Important Festival News (For Those Who Mysteriously Fail To Read Other Music/News Sites)

If you’re like us (and I suspect you are), YOU LOVE MUSIC FESTIVALS almost as much as you love freedom. And there’s so many that are close to our hearts.  Matador’s Lost Weekend.  Atlamont.  The Gathering Of The Juggalos.  The Cornerstone Festival.  I could go on, but you’ve probably got some illegal downloading to back to, so let’s cut to the chase. Transmission Entertainment’s 7th annual Fun Fun Fun Festival is happening in Austin, TX this coming November 2, 3 and 4, and we’re thrilled to find out at the last minute announce Tanlines, Fucked Up, Paul Banks and The Young are all taking part.

Likewise,  ATP America’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” weekender (September 21-23) has been moved from Asbury Park, NJ to the glamorous West Side of Manhattan.  The Lee Ranaldo Band and Chavez will be playing, along with a tremendous lineup of performers, none of whom are named Louis C.K.   They’ll all have their hands full measuring up to Richie Blackmore at California Jam (above) , but there’s no harm in trying.

Lee Ranaldo Playing Instores, Reading Poetry

You’d be hard pressed to find a dude who loves independent record stores as much as Lee Ranaldo. Rumor has it Lee is calling all sorts of indie shops around the country just to say wassup.

So it should come as no surprise that in the coming weeks, Lee will be stopping in two of our favorite record stores to play some songs for the locals. First, he’ll be playing at Durham, NC mainstay Bull City on Monday May 14 (in advance of his May 15 show at the Duke Coffeehouse). The following Monday May 21 finds Lee at Bloomington, IN’s Landlocked Music for a short performance and a reading of his poem ‘Bloomington, Indiana: Autumn.’ That’s pretty fitting.

The Men join Lee Ranaldo in London

Those of you with some sort of long-term memory will hopefully remember the previously announced Lee Ranaldo dates, but now we can reveal The Men will join to support at the London show happening this June.  The Men of course have a 7″ single out on the Singles Going Home Alone series, whilst Lee is out in support of his latest album.  He recently played a stripped back set for The New Yorker, performing “Off The Wall” and “Hammer Blows” (which follow the dizzying over zealous multi-camera angle interview edit).

Lee Ranaldo

“Off The Wall” (mp3)

Lee Ranaldo Free, All Ages San Francisco Instore

The subject says it all, my friends. Lee Ranaldo will be at the legendary Amoeba San Francisco next Thursday April 12 to play a set of songs from his new album Between The Times And The Tides so make sure you don’t miss out on this one. And don’t miss Lee’s show the night before at Brick & Mortar Music Hall.

VIDEO : Lee Ranaldo – “Angles”

If you’ve yet to check out Lee Ranaldo’s ‘Between The Times & The Tides’, you’re running the considerable risk of missing the boat on one of 2012’s most thrilling rock albums. I mean, we’d usually encourage you to take risks in your personal life, but that’s why there are pursuits such as autoerotic asphyxiation hang-gliding.

“Angles” is the second video from “Between The Times & The Tides” ; it premiered earlier today via New York Magazine, and here’s some notes from director (and longtime collaborator) Leah Singer.

This song felt very ‘New York’ to me. Time moves at a different pace here, fast and slow all at once.  In the video you see a girl running aimlessly yet urgently through the streets. The song implies that relationships move at their own pace too, watching time pass but always meeting back up, coming full circle with someone.  The swinging guitar pays homage to Lee’s experimental work and Z Behl, the girl, has been a friend since she was a child.  Josh and Brett from Red Bucket Films lend a hand. They worked with our kids on the feature film  ‘Daddy Longlegs’.  So it was a bit of a family affair.

‘Between The Times & The Tides’ is available NOW the Matador Store.

Three Wrongs….

Make a right, right?

Matador, Spotify and you.

Yes, we made a Spotify app and quite like it. Check it out for yourself here.

With releases, tour dates and then some.

While we’re talking about Spotify, have you checked out the Lee Jams playlist at Spotify?

The playlist is comprised of Lee’s best songs from Sonic Youth (as chosen by the Sonic Youth message board) as well a few instant-classics from the just-released Between The Times And The Tides.

I’ve been listening to it all afternoon, my ears are bleeding and I couldn’t be happier.

So check it out and lets us know what you think!

Lee Ranaldo: new record out today, on WFMU at 4PM EDT, Other Music instore at 9PM

Today is a busy day for Lee Ranaldo fans: not only is his Matador debut, Between The Times And The Tides out today in finer record stores and digital retailers, but there are two opportunities to sample the live Lee experience.

Tune in to WFMU for Brian Turner’s show (3pm to 6pm) for a scorcher of a live set and a slightly less scorching interview with the man himself, starting around 4pm EDT. WFMU is 91.1FM on your radio, or you can listen online at wfmu.org.

Later tonight, NYC’s Other Music will be hosting a free, all ages instore at 9PM EDT. We strongly suggest you get there early; you’re not the only one who’s psyched about the opportunity to see a living legend in such an intimate venue.

Don’t forget, starting today you can buy Lee’s album from all kinds of places, including right here.

Lee Ranaldo – seeing the sights of Europe (not Austin)

So whilst all one or two of those in the US music industry see it necessary to jet off for some essential music business type stuff (including, but not limited to ‘homeless hotspots‘. owl buses and a giant shopping cart) to save the future of the music industry, those of us in the UK are holding down the fort here on the matablog, takeover style.

So Mr Lee Ranaldo is heading over to Europe in May, we already told you about the London and Primavera Sound shows, but he’s wisely filled in the rest of the dates around the continent, plus there’s still dates in Holland, Denmark and Germany yet to be confirmed.

Those of you in the US still have shows throughout May and a NYC in-store.  Everyone everywhere can also enjoy the wonders of Lee’s new album right now.

Intended Play 2012 – For The Vinyl-Phobic Amongst, The Price Just Dropped From $2 To Free

(I really don’t see the resemblance)

Back in early January WE SHOCKED THE MUSIC WORLD with news of a $1.98 Matador/True Panther Sounds sampler LP including (mostly) new songs from The Young, Ceremony, Lee Ranaldo Tanlines, Perfume Genius, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Fucked Up, Girls, Cold Cave, Esben and The Witch and Kurt Vile. It’s come to our attention that a) there’s a few stragglers out there who’ve yet to order this limited edition LP, and b) some of you either trashed your record players or simply prefer music in digital form.

So here’s the deal — you can still order the vinyl version from The Matador Store or hound your local retailer who might’ve filed it in THE $2 BIN.  Failing that, here’s a free download of the entire compilation. You’re welcome!

Lee Ranaldo in London

The above poster does a pretty good job in transmitting the message that Lee Ranaldo will in fact be making an appearance in London this June (shortly after his Primavera performance), though it fails to mention he’ll also be joined by Steve Shelley, Alan Licht and Irwin Menken to play many of the highlights from Between The Times and The Tides.

ATP have all the ticket links you could ever want right here and if you haven’t already seen Lee’s latest video for ‘Off The Wall’, then take a look at that below:

Lee Ranaldo – “Off The Wall”, First Video From ‘Between The Tides and the Times’

(EDITORIAL NOTATION : on March 20, we’ll be releasing Lee Ranaldo’s ‘Between The Tides and The Times’ on LP/CD and digital formats.  While the prospect of Lee being  backed by a host of gifted players including by not limited to Nels Cline, John Medeski, Alan Licht and Steve Shelley ought to pique the curiosity of every music with an ounce —-nay, several ounces — of musical taste, it’s the songs themselves that are gonna stick with you for years to come. We’re hoping to unveil videos for several of ’em over the course of the next few months, and “Off The Wall” is the first in that series. Lee provides the details, below. – GC)

Lee Ranaldo – “Off The Wall”, First MP3 from the forthcoming ‘Between The Times & The Tides’

As mentioned in this space a few weeks ago,
on March 20 we’lll be releasing Lee Ranaldo’s first song-based solo full-length, ‘Between The Times & The Tides’ on LP, CD and digital formats. While we’ve cited the songcraft,  the “shimmering and melodic tapestry of sounds” the assembly of ‘a terrific new band right under our noses’, none of that does much good until you’re given a hint exactly what we’re shouting about. And without further technical difficulties ado, here’s “Off The Wall”

Lee Ranaldo“Off The Wall” (mp3)

We’re taking preorders for ‘Between The Times & The Tides’ starting today at the Matador Store. In the days ahead, tour dates for the Lee Ranaldo Band will be unveiled in this space. And other spaces.

Coming March 20, Lee Ranaldo’s ‘Between The Times & The Tides’

“Songs can go a million different ways,” declares Lee Ranaldo in the liner notes for his forthcoming Matador solo album, ‘Between The Times & The Tides’, and let me be the first to accuse the Sonic Youth guitarist / not-often-enough vocalist of severe hyperbole. The kinetic, crafted results on ‘Between…’ are more in the several thousand territory, but it’s most certainly a record that will amaze even the most ardent followers of Ranaldo’s work.  Joined by an all-star cast including Nels Cline, Alan Licht, John Medeski, bassist Irwin Menken and longtime associate Steve Shelley (and featuring cameos from old friends Jim O’Rourke and Bob Bert), the album is equal parts smart, confident and loose in a manner that recalls some of our favorite rock’n’roll projects…yet sounds like a fantastic new band that was apparently being assembled right under our noses.

Fresh off a Bell House date last month supporting Wild Flag, Lee and a lineup featuring Alan Licht, Irwin Menken and Steve Shelley will be playing Glasslands, Friday December 16.   2012 tour dates will announced when we have ’em, and look forward to preorder info from the Matador Store and other outlets shortly as well.
