Belle and Sebastian at Sundance Festival, Jan 20th

It’s finally here.  The much talked (and blogged) about God Help The Girl project of Stuart Murdoch sees the light of day for the first time next week, with the world premiere taking place at the Sundance Film Festival.  To mark the special occasion, Belle and Sebastian will be playing a one-off show at Sundance in Utah on Monday, January 20th, 100 pairs of tickets are up for grabs by emailing belleandsebastianatsundance@gmail.com – it’s first come, first served so get applying if you can attend.

Of performing and unveiling the film next week, Stuart says: “On behalf of the group and myself, I’d like to say how excited we are to be playing a short concert at the bequest of the Sundance Film Festival. In Park City, in Utah, in the snow. Did I say how excited we were? I’m like, vibrating.”

Yo La Tengo: listen again to their BBC 6music session

Yo La Tengo – posing for their Press Pop photo shoot

Given that James, Georgia and Ira have been on tour for pretty much the entire year since Fade was released back in January, you’d think we might have let up on twisting their arm for promotional opportunities, but with the promise of a good meal after, we persuaded them to record a BBC 6music session for Marc Riley last night.  Playing Ohm around the 46 minute mark, they followed with some chat and two more songs, with renditions of Paddle Forward and I’ll Be Around from the 1:16 mark – listen to all of those here.

Gideon Coe’s 6music show followed where the band had pre-recorded Is The Point Of It, also online now.  Currently on their way back to the US, their final shows of the year take place at The Bell House and are all sold-out.

Savages – ‘Marshal Dear’ video

Ahead of tomorrow’s Mercury Prize awards (get those bets in now!) Savages share their Slaughterhouse Five inspired video for ‘Marshal Dear’, taken from their debut album Silence Yourself (Matador Store, iTunes).

Inspired by a scene in Kurt Vonnegut’s classic novel about a disillusioned American soldier recounting his experiences of the Second World War and his adventures in time travel, guitarist Gemma Thompson scripted a rough version of the storyboard based upon one scene in particular with the intent on finding a young animator who had worked on animating by hand. After two months of watching portfolio reels, she eventually found the work of Gergely Wootsch, a London animation director just graduated from the RCA.

The scene from the novel occurs whilst main protagonist Billy believes he has become ‘‘unstuck in time.’‘ He turns on the TV and focuses on a scene in a movie about bombers in the Second World War. The aircraft take-off backwards from an airfield, flying backwards over cities in flame. The exploded bombs and shrapnel begin to piece themselves together and rise back into the bellies of the aircraft and the bullets are sucked out of the bodies of the fallen men. The bombs are eventually brought back to the factory in which they were constructed, dismantled and the elements placed back into the earth.

Speaking of the video, Gemma says “This scene would replay in my head and I could imagine it as an animation of lines flowing into each other, much like early hand-drawn animation created to accentuate a musical score. I also thought it was beautiful how Billy tries to right the process of destruction and how this echoed the true story of the character in the song Marshal Dear – Field Marshal Rommel’s attempted assassination of Hitler to end the Second World War which resulted in him being forced to take his own life to spare those of his family. We worked on bringing the character of the factory worker into the fore so that the animation now focused on the role of the woman working in the factory and the bomb itself as she realises her hand in the destruction.”
