The dates include a special show at 924 Gilman St, of which the band writes on their website:

We seek to rectify this with a very unique and experimental idea: A Five Dollar Punk Show. We’ll be joined on the bill by four kindred spirits; NO STATIK, SECRET PEOPLE,FACE THE RAIL and CAGED ANIMAL and we hope you will join us too. Friday May 17th at 7:30pm. All ages, naturally. Majical Cloudz “Bugs Don’t Buzz”

Bugs Don’t Buzz” is one of the many highlights of Majical Cloudz album ‘Impersonator‘  & and the band’s live show (which are happening right now!). Based around a single, looped piano progression, the song’s striking simplicity is one of those many secrets behind what makes Majical Cloudz so evocative.

Kurt Vile’s Wakin On A Pretty Daze is out now

… and you can buy it at the Matador store, iTunes, Amazon,  and perhaps most importantly, at your local indie retailler. And we say this cuz that’s where you’re gonna get the limited ultra deluxe 2xLP DIY GRAFFITI edition.

Watch Kurt Vile and the Violators play live today at 3pm, hosted by our friends at Pitchfork. And later on today in NYC, Kurt Vile stops at Apple’s apple store in Soho for a meet the musician interview with Matt Pinfield followed by a live performance — that’s at 6:30

This is one of those albums that both Q & Mojo both call “wonderful”, and how often does that happen? NPR deems the album “arguably his best yet”, and while we’re in no way dissing Kurt’s impressive oeuvre, we’re inclined to agree.

NEW CAT POWER THINGS (video, dates, tv)

Not too long ago, Chan Marshall & director Greg Hunt grabbed a flatbed and filmed the music video from one of ‘Sun”s many highlights, “Manhattan” . Watch the video below, or at catpowermusic.com. In it, Chan visits some of the haunts she’s been frequenting since the early stages of Cat Power, as well as some of the locales essential to her musical foundation. Whether or not they secured a MOFTB film permit, well, I’m in no position to answer that.

On tomorrow’s (Friday, 4/4) episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Cat Power backed by The Roots will take to the stage to perform a rendition of “Manhattan”. Early next week she’ll kick off the new season of Later… With Jools Holland with a live performance that we’ve heard will be extra-special.

That’s not it. We’re excited to share a slew of new Cat Power tour dates, taking the band through North & South America and across Europe. We’ll see you out!

Kurt Vile tour dates are selling out, but we have tickets

You’ve already listened to Kurt Vile’s new album on NPR, pre-ordered the deluxe 2LP (with stickers!) and perhaps you’re even planning a pilgrimage to visit the ESPO Kurt Vile mural in Philadelphia… but if you’re one of those folks in San Francisco or New York City who’ve tried to buy a ticket to Kurt’s upcoming live concerts, perhaps the words “sold out” have an all-too-familiar sting. For that, today, we have your salve.

If you’d like to win one of

a) Two pairs of tickets to the Independent show in San Francisco on May 8.
b) Two pairs of tickets to New York City show at Bowery Ballroom on May 16

Please click over to twitter and send us (@matadorrecords) and Kurt (@therealkurtvile) a message — we’ll pick two winners in each city at random by 5pm EST tonight.

For those of you in other cities, if you’d like to avoid a similar fate, do yourself a favor and get tickets now.

Majical Cloudz’ Devon Welsh explains of ‘Impersonator’

In the last few years there’s been a massive explosion of amazing music made with computers, samplers and other electronic equipment. The possibilities became nearly endless and musicians indulged those possibilities. I love that kind of music but it also started to overwhelm me. I wasn’t cut out for the maximalist expressions of that style. So I took a break from music, and when I started again it was to make music that barely existed and felt like stillness more than movement. Where the songs could be more about humanness. I love all forms of electronic music, techno, house, rave, hip-hop, but I never want to feel like
the music I’m making is just about stylistic play. The easiest way for me to do that is try to make something without obvious movement; where the music isn’t overstuffed sonically or referentially, it’s emptied out as much as possible. So the vision for Impersonator was to communicate a lot with as little as possible. It’s not meant to energize and turn you out to the world, it’s meant to do the opposite; it’s more like a cocoon.

‘Impersonator”s expressive power and swagger belie its extremely minimal music. These are intensely lyrical songs about death, patience, family, friendship, and desire, with Welsh’s rich vocals atop Matthew Otto Kolaitis’ quiet looped waves of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds.

The album is available for pre-order now on all formats at the Matador store & iTunes.

This Spring, Majical Cloudz will be touring with Youth Lagoon in North America & a few headlining dates in Europe.

Iceage NYC 1/25 – 26/13: A Short Film by Cali Thornhill Dewitt

You’ll remember earlier this year Iceage visited New York to play two shows and help present the ‘Thrown Together‘ gallery event, an art exhibition featuring some artworks from their friends local and global. Los Angeles-based artist/photographer/director/label boss Cali Thornhill Dewitt came along for the ride and produced a striking short film tracking the band’s activities that weekend in the city & shots of the visuals on display, set to live audio of “Morals” from ‘You’re Nothing‘  — you can watch this below or at Pitchfork.TV today.

Iceage are on tour right now and will be in the states at the end of the month. Pick up ‘You’re Nothing‘ at the Matador store or your favorite music retailler.

Iceage ‘You’re Nothing’ is out today

… and just like that, Iceage’s sophomore album, ‘You’re Nothing’ is available worldwide  in all modern-day conceptions of music retailler (Matador store, Insound, Amazon, iTunes & of course your local indie).   The New York Times have dropped some praise on the album’s “coiled contraptions, unruly by design” whereas Pitchfork, awarding their ‘Best New Music’ tag note Iceage coming off “even younger, wilder, and more chaotic than on their 2011 debut, but also more experienced and nuanced” & SPIN chimes in: “smarter, faster, catchier and noisier than their debut“”.

Grab a sneak peak of the album over at AbsolutePunk, where they’re streaming the album for a week.

Then, see Iceage on tour.  Oh yeah & buy the record, you’ll love it.

Welcome Majical Cloudz

For the past few years, Devon Welsh’s been recording solo material composed between rural Ontario and Montreal, and collaborating in production & performance with Matthew Otto under the guise Majical Cloudz. This spring, we at Matador have the distinct pleasure to bring his next full-length to record stores worldwide.

It’s been written of Majical Cloudz:  Their performance is deeply expressive — strong vocals sit on top of washes of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds. The songs are intensely lyrical, oriented around themes of death, patience, family and desire. The live show celebrates the joy in sadness and the value of a shared musical experience.

We’ll have more details on a full-length release set for this spring shortly, but we can tell you that you’ll be hearing this song on it. Download “Turns Turns Turns” (as previously heard on a 2012 Arbutus/Merok EP) HERE.

Watch Majical Cloudz perform the track live via Yours Truly.
