coming June 17: Lower ‘Seek Warmer Climes’, listen to “Lost Weight, Perfect Skin” now

Following releases on 540, Escho and Blind Prophet, Lower‘s debut album ‘Seek Warmer Climes‘, will see release June 17th on Matador Records (Escho in Denmark, Big Love in Japan). The record sparkles with the harmonic dissonance and high-strung urgency of their underground rock forebears, but Copenhagen’s Lower – Adrian Toubro (vocals), Simon Formann (guitar), Kristian Emdal (bass) and Anton Rothstein (drums) – also channel the romance and drama of great singer-songwriters, from late-period Scott Walker to Bryan Ferry. The result is a hugely ambitious and affecting rock album that enters deeply personal and unusual sonic and topical spaces.

You don’t have to dig deep to hear how far Lower’s music sits from the traditional concerns of modern rock music. Toubro’s lyrics are finely wrought emotional dramas that, in their poetic construction and raw honesty of delivery. “Every song on the record deals in some way with personal development, be it emotional or cosmetic,” says Toubro. “How to act in different social contexts, and to acclimatize oneself into a given situation without losing face.”

Listen to Majical Cloudz’ “Savage”

Composed around the same time that Devon Welsh wrote Impersonator, “Savage” has been an integral part of Majical Cloudz’ live show for quite some time.

In regards to “Savage”, Devon Welsh of Majical Cloudz notes “I think it’s important to explain a song a little bit, but not too much. The song is written about a specific set of circumstances and experiences, and Matt and I did such-and-such when we recorded it, but ultimately what the song is ‘about’ is less important than how and why it is meaningful for you when you listen to it. Explaining too much about the details of the song is not the point, so I won’t. “Savage” is about a friendship, it’s mysteries and it’s moments of excitement, and the way drugs played into all of it. It’s about letting go of a relationship as it changes and the emotions that go along with that.”

“Savage” is the first new material the duo has released following the release of Impersonator earlier this year.

DARKSIDE’s debut album ‘Psychic’ is out 10/8 via Other People & Matador

We’re very proud to announce our collaborative release of DARKSIDE‘s debut album ‘Psychic‘ on October 8th via Other People and Matador Records.

DARKSIDE is comprised of electronic producer Nicolas Jaar and guitarist Dave Harrington. They formed the band in 2011 after touring together for several years and experimenting with each others’ sounds. Drawing on their vastly different backgrounds, each musician channels himself through the other, resulting in a progressive hybrid of electronic music and psychedelic rock with an otherworldly depth.

Listen to “Golden Arrow”

download “Golden Arrow” mp3

Psychic‘ is a ritualistic song cycle, exploring rock’s cosmic outer edges through the immersive, body-moving framework of 21st-century house and techno. It follows the band’s acclaimed 2011 ‘DARKSIDE’ EP, as well as their full-album remix of Daft Punk’s ‘Random Access Memories’.

The band unveiled ‘Psychic‘ on August 20th, at a last-minute event on the Lower East Side, attracting lines around the block and forcing a second listening to accommodate the crowd. A writer for Pretty Much Amazing wrote, “Feeling fully submerged in what felt like equal parts evening meditation and the best house party ever, it was hard to believe it was only an hour-long event. The first session’s listeners left in peace and with gratitude for the experience and a longing for the release date. Just like that, Darkside made their stamp on this summer.”

As King Krule, 18 year old south-east London based singer/producer/songwriter Archy Marshall has quietly and stealthily crafted a reputation for himself as one of the most raw and startling voices of a new generation. With his unexpectedly deep and mournful baritone tracing fissures of disappointment and social disorientation to devastating effect, Marshall has harnessed the inchoate frustration and fury of youth and translated it into a series of brilliant singles released on the likes of True Panther Sounds and Rinse over the past few years.

Now comes 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, his first full-length on True Panther Sounds, and with it, the much anticipated unveiling of the full scope and scale of Marshall’s vision. Over the course of 14 tracks, Marshall’s passions and confusions are rubbed raw and laid bare, the only connective tissue throughout it all being one of searing lyrical clarity paired with a confounding musical deftness which utterly belies his tender years. From the opening clarion call of “Easy, Easy” it is abundantly clear that this is a breathtakingly bold and arresting sonic worldview, as his songs, produced by Marshall along with Rodaidh McDonald (The XX, Savages), open up to become a loose knit meditation on regret and discontent, loss of faith and renewal of hope, and optimism in the face of desperation.

Eschewing much of his previously released material, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon firmly yet soundly rejects any notion of contemporary trends or peers to occupy its very own unique place on the music landscape, oscillating gently between the classic 50′s soul of Gene Vincent and Elvis Presley to the minimal, avant-garde experimentation of Penguin Café Orchestra, to even the electronic smog and dub textures of Marshall’s beloved Rinse FM. This is a record where the nakedly bluesy stomp of the likes of “A Lizard State” and “Easy, Easy” sit effortlessly next to the low-end frequency and shimmering beats of “Neptune Estate” and “Will I Come,” after all. It is reflective as much of Marshall’s own eclectic tastes as it is of the frenetic pulse and rhythm of the city around him, particularly the rapidly changing south-east areas in which he grew up. There is a genuine grittiness and world weariness ingrained here, as exemplified so succinctly when Marshall sings, “Hate…runs through my blood” on the stunning “Out Getting Ribs,” the track which started all the fuss.

All these esoteric textures and fidgety, off-kilter rhythms make perfect sense as an album however, especially when you consider that incredible voice. Whether he is singing ruefully of youthful disaffection and “the heat of my own treason” (“Ceiling”) or spitting out venomous lines like “I’m not going to crack like you cracked…I don’t want to be trapped in the black of your heart” over the jittery “A Lizard State,” its clear that something which marks Marshall out is his stunning ability to turn intense emotional peaks and troughs into spectacular pieces of artful, atmospheric and anthemic balladeering.

Some of the imagery is disturbing to be sure (as on the closer “Bathed in Grey” where he offhandedly murmurs that he “there was blood…found a body in the dark”) but the songs are also imbued with genuine heart as well, as epitomised on his heart rending update of “Out Getting Ribs.” Taken as a whole, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon is the sound of a young man growing up – not for nothing is this album being released, unconventionally enough, on a Saturday, which also marks Marshall’s 19th birthday – and attempting to grapple with the realities of the world he inhabits, an unsparing dissection of the social decay that has begun to set in around him – and a fascinating, brutal journey it is too.

The Majical Cloudz video for “Bugs Don’t Buzz” is here

Directed by Gordon Von Steiner & premiered this morning on NPR First Watch, here’s the video for “Bugs Don’t Buzz” from Majical Cloudz’ Impersonator. The video was initially conceived by Devon Welsh, who “wanted the video to be abstract and not narrative-based.” Welsh noted that “the rest of the imagery followed from the original concept of trying to remove humanity from the video’s frame of reference”, resulting in what he hopes “paints a picture that is abstract but clear in its emotional intentions.”

Watch it now.

Later today, Majical Cloudz will participate in a live chat this evening (8pm EDT) with Soundrop. Be sure to visit the Majical Cloudz chat on Soundrop tonight to talk about this video, and really, anything else on your mind.
