LEMONADE “Diver” out May 29, 2012. (Mp3)

All of us at True Panther Sounds are very pleased to announce the forthcoming release of Diver the 2nd album by Lemonade available worldwide on May 29th.

Diver is a sensual, bold electronic record, swimming ecstatically in the melodies of early 90’s R&B, UK 2-step Garage, Balearic house and NY freestyle. The trio, Callan Clendenin (vocals), Ben Steidel (synths, bass) and Alex Pasternak (drums, programming) recorded the album over the course of several years, at home in New York, on tour in Brazil between shows, or in their practice space in the basement of an old Catholic school. Ultimately, the album came to life when the band recruited producer Le Chev (Frankie Rose, Fischerspooner, SSION) to add the finishing touches and assist in fully realizing the band’s vision of Diver.

The music that Mary Anne Hobbs once called “pure, agile, hedonistic pop music,” is still there, but in an infinitely more potent and focused form. Callan’s lyricism reaches new intimate lows and ecstatic highs. Where Lemonade used to seek transcendence through psychedelic dance-floor physicality, Callan now looks inward, at the emotions of limited means, the urban everyday, and his attempts to hold on to redemptive love and romance in a cybernetic, information-rich world. Lemonade reference PM Dawn and Sade in the same sentence as Julio Bashmore and Swedish House Mafia. They are sounds of the past synthesized with contemporary dance music boueyed by the most immediate matters of the heart.

“Neptune”, the first taste from Diver, is a case in point. It’s a pure and emotional R&B track, an instant and surprising classic. The single will be released next month with remixes from Mike Simonetti, Jacques Renault, and Sinjin Hawke. Stay tuned for more info.

Tanlines “All of Me” Mp3

We’re nearing the March 20th release of Mixed Emotions on True Panther Sounds. You’ve already spent some time wrapping your head around the album opener Brothers (and the progressive house rave r die, thizz yr brains out remix) so now here’s something new.

“All of Me” is the kind of spirited and soaring track Tanlines have somehow gotten really really really good at making. An intimate song about love and fear busted out into a digital stadium. It’s a SPRING song more than a summer song, maybe even a springtime in New York song…which is convenient because this spring is going to have some Tanlines tour dates that you can find below. Hope you enjoy the track and pre-order the record, which you can get on mailorder exclusive color vinyl for the time being.

Tanlines “Brothers” Video and Tour Dates

Tanlines made a really amazing video for Mixed Emotions‘ first track Brothers. We’ve all spent a lot of time talking about what it is to make MUSIC VIDEOS in this day and age, and as they do, Tanlines found a way to do something a little different- to make an intimate, simple story take on a few extra layers….to be able to tell a simple story that can be retold in an infinite number of ways. The video is shot using a 360-degree GoPano lens and has enough easter eggs to justify a few repeated views. Maybe it’s the “You can call me al” of the 360 generation. We want to thank EyeSee360 (specifically Amey) for lending us this equipment thus allowing us the privilege of actually being able to AFFORD doing something a little different.

Tanlines “Mixed Emotions” Out on True Panther 3.20.12

Brooklyn, NY’s Tanlines will release their debut album, Mixed Emotions, on our imprint True Panther Sounds on March 20th, 2012. It was recorded in various NYC home studios and mixed in Miami by legendary mixing engineer Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland, Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Television, Roxy Music). Mixed Emotion’s first taste, “Brothers,” is available for download from their site or direct download below…

Tanlines- Brothers (mp3)

Anyone well-versed with New York City’s diverse music scene for the last few years knows Mixed Emotions is a long time coming. Since their first song hit the web in 2008, Tanlines – comprised of Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass) – have been steadily releasing genius dance singles with labels across the globe, including True Panther, Young Turks and Kitsune. Their live show has taken them worldwide, playing at the likes of The Guggenheim, The Whitney and more in their hometown, as well as an opening slot on Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas’s solo tour in 2009. But it was an ill-fated European tour – filled with some of the most disappointing shows of their respective careers – that ultimately led to Mixed Emotion’s genesis. The band spent long hours driving through Europe, listening to albums by R.E.M., skate punk records from the 80’s, Born in the USA, and more. As Eric explains it, “Listening to them, I became very aware of the lasting resonance of a good song. A good song transcends production trends. That’s what we were missing, and I wanted to start making songs that would have a life of their own.”

The band returned from Europe only to be greeted with a larger problem: making such songs in Emm’s studio, which was not only the place where they created, but the place where they met prior to forming the band, would be impossible; the building that housed his eight year old studio had been sold. It is ultimately this sense of starting over that helps informs some of Mixed Emotion’s most palpable moments.

Mixed Emotions is a testament to the benefits and pitfalls of life’s changes, getting older, and being pushed out of one’s comfort zone. The band that was born out of a studio suddenly had to become, well, a band. Songs were written simply on a guitar, with the band later adding their palette of electronic and organic sounds afterwards. Emm honed his voice, a confident and tranquil baritone, and focused on lyricism, something he had not done seriously in the past. He sings stories about loss, the passage of time, and the lessons and warnings of accumulated knowledge gleaned by someone who has spent an entire lifetime in music. The process stretched the duo – Cohen likened making the album to that of making a film when it was done – and Mixed Emotions is all the better for it.

Sometimes painful, sometimes transcendent, and ultimately a very precise labor of love, Mixed Emotions simply feels vivid. Songs pulse and linger, filled with percussive textures, bright, warm synths and driving kick drums to juxtapose the album’s lyrical melancholia. The record obscures and blurs the lines between synthetic and organic, real and fake, happy and sad. It is the sound of stadium pop in small spaces. And it is one of the most remarkable debut albums you will hear in 2012.

Tanlines will be playing shows across the U.S. this spring. More info to come!

It’s a GIRLS World

This weekend, Girls bowled over a massive crowd at Austin’s Fun, Fun, Fun fest. In a way it was the culmination of the last few months which saw their album Father, Son, Holy Ghost draw pretty universal praise, and the completion of a US tour that really established them as one of the strongest live rock bands going these days. SPIN said the Fun, Fun, Fun fest fest was the “Best Breakout Set” of the festival. We have to agree.

To celebrate we’d like to share a couple of things with you.

First, our friends at iTunes have made Father, Son, Holy Ghost available for a very limited time for only $5.99. If you haven’t copped the record yet, now is the time.

Buy from iTunes HERE

Second, when Girls were here in NYC last time they spent a day with the folks at Pitchfork filming an absolutely beautiful session in an abandoned church in Greenpoint. The band, along with Makeda Francisco, Skyler Lucas and Tracy Nelson, the lovely and talented singers who you may have seen accompany the band on select dates, TORE THROUGH a few of the newer songs. Crushing and awesome.

To view the full session click here.

Luckily for those of you in Europe, the band start a tour there today. As for the States, southern California will play host to two very special nights with Girls in Los Angeles and Santa Ana, in early December. New York in January. For more details about their upcoming US/Euroepan dates and their newly announced single “Lawrence” click HERE

Thank you for reading and for the continued support.

Girls “Vomit” MP3 + Tour Dates

On September 13th, 2011, San Francisco’s Girls will release their second album Father, Son, Holy Ghost on True Panther. Two years after their debut (Album), and one year after the follow-up EP (Broken Dreams Club) it is the natural third entry in Girls’ recorded trinity, and features their most accomplished recordings to date. Both previous releases demonstrated that behind the noise of a back story loud enough to swallow most bands, stood two true rock craftsmen and traditionalists, who convey their own intimate, unique, and troubled visions.

For Father, Son, Holy Ghost Christopher Owens and JR White holed up in a basement recording studio located in San Francisco’s downtown Tenderloin district and “Vomit” is the first offering from those sessions. The juxtaposition of pain and beauty – hope and misery – which lie at the heart of classic rock and gospel music, are at the core of the song and the album.

Christopher shares his own thoughts: “I wrote vomit before Girls was even a band or an idea, this is one of the first songs I ever wrote along with ‘Substance’ and ‘Headache’ what you’re hearing in “Vomit” is someone who is at life’s lowest, seeing the light, and becoming a songwriter.”

New album from Girls

On September 13th, 2011 San Francisco’s Girls will release their second album and third record Father, Son, Holy Ghost on our imprint, True Panther Sounds and Turnstile in the UK/Europe. The album comes two years after their debut (Album), and one year after the follow-up EP (Broken Dreams Club).

On the third anniversary of the birth of Girls as a band Christopher Owens and Chet White found themselves entering the studio to begin recording their second album. More a collection of gear than a studio, recording took place in the bowels of a San Francisco office building. The two teamed up with new drummer Darren Weiss and guitarist John Anderson assembling performances and ultimately creating new music and musical relationships to carry the band through its newest incarnation.

Girls have taken what they’ve always done best and have displayed it with amazing clarity and the strongest of intent. Classic songwriting coupled with exciting production is their way. “I’m still all the same,” Owens says. “I still know I have to do it. I still love the songs and writing songs.”

Father. Son, Holy Ghost is at times ebullient and at times absolutely devastating. A truly beautiful record and the perfect amalgamation of a band’s past and present while most importantly leaving us all excited and hungry for their future.

GLASSER: The QR Code and the Damage Done

As you may have seen on the internets the last few days, our very own Glasser performed on the Jimmy Fallon show on Monday. The concept of using QR codes on TV came from a desire to create a more interactive experience for viewers of the show (shouting out “yo hit me up on Twitter” just didn’t cut it). So we places a series of QR codes around the stage to embed special content in the performance.

About the QR Codes

We wanted to solve the problem of how can people at home or in an audience feel a greater level of participation than just sitting and listening. By using QR codes people will explore and find embedded content that was previously not available to them and have a richer viewing experience. Glasser is not a 2-dimensional artist- the primary thing that drew us into her music was the 3D world that her music and her personality invoke- it’s a world you want to dive into.

Rather than just use standard QR code generators, Glasser wanted to re-interpret the album cover for Ring. To achieve this, RISD graduate student, Kyuha Shim, built a system using programming language that receives color data sets from Glasser’s album graphics and adapts them to the modules that she designed. The result is an aesthetic for the QR codes that both departs from the monochromatic standards for QR codes, and more importantly ties the experience back to the album sleeve originally designed by Tauba Auerbach.

About the Embedded Content

Each QR code on the set of the performance links to a unique Glasser-related space, primarily via QR scanners on mobile phones.
They are a series of online 3D “zones” developed by Mitch Trale with Glasser. The zones create an added visual layer to the experience while also being a portal for content. While it was initially only accessible through the QR codes, it’s now embeddable for you and whoever else to post around and share. You can get the album cheap, download mp3s, view a music vid and watch the performance itself. Hope you have as much psychedelic/next-level fun messing around in this zone as we did conceiving and executing this whole crazy idea.

The best part is that the experience lives on after the show. Hopefully people will continue to discover and share the codes long after the broadcast is over.

You can dive into the zone below.By clicking HERE HINT THE ACTUAL FALLON PERFORMANCE IS IN THE BLUE GEM

Let It Bleed

I gave my heart to music when I was 7 years old in San Jose, California. My family had just arrived in America from Russia. Our first home was a one-bedroom apartment across from the projects on Cherry Street. I still remember my mom unpacking the box of records she’d brought from Russia and setting up our JCC-provided turntable. Some of the records were children’s stories, some were classical music but it was the state-issued bootlegs of rock & roll that caught my attention. I’d listen to those Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Aquarium (Russian rock band) albums and feel this new bubbling joy. I’d roll around on the floor laughing hysterically just from being so overwhelmed by feeling. My mom gave me the Definitive Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock for my 10th birthday. I pored over its pages, memorizing the artists, drawing stories from their photos and imagining the significance of the song titles found in their singles charts. I loved that book, and I loved every song I could track down from it. To top it off, I didn’t have to fear loving these songs. They wouldn’t leave, they wouldn’t make me feel hurt, alien, lost or confused. Every time I listened they would give more than they had before, unpacking stories and feelings, an endless amount of gifts that rewarded commitment. You could pass this love along, a song played for a friend, a shared experience could bond you.  Even as I got older and continued to be afraid of committing to loving and trusting people, I knew I could at least share love with them through music, we could experience a fearless love together by cherishing something that was beyond ourselves. We could find ourselves and our feelings for each other in our love for a song.

“I was feeling so sad alone then I found a friend in this song I was singing. I  was feeling like a nothing inside then I found it all in a song.”  -Girls “Darling”

Before really knowing what love was, I learned the language of love songs. For better or worse, every loving relationship I’ve had has used those songs as a watermark. Does spending time with this person feel like the lyrics to “Ring of Fire”? Is that good or bad!? Is this feeling of watching my girlfriend sleep what Curtis Mayfield felt in “I’m So Proud”? And to summon Curtis again, does the breakup summon the same fire as “7 Years”? I don’t really cook, I can’t sing, write songs or poems, can’t paint, I express my emotions with the hyperbole laden maturity of a 10 year old, honestly. The only certain way I could find to say what I meant to someone or understand it myself, was in sharing a song. No fumbling words, no uncertainty or compromise. What is there in our world that’s harder to express than love? Hate, fear, joy and anxiety are easy. But love is all those things and more. It’s so massive, so powerful. My sister who is one of the people I love most in this world recently turned 10 and got her own email account and we now send songs and itunes links back and forth to each other. Her fearless love of the people and world around her, despite experiences that would’ve crippled another child inspire me every day. Sure on one hand the exchanges are pedagogical, but I like to think there is something else at play. That in sharing the songs that speak to us we’re building a common language to understand our familial love for each other.  I guess that impulse runs in our blood. Anyhow, it’s more effective than emoticons.

“Love, by its very nature, is unworldly, and it is for this reason rather than its rarity that it is not only apolitical but anti-political, perhaps the most powerful of all anti-political human forces.”” -Hannah Arendt

Love is not democratic. Reflexively, the job of the love song is not to build communities. Morality has no place in a love song. The love song’s purpose is to give two people the tools they need to understand this fearsome thing they have between them, being in love puts you in conflict with the world outside of that relationship- all the elements that challenge and disrupt that already destabilizing bond. Aristotle said that love is a “single soul dwelling in two bodies”. The perfect love song helps us understand this alien inhabitant that bonds us together with another/disrupts our lives.

I’ve often tried to understand why despite being such a sap I’ve been so drawn to angry music and its various political & social structures. In times in my life, as with a lot of young peoples lives to a certain extent, when love fails to show up, lets you down or leaves you behind, there’s a certain comfort in building ad-hoc communities based around rejection and disillusionment. It’s ironic that Belle & Sebastian are the inspiration for this way too long ramble then. Because in high school, at the apex of submersion into hardcore and punk, I found a band that spoke to our need to love. That despite being a little strange and frustrated teenager love wasn’t something to fear. It carried riches and experiences that were invisible to those who push love away. It hurts, dies, comes back, changes heats up and cools down but the moments that it burns inside of us define our lives. Life is hard. People you love, family members, friends and other loved one screw you over, betray you and lie. But succumbing to fear and letting your past pain block your ability to embrace love is giving up life’s greatest treasure. I’m eternally grateful to B&S for reminding me of that.

My heart belongs to music because it’s the best way I’ve found to process the love that has come and gone in my life, and the best vessel i’ve found for sharing it. It binds my family together, and reminds me to stay open to love that comes in the future. Music is my lifelong bleeding-heart companion, and every day I feel grateful that my life is based around sharing and treasuring its bounty.  Maybe it’s not the most sophisticated way to live, but at age 28, it might be a little too late to change. Oh well…LET IT BLEED!
