Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile & The Sea Lice make their (collaborative) national TV debut tonight at 11:35 pm (eastern) on CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”. Colbert’s other guests tonight are Whoopi Goldberg and Katheryn Hahn. I remain hopeful the former will be asked to confirm or deny plans for a sequel to this 1996 classic, but experienced talk show hosts know how to do their jobs without further interference.
While in Los Angeles earlier this month celebrating the release of their collaborative LP Lotta Sea Lice, Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile live-streamed “Sea Lice By The Seaside”, a performance of several tracks from the new album. The webcast, shot along the ocean-side of Malibu, features Courtney & Kurt joined by the all-star backing band they currently have out with them on their sold-out North American tour. Pitchfork has the entire stream posted on YouTube, watch below:
Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile have teamed with Spotify for an intercontinental mixtape exchange in the spirit of their new album Lotta Sea Lice. Listeners can make a new musical friend by submitting a playlist, sending it into the world as a digital postcard and immediately receiving a playlist postcard in exchange.
Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile are in California this week celebrating the release of their collaborative LP Lotta Sea Lice. After performing at KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic on Tuesday, an Amoeba in-store on Thursday, and a headlining slot at Desert Daze in Joshua Tree over the weekend, it’s time for the duo kick back and dip a toe in the Pacific waters. “Sea Lice By The Seaside”, a Pitchfork Live webcast, features Courtney, Kurt and their all-star backing band performing tracks off of the new record at an ocean-side Malibu mansion. The continental breakfast spread is rumored to be excellent. Pitchfork’s webcast is live Today at 2pm EST/11am PDT, watch the stream here.
Just a HIGH PRESSURE reminder for you that today marks the official release date for Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile’s fantastic collaboration album, ‘Lotta Sea Lice’. Following Wednesday’s session for KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” and an instore last night at a packed Amoeba Records in Hollywood, the duo recommence their mostly-sold-old North American tour at the Desert Days Festival in Joshua Tree, CA.
We’re a few days away from the release of Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile’s hotly anticipated collaboration album, ‘Lotta Sea Lice’ and as you’d expect, they’re an insane amount of activity surrounding this momentous event. After a Sunday afternoon set at San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival the duo visit KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic for a live broadcast starting at 11:15am pacific time TODAY. Thursday, there’s a free show at Hollywood’s Amoeba Records, who’ve somehow managed to obtain copies of ‘Lotta Sea Lice’ one day early. And on Monday afternoon, there’s a Pitchfork Live webcast taking place from what’s said to be Jimmy Page’s former Malibu residence (this seems suspicious as we had it good authority he took his holidays in Cliftwood, NJ…or maybe that was Southside Johnny. Hard to remember sometimes)
This morning, we’re happy to share the next take from the upcoming album from Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Lotta Sea Lice. The video for “Continental Breakfast” was directed by Danny Cohen (@DannyZCohen), who was also behind the lens for the “Over Everything” video released last month. This new video also spans a great distance (does not get much further than Melbourne and Philly. It’s a really special video and we don’t throw that world around too much. Watch and you’ll see why.
Director Danny Cohen says:
‘Continental Breakfast’ was made while spending time with Courtney and Kurt in Melbourne and Philadelphia, it’s an intimate home movie into their lives and the time spent with family and friends between recording /touring. Shot on 16mm, the mini-documentary captures honest moments that show the loving and playful nature of both Courtney and Kurt. It was such a treat to experience life with Courtney and Kurt in their natural habitats. It really left me feeling like part of the family and hopefully fans can feel that too.
More Courtney and Kurt news comes from Amoeba Hollywood, where they just announced an in-store on Thursday, October 12th. Fans can attend the in-store by picking up Lotta Sea Lice a day early at Amoeba Hollywood starting on Thursday October 12. More details can be found on the flyer below or head to Amoeba.com.

Here’s a bit more about the album…
Lotta Sea Lice is a conversation between friends, documented in raw, unvarnished song, brimming with personal history, crackling with energy and shot through with humor. What started as a loose plan to record a couple songs with no plans for release, turned into this full-length-“because the vibee was so strong,” says Kurt. There’s an unforced ease to the record, helped by the fact that the pair have been not just friends, but hardcore fans of each other’s work for years. They also roped in colleagues such as Mick Turner and Jim White of the Dirty Three, Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint, and Aussie icon Mick Harvey.
The shared chemistry is immediately apparent in the album opener and first single “Over Everything”, with dovetailing vocal lines and intricate, shimmering guitar. The lyrics play out as a rambling dialogue as they compare notes about songwriting and inspiration; it was the first song written for this project. The video was directed by Danny Cohen, who shot each on their home turf.
The pair also tackle each other’s tracks on the album, with Vile delivering a delicious, souped-up version of “Outta the Woodwork” backed by Barnett herself, and Barnett taking on Vile’s “Peepin’ Tomboy” completely solo, to spine-tingling result. The overall effect of Lotta Sea Lice is of Barnett and Vile throwing open the doors to their house to listeners – it’s their party, but everyone is invited.
