gimme Fiction’ via the band’s Tumblr, which includes videos, excerpts, and images from the album’s creation and campaign.

Savages – ‘Adore Life’ Coming January 2016 ; “The Answer” Video Premiere

“The Answer” – directed by Giorgio Testi at Pulse

“We’ve observed our audience all around the world and noticed that something is happening. People want to be pushed to do good, or to be good, or just to feel good. We wanted a very intense video, that felt like banging your head against the wall, focusing on our audience: a portrait of our crowd, an homage to music lovers and the good people who are coming to gigs and shouting their lungs out, or just smiling at the back. We were touched by them every night, and wanted to get their message out there: loud guitar music is still alive and still connects people.” -Savages

Savages’ second album, ‘Adore Life’, was recorded at RAK Studios, London in April 2015. Johnny Hostile was the producer and Richard Woodcraft the engineer. Anders Trentemøller took care of the mixing in Copenhagen. ‘Adore Life’ is out January 22, 2016.

All songs were written and played by Savages – Ayşe Hassan (bass), Fay Milton (drums), Gemma Thompson (guitar), Jehnny Beth (vocals). Lyrics by Jehnny Beth.
