Coming November 9 : boygenius

(photo : Lera Pentelute)

The rumors are true: boygenius, the band of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus will release their self-titled EP debut on November 9th on Matador. The illustrious trio is comprised of the most exciting and visionary young songwriters in independent rock, whose critically acclaimed albums were all released in the past year (‘Turn Out The Lights’, ‘Stranger In The Alps’, and ‘Historian’, respectively). To celebrate today’s announcement, boygenius has released a captivating triumvirate of new songs titled “Stay Down,” “Me & My Dog,” and “Bite The Hand,” which can be heard HERE.

Baker and Bridgers will hit the road in North America this fall for a co-headline tour, with Dacus opening. Each artist will play her own individual set of tunes, but fans just might be able to hear some boygenius songs along the way – though that’s another rumor we can’t yet confirm. The tour kicks off at Nashville’s  Ryman Auditorium on November 4th, and hits major markets in the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast, culminating at The Wiltern in LA on November 30. The full list of tour dates, as well as each individual artist’s itinerary, can be found below.

VIDEO : Julien Baker – “Appointments”

Julien Baker – “Appointments” – directed by Sophia Peer
From the album ‘Turn Out The Lights’, out October 27

“Making the ‘Appointments’ video was an incredibly special experience because I got the pleasure of collaborating with artists I admire and to see them apply their creativity and talent to something I made,” says Baker. “I’ve known Christina McKinney (choreographer), as well as a few of the dancers, since I was a kid. I’ve always been fascinated with how that art form works in tandem with music; it was amazing to see the vision that Christina had for the song, how she interpreted the sounds as movement, and then to see how Sophia chose to portray and capture it all.

“It felt very full circle to return to Memphis to work on this, I’m so proud of Memphis and wanted to show off the immense artistry that I see there. Not only were Christina and many of the characters in the video friends, but the crew also included many people I have known and worked with for years. All the scenes and locations are also central to Memphis, I think Sophia did such a good job of preserving the intimate feel of the video by shooting it with people/in locations that had significance to me, and I’m so thankful. The most gratifying part of making music is its ability to be shared and belong to more people than myself, and it was very meaningful to make something with and for other people, to take something as personal as this song and invite others in, allow them to contribute their ‘thing,’ whatever it may be.” – Julien Baker

Coming October 27 : Julien Baker – ‘Turn Out The Lights’ ; Stream Or Download “Appointments” Today

(photo : Nolan Knight)

Julien Baker will release her highly anticipated second album,’Turn Out The Lights’ on October 27th, 2017. An early preview can now be heard in the first single “Appointments”, a viscerally moving track that culminates in a swell of Baker’s voice, guitar, and piano. ‘Turn Out The Lights’ will arrive nearly two years to the day after her debut LP, ‘Sprained Ankle’ (originally released by 6131) and is now available for pre-order HERE.

Recorded at the legendary Ardent Studios in Baker’s hometown of Memphis, TN, ‘Turn Out The Lights’ expands upon the sound and vision of Sprained Ankle while retaining the haunting, confessional songwriting style for which she has become known. Throughout the album, she reflects on experiences of her own and those closest to her, exploring the internal conflicts that wrestle inside us all: how we deal and cope with our struggles, and how it all impacts both ourselves and our relationships of all kinds. The result is a deeply empathetic album that embraces the grays and complex truths of humanity and mental health. Turn Out The Lights was written and produced by Baker, and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Arcade Fire, Florence & the Machine).

Julien Baker – ‘Sprained Ankle’ re-release, “Funeral Pyre” 7″, 2017 Touring

Julienpress

We’re very thrilled to announce the signing of Memphis, TN-based songwriter Julien Baker. The 21-year-old’s widelyacclaimed 2015 debut album, ‘Sprained Ankle’ (originally released by 6131) is available now digitally, with Matador’s LP and CD reissue available in all territories (save for North America and Australia) on March 17. We’ll be releasing Julien’s next studio album everywhere.

Funeralpack

(7″ sleeve photo by Kaitlin Gladney)

As premiered earlier this morning via NPR’s “All Songs Considered”, you can hear the previously unreleased “Funeral Pyre”, the A-side for Baker’s new 7”, out on March 17th on Matador*. Only Baker can make a song with such a darkly macabre title so heartbreakingly gorgeous, with her signature hushed-yet-lofty vocals soaring over a quietly finger-picked melody that crescendos into layered, almost-orchestral beauty. The B-side, “Distant Solar System,” is another unheard song from the ‘Sprained Ankle’ sessions.

(* – said 7″ will be included in the international editions of the ‘Sprained Ankle’ LP ; however, the single will be available for stand-alone purchase in North America).
