Lee Ranaldo and The Dust, Soundchecking Today!

On the heels of last week’s album premiere, and on the eve of tomorrow’s album release, Lee Ranaldo And The Dust will be performing a selection of tunes from their new album Last Night On Earth today for WNYC’s Soundcheck. The set streams live at Soundcheck.org and WNYC.org starting at 2pm EDT. Those of you who prefer your radio sessions on the actual radio, stay tuned (no pun intended) to the Matablog for broadcast details.

A Note and A New Song From Glasser

The last public show Glasser played was February of last year. Since then, she’s been locked away in a studio working on her follow-up to 2010′s Ring. She’s playing her first show since then this weekend at LA’s FYF Fest. She’s decided to use the occasion to release her first new music in a while. The song is called “Shape”, it’s a very powerful song, and we can honestly say that it’s one of the best pieces of music that’s ever come out under the True Panther imprint. More Glasser very soon…in the meantime enjoy the music and this note from her.

I have been thinking a lot about space. Not only outer space and physical boundaries, but also inner mental space. There are so many beginnings and endings and edges and shores inside and outside our minds. Some are impossible to scale and they make us feel small. I feel small and far removed at times, and I push myself farther away in a kind of compulsion. These are physical comforts I cling to, but always when I cling to them I realize that the isolation I’m afraid of is in my heart and not on a crowded sidewalk. I also have moments of ecstasy, milestones that drive me forward in search of more. These emotions and sensations elude me though, they seem to exist in their own seperate planes. I still chase them. I can become so mesmerized by something outside myself, a person or place that I try to reflect its power and the way it makes me feel.

This is why I feel so lucky to be able to make art, especially music. My experiences flow together and become the stuff of invention. I spent the last year and a half making my new album, which will come out in October. I thought about architecture, a physical imposition in my life, and the fluid emotional boundaries of relationships, also sometimes imposed.

More news to come, in the meantime, enjoy “SHAPE”

Yo La Tengo on WFUV Tonight (9pm EDT)

You might have thought, given the wealth of amazing Yo La Tengo radio sessions that we’ve alerted you to in this space, that the well had finally run dry and there would be no more new radio action from Ira, Georgia and James. You would, as you probably have guessed by now, have been completely wrong. The above video is from a recent session the band did at New York’s WFUV, which can be listened to in its entirety here . New Yorkers with a hankering to listen on their radio dial should tune in to 90.7FM at 9PM EDT tonight.

It’s Summer, Get To Know Your TANLINES

SUMMER IS  HERE!…ok well it officially starts tomorrow but we can’t contain our excitement so we’re getting started a day early.   Ahhh Summer, the season of extended daylight, backyard BBQs, road trips with friends, summer playlists, and Tanlines + Lemonade of course.

Apologies for that simple and obvious play on words.  But honestly as sure as you’re likely to have some tan lines after laying around the pool drinking a glass of lemonade this summer, we’re convinced both bands (Tanlines and Lemonade) will be on your iPods/stereos while doing so.  But don’t take our word for it, Creator’s Project said that Tanlines are “destined to become your summer soundtrack”, and New York Magazine, Stereogum, and Refinery 29 couldn’t agree more, naming “All Of Me” one of their Songs Of The Summer.

Anyhow since we’ll be spending all summer together, it’s probably a good time to get to know your Tanlines better.  Courtesy of Creator’s Project, click HERE for an intimate look at the band Tanlines, their recording process, how they formed, and much much more.

Also Tanlines will be performing across the US all summer long, starting tomorrow night with an official summer kick off show at the House of Vans in Brooklyn.  A full list of summer tour dates is below.

Girls are now headed into the desert for a special show at Pappy & Harriet’s tonight in Pioneertown, CA and then hit Coachella tomorrow for the second weekend of madness.

Esben and the Witch tour the US!

A striking clip of Eumenides premiered today via Fader. It was captured in early February from Esben and the Witch’s album release show in their hometown of Brighton, UK.  And for those who haven’t seen them live this is simply a taste of the dark, moody, and loud experience that is Esben and the Witch live.

Luckily for those of us in the US with a real appetite for Esben and the Witch, they start their first headline tour tonight in our nation’s capitol.  With a major stop in Austin for SXSW (3/16-3/19, more details on that to come shortly) they’ll be crossing our vast continent making the following major stops.

Esben & The Witch album premiere

so it was 6 degrees F (-14 Celsius) when I left for the office this morning.  A crisp, bright, and beautiful winter morning.  Admittedly I’m in quite a positive head space for a frigid, January, Monday morning but I digress.  Esben & The Witch appear to be in an equally friendly mood this winter’s day and have premiered their debut album Violet Cries, in full, via Stereogum

and if you missed it last week, please be sure to check out Esben & The Witch’s second music video “Warpath” and remember they’ll be touring throughout Europe and the US this February + March.

Times New Viking – 2/11 Don’t Forget

For some people: Burt Reynolds, Larry Merchant, Leslie Nielsen, and Jennifer Aniston to name a few, 2/11 can never be forgotten, it’s their birthday. For sports fans 2/11 marks the day Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson (1990), Dean Smith (UNC) racked up his 600th career coaching win (1987), and Willie Mays became the highest paid player in baseball with an annual salary of $130,000 (1966). Others who are historically inclined remember 2/11 as the day Mandela was freed after 27 years in prison (1990), Dwight Eisenhower became the commander of allied forces in Europe (1943), and Pennsylvania Hospital, the first in America, was opened in large part because of Benjamin Franklin (1752).

So as I’ve demonstrated there are plenty of reasons to never forget 2/11. But in our humble opinion there is no reason more important than Times New Viking and their greatly under appreciated album of last fall, Born Again Revisited. So in doing our part to never forget 2/11, we’re offering a free MP3 download of TNV’s 2/11 Don’t Forget with a few stipulations. 1) you play it loud and often, and 2) you never forget 2/11. We never will.

Yo La Tengo & Times New Viking, Tour Revisited

As the year comes to an end and the spirit of revisiting things takes us over, we’ve come across the following comment that Jared Phillips (Times New Viking) made to Pitchfork back in January 2008 when discussing life on the road:

I don’t know where the best place we’ve played would be. Probably one of those places that we played with Yo La Tengo that we’ll never get to play again [ laughs ]. Those were all pretty fun but, you know, if it ever happens we’ll be 40 years old by the time we play in a place that big again.

So I guess we’d just like to be the first to say happy 40th to TNV because this coming January good times are rolling through towns from Michigan south to Texas. That’s right like any good combination (chocolate and peanut butter immediately comes to mind), Yo La Tengo and Times New Viking have decided to revisit the road and live performance format together this coming January. If you’re in one of the towns below be sure to catch what should be the chocolate and peanut butter of live shows, for the early part of 2010 at the very least. Tickets are on sale now!!!!

Sun, Jan 24 / St. Louis, MO / The Pageant

Mission of Burma air their not so Dirty Laundry

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/7934432[/vimeo]

While in Los Angeles during their November tour, Mission of Burma, or at least 3/4s of Burma, were able to air their dirty laundry from the comfort of the Echo’s artist green room. Admittedly Burma’s dirty laundry is lacking of any major dirt as the band opted to praise Matador honchos Gerard Cosloy and Patrick Amory, name check fellow label mates, Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, and thank Burma fans who have supported them for decades, instead of airing any grievances or talking any smack. But these days there is too much negativity anyway, so we were pleased just to watch them tell their story.

A nice backstage conversation, courtesy of Dirty Laundry TV, which shows just how nice these guys really are. If you’re in Boston or New York in January then stop by the following shows to see just how good these guys really are!

Fri, 1/15 – Boston – Paradise
Sat, 1/16 – Boston – Paradise
Fri, 1/29 – New York – Bowery Ballroom
Sat, 1/30 – New York – Bowery Ballroom
