Algiers – “Black Eunuch”, Headlining North American Dates In June

By Gerard on Wednesday, April 15th, 2015

(photo by WFN Productions)

The latest track from Algiers’ forthcoming self-titled debut album, “Black Eunuch” debuted on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Radio One program Monday, followed by a U.S. premiere on NPR’s “All Songs Considered” yesterday. “Politically-charged gospel of the highest order; ignore it to your own detriment,” argues Stereogum’s Caitlin White, and if forced to pick sides, we’re decidedly against anything detrimental. It doesn’t matter how many times we warn you, ‘Algiers’ is still gonna be the most surprising album of 2015.

After a string of previously announced May dates supporting Interpol, Algiers are headlining a series of North American club shows, with ticket links found below.

Shlohmo “Buried” (Official Video) + Euro Tour Dates

By Rian on Thursday, February 12th, 2015

In Dean’s words:

Shlohmo has said that his forthcoming full-length album, Dark Red, is intended to be “devastating and violent” that “forces you to feel something even if that something isn’t good.” Today, he makes good on his promise with the video for new single “Buried,” depicting a surreal, complicated and bloody nightmare that takes place on the gritty, blacker than black, abandoned and desperate streets of Los Angeles, the artist’s hometown. Directed by Lance Drake, the clip casts a sinister shadow over the circle of life and death, giving a new symbolism to the album’s title, Dark Red.

Dark Red is out April 7, 2015.

STREAM : The Young’s ‘Chrome Cactus’ via Spotify/Noisey

By Gerard on Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

While at least one observer has declared The Young’s 3rd album, “HIGHWAY RECORD OF THE SUMMER” (“two guitars peel each other’s skins in empathy, acoustics are layered over top of wuzzy crunch and the groove is cinched,”), we’re pretty adamant the Austin quartet’s latest is a stone killer even if you’re at a desk, comfy chair or riding the subway. You can find out for yourself starting today, as Spotify and Noisey are streaming ‘Chrome Cactus’ in advance of the August 25 release date.

Though the band’s next batch of US touring kicks off August 29 in Los Angeles, Austin residents have the following events coming up in the next several days ;

THIS IS NOT RADIO HUT. Smiling (?) label functionaries (functionary?) will hand out the beers.

Monday, August 25 at 5pm, The Young will be performing live at Austin’s Waterloo Records, with refreshments provided by Austin Beerworks. A special edition of the ‘Chrome Cactus’ LP featuring a limited 12″ X 12″ screen print will be available at this instore.

coming June 17: Lower ‘Seek Warmer Climes’, listen to “Lost Weight, Perfect Skin” now

By Robby on Thursday, April 3rd, 2014

Following releases on 540, Escho and Blind Prophet, Lower‘s debut album ‘Seek Warmer Climes‘, will see release June 17th on Matador Records (Escho in Denmark, Big Love in Japan). The record sparkles with the harmonic dissonance and high-strung urgency of their underground rock forebears, but Copenhagen’s Lower – Adrian Toubro (vocals), Simon Formann (guitar), Kristian Emdal (bass) and Anton Rothstein (drums) – also channel the romance and drama of great singer-songwriters, from late-period Scott Walker to Bryan Ferry. The result is a hugely ambitious and affecting rock album that enters deeply personal and unusual sonic and topical spaces.

You don’t have to dig deep to hear how far Lower’s music sits from the traditional concerns of modern rock music. Toubro’s lyrics are finely wrought emotional dramas that, in their poetic construction and raw honesty of delivery. “Every song on the record deals in some way with personal development, be it emotional or cosmetic,” says Toubro. “How to act in different social contexts, and to acclimatize oneself into a given situation without losing face.”
