Coming May 5 – Savages: Fuckers / Dream Baby Dream 12″

Can you believe it’s nearly a year since the release of Silence Yourself?  In that time I moved house, reached an age milestone and got a dog.  Not to mention changing my hair colour three times and going on a juice cleanse.  Pretty sure some sorta midlife crisis thing is going on, especially as I’m sharing all this on the www right now.

To mark their milestone of one year since the release of their debut album, Savages are releasing a 12″ of two new tracks.  Recorded live at the London Forum show on November 6, 2013 – exactly halfway through the band’s year – the record captures the full sonic intensity of Savages live performance on the 10-minute-plus ‘Fuckers’, the live set’s notorious closer; as well as their more mesmeric side on a sinuous cover of Suicide’s timeless ‘Dream Baby Dream’.

‘Fuckers / Dream Baby Dream’ is out May 5/6 dependent on what side of the ocean you’re on.  12″ vinyl and Digital Download.

You can preorder the 12″ from the following:

Matador Direct
Rough Trade
Or if you’re digitally minded, iTunes

The release will coincide with two Savages-curated Pop Noire nights in east London, the first at The Shacklewell Arms on ‘Fuckers’ release day (May 5th), and the second at Birthdays on the anniversary of the ‘Silence Yourself’ album (May 6th).

Here is the line-up so far, with more artists to be confirmed:

5th May @ Shacklewell Arms (£6 entry)

ZZZs (Japan)

A Dead Forest Index

Bashan (Gemma Thompson – Savages)

+ Savages DJ set

6th May @ Birthdays (free entry)

Johnny Hostile & Jehnny Beth (Live DJ set)

Le Vasco (France)

+ support (tbc)

+ Romy xx (DJ set)

Check for all details.

Starting tomorrow Yo La Tengo hit the beach in Australia and New Zealand for 5 shows. Whether or not these actually take place on a beach remains to be seen, but as I write in the drizzle of London, I can only imagine that Australia is all shorts, surfboards and beaches. You guys are so lucky.

Savages – “Strife” – New Video

Today Savages release the new video for the track Strife taken from their debut album Silence Yourself.

Some words from Savages:

“We wanted to make a video that focused on a timeless human physicality and physical expression, a search for understanding through the movement, action and reaction of two characters. We chose the classical landscape of the empty beach.  A fight ensues between two men: one older, one younger; a tragic outcome, and death.

French director Antoine Carlier – co-founder of Pop Noire records with Jehnny Beth, who previously collaborated with the band on their artwork – filmed the scene with a modern black & white aesthetic on the beaches of Gironde in South-West France. The film is a play on human instincts and desire for survival, echoing the famous beach murder scene in the novel ‘The Stranger’ by Albert Camus.

Either a tale from the past or science-fiction, this is an endless story of human struggle. We see the fragmentation between two generations, a subject of predilection for Savages (ref: ‘I Am Here’ manifesto), where the ‘young, intelligent and radical people’ live in servitude to established elders.”

Directed by Antoine Carlier
Produced by Walter Films and Savages
Actors: Leo Pochat and Richard Duval

Help The New Pornographers’ Kathryn Calder Fund Documentary

Friend of the family, Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers, needs your help!

A Matter Of Time – An ALS Documentary

Imagine finding out your mother has 2-3 years left to live. Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers was faced with this gut-wrenching revelation when she learned that her mother had been diagnosed with ALS, taking her down a path few could endure.

ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in the US and Motor Neurone disease in the UK) is a fatal disease, which attacks the neurons in the brain and spinal cord, progressively impairing one’s ability to walk, talk or feed themselves. The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.

Before the bad news hit, Kathryn was relishing in a beautiful adventure. A few years prior, her mother, who was adopted, had found her birth mother, and thus a whole other family for Kathryn. Relatives emerged, loved ones multiplied overnight. And all the more spectacular, her new found long lost uncle, Carl Newman, happened to be the front-man behind an indie rock super group called The New Pornographers. With this serendipitous revelation, a new realm of musical collaboration and opportunity spawned and prospered. Then the news about her mother’s illness crashed right through the newly lit family home.

As a result, Kathryn decided to move back into her childhood home to become her mother’s full time caregiver. It was during this turbulent period, that Kathryn became inspired to write and record her first solo album; a parting gift for her biggest fan. She recruited a producer and converted her mother’s living room into a recording studio. As her mother’s condition steadily worsened, Kathryn’s challenge became clear: she needed to complete the album in time for her mother to hear it.

A Matter of Time illustrates the bravery and compassion that can bloom from struggle. How even the most enduring battles can conjure unimaginable feats of strength and triumph against unexplainable forces. This is an inspirational story about courage in the face of disease. It’s about letting difficult experiences meet artistic impulses and making a positive difference through music.

If you would like to help Kathryn finish the film and make the documentary a reality, please head over to her Kickstarter page and donate.  You’ll even get a special gift ranging from a download of the soundtrack (featuring The New Pornographers), a meet and greet with The New P’s at a concert, OR even a personalised song written by Kathryn.  All this dependent on how generous you can be, so dig deep.
