Lee Ranaldo – Solo Acoustic Dates In Europe

By Gerard on Monday, September 8th, 2014

From Lee :

“While the members of The Dust are scattered to the four winds for a little while, I’m undertaking a solo acoustic tour in Europe. The plan is to play selections from the two albums, some covers and hopefully some of the new songs I’m currently working on, and to play them as most of them originated – on acoustic guitars, in stripped down style. Guitar and voice, little or no fuzz. Anyway that’s the plan right now, this will be a further ‘acoustic experiment’ for me. We’ve sought out small capacity, intimate venues with good acoustics for these shows. Hope to see some of you along the way.”

Lee Ranaldo & The Dust – “Blackt Out” Short Film Premiere, European Dates This Month & Next

By Gerard on Monday, May 19th, 2014

Lee Ranaldo and the Dust: Blackt Out on Nowness.com

Over the weekend, Nowness premiered the above film directed by Fred Riedel and based on Lee Ranaldo’s “Blackt Out” (original studio version found on 2013′s ‘Last Night On Earth’) ; here’s Lee’s take on the 13 minute short :

The basic concept plays off particular images of the Velvet Underground as filmed by Andy Warhol in the late 60s, casually rehearsing at the Factory, performing (as The Exploding Plastic Inevitable) on St Marks Place with projections and dancers, and even Warhol’s famous ‘Screen Tests’. The character of “The Projectionist” is played by legendary NYC avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs (with whom both myself and director Fred Riedel studied back in the 70s). Among the dancers can be spotted former SY drummer Bob Bert. Longtime SY associate, director David Markey, is among those behind the camera on this piece. Shot at Sonic Youth studio Echo Canyon West as well as at live gigs in New York City and Los Angeles.

Lee and the Dust return to Europe next Sunday for the following shows :

May 25 Kortrijk, Belgium – De Kreun
May 26 Antwerpen, Belgium – Trix

Coming October 8 : Lee Ranaldo & The Dust – ‘Last Night On Earth’ LP/CD/digital album

By Gerard on Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

photograph by John Von Pamer

“A solo record works best when you feel like you’re opening a window into somebody’s life, experiencing the things they’re going through or thinking about, places they’re seeing, through their eyes. At its best, you find a universality in it.”

– Lee Ranaldo

On October 8 (October 7 in the UK and Europe), Matador will be releasing ‘Last Night On Earth’,  the album from Sonic Youth founding member Lee Ranaldo and The Dust (drummer Steve Shelley, guitarist Alan Licht and bassist Tim Lüntzel). A more intense, expansive work than 2012′s ‘Between The Times & The Tides’,  ‘Last Night’  — while certainly darker in tone & lyrical content than its immediate predecessor, is the sort of dizzying electric guitar clinic that ranks amongst the best from any era.  After an exhaustive stretch of domestic and international touring (with more to come — see below) Lee & The Dust have formed a powerhouse unit, and we’re confident the results of these Echo Canyon West sessions will impress & inspire for months to come, if not far longer.  Here’s an initial sample in the album’s “Lecce, Leaving” :

(below : Lee discusses the album with WNYC “Soundcheck”‘s John Schaefer)

Important Festival News (For Those Who Mysteriously Fail To Read Other Music/News Sites)

By Gerard on Friday, July 13th, 2012

If you’re like us (and I suspect you are), YOU LOVE MUSIC FESTIVALS almost as much as you love freedom. And there’s so many that are close to our hearts.  Matador’s Lost Weekend.  Atlamont.  The Gathering Of The Juggalos.  The Cornerstone Festival.  I could go on, but you’ve probably got some illegal downloading to back to, so let’s cut to the chase. Transmission Entertainment’s 7th annual Fun Fun Fun Festival is happening in Austin, TX this coming November 2, 3 and 4, and we’re thrilled to find out at the last minute announce Tanlines, Fucked Up, Paul Banks and The Young are all taking part.

YouTube Preview Image

Likewise,  ATP America’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” weekender (September 21-23) has been moved from Asbury Park, NJ to the glamorous West Side of Manhattan.  The Lee Ranaldo Band and Chavez will be playing, along with a tremendous lineup of performers, none of whom are named Louis C.K.   They’ll all have their hands full measuring up to Richie Blackmore at California Jam (above) , but there’s no harm in trying.
