Yo La Tengo – ‘Murder In The Second Degree’ CD’s Now Available (From Them, Not Us)

YLT2-high-res-for-SD-300-1

The long-awaited sequel to ‘Yo La Tengo Is Murdering The Classics’ is finally available. From Yo La Tengo.com :

We’re Back, Back in the New York Groove

We can think of no more apt a headline for this second edition of “highlights” of our annual appearance on WFMU. Admittedly, the station resides in Jersey City, not New York, and among the many beats deployed within, all fall safely outside of the category of “groove.” Yet apt is apt. You better believe it.

So impressive is Adrian Tomine‘s cover art that it is entirely possible that you, the prospective purchaser, are unfamiliar with what will unfold for the next 76 minutes should you be so rash as to part with your hard-earned money. For the last 20 years (and counting), Yo La Tengo, accompanied by cub reporter Bruce Bennett, have performed live on WFMU during their fundraising Marathon, and in return for listeners’ pledges of support, we have attempted to play their requests, with no prior knowledge of what those requests will be, and without utilizing any of the many web sites that provide lyrics and chords. We rely instead on a lifetime of listening and the forgiveness of our audience.

As with this volume’s predecessor, we will not tell you what songs are essayed. A track listing that includes, say, “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Rock and Roll Love Letter” and “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” (one of which is here; the other two have never been requested) will all but demand imagining how it might sound, and you will be wrong. As listeners familiar with Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics already know, but you will learn the hard way: There are endless ways to ruin a song.

And let’s all raise a glass of something non-alcoholic to WFMU’s Gaylord Fields, who has either hosted or co-hosted us for all 20 (and counting) years.

We compiled Murder in the 2nd Degree years ago. Would it have made sense to tweak the contents, and add some more recent material? Undoubtedly. But that would require us to listen back to more of these performances. And as Half Japanese put it so aptly on “No More Beatlemania” (not included): “Once is enough.”

Kim Gordon – “Murdered Out”

“Murdered Out”

Earlier this morning, NPR Music premiered “Murdered Out”, the first single by Kim Gordon issued under her own name, recorded with producer Justin Raisen and Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa. The following are Kim’s words on the subject :

Black matte spray.

When I moved back to LA I noticed more and more cars painted with black matte spray, tinted windows, blackened logos, and black wheels. This was something I had occasionally seen in the past, part of low-rider car culture. A reclaiming of a corporate symbol of American success, The Car, from an outsider’s point of view. A statement-making rejection of the shiny brand new look, the idea of a new start, the promise of power, and the freedom on the open road. Like an option on a voting ballot, “none of the above.”

“Murdered Out,” as a look, is now creeping into mainstream culture as a design trend. A coffee brand. A clothing line. A nail polish color.

Black-on-black matte is the ultimate expression in digging out, getting rid of, purging the soul. Like a black hole, the supreme inward look, a culture collapsing in on itself, the outsider as an unwilling participant as the “It” look.

###

I met the uber talented Justin Raisen, the producer, offhandedly. He was working on a project with another artist and kept sending me tracks to listen to with the possibility of getting me to sing on one of them. When I learned I could make up my own lyrics, I was in. With the remaining bits of unused vocals, he started what would be “Murdered Out.” Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) plays drums, based on the trashy drums that Justin first laid down. I went back and did more vocals and guitar and we mixed it…”Murdered Out” was such a great surprise! Looking forward to our next collaboration.

Self Congratulation Corner : Happy 10th Anniversary, Matablog!

Ten years ago when Matador founder Chris Lombardi suggested we commence publishing a label blog, skeptics sneered. Wasn’t this a bit like introducing color television in 1980? Or writing about a vinyl revival in 2015? I mean, just what are we doing around here, running a record label or LiveJournaling ourselves to death?

Fast forward a decade later and the answer is clear as day : we’re running a record label AND LiveJournaling ourselves to death. Next Tuesday marks the Matablog’s 10th Anniversary, an incredible achievement considering the blog medium is deader than Dennis Miller’s career and there’s simply no way we should’ve been allowed to get away with calling it “Matablog” for ten minutes, let alone ten years.

Savages and Car Seat Headrest at Pitchfork Festival This Weekend

Chicago-Open-Air-2016-Lineup-Poster-2

(above – not a poster for the Pitchfork Festival)

Just a reminder for those attending this weekend’s Pitchfork Festival in Chicago’s Union Park that Savages are playing on the Green Stage Saturday at 4:15pm, while Car Seat Headrest are making their (domestic) P4K fest debut on the Red Stage Friday afternoon at 3:30pm. In addition, Car Seat Headrest are at the Empty Bottle Saturday night at midnight and while advance tickets are sold out, a limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

If the above events aren’t to your liking, Disturbed, Korn, Breaking Benjamin, Drowning Pool, Asking Alexandria and some version of Page Hamilton’s Helmet are taking part in a craft beer exposition in Bridgeview, IL this weekend. I’m told tickets are very much available (which is probably a familiar refrain whenever Drowning Pool are playing), so use that information as you see fit.

denialreleaseday

At the risk of being overly dramatic, our national nightmare of moderate length is finally over and the amended LP and CD versions of Car Seat Headrest’s hotly anticipated / universally hailed ‘Teens Of Denial’ are either hitting your local record shop or your mailbox today (and if it’s the latter, I certainly hope you ordered the CD, otherwise there could be some real problems cramming the LP inside). After taking Europe (or what’s left of it) by storm, Car Seat Headrest kick off the next leg of North American touring with a free show tomorrow on Pier 16 of NYC’s South Street Seaport as part of the Village Voice’s 4 Knots Festival. Also appearing are Protomartyr and fledgling young hopefuls Guided By Voices (of whom we’ve heard promising things, apparently the main fella is considered somewhat prolific, you might even say ‘Toledo-esque’) and if you get there early enough, I’ll be conducting a walking tour of the block former Matador receptionist Joe Gaer used to live on. The show is all-ages, though the walking tour not recommended for preteens or the emotionally immature.

Tonight At Bowery Ballroom : Yo La Tengo in Salute To Other Music

13450894_1566787810291461_4699389555984515570_n
As you’ve probably read elsewhere, West 4th Street’s much beloved Other Music closed this past weekend after two decades of passionate curation/musical evangelism. Others have done far better than I in eulogizing this store and what it brought to New York City (and beyond) but suffice to say OM played an outsized role in the trajectory of more than a few Matador artists (see above). Consider this a belated thanks to Other Music’s staff, ownership and patrons for their respective roles in making the planet a more interesting place.

49-elg

Tonight at Bowery Ballroom, Yo La Tengo — no strangers to Other Music — are participating in Other Music Forever, alongside Julianna Barwick, Bill Callahan, Frankie Cosmos, Helado Negro, Menahan Street Band, Psychic Ills, Matana Roberts, The Tallest Man On Earth, Sharon Van Etten, and John Zorn’s SIMULACRUM. Tickets are sold out, however there’s still some action on Stubhub as of this writing.

Lucy Dacus Signs To Matador ; ‘No Burden’ Available Now (And Later)

Videography by Joseph McCormick and Henry Sho Kellam

lucydacus-dcondren-selects-30-hi copy

“An uncommonly warm indie rock record. Lead guitar lines pour in like slow columns of sunlight, and Dacus’ voice itself is a comforting blur.” – Brad Nelson, Pitchfork

“Hyper-aware missives from a friend whose mind is always whirling —-disarmingly open indie rock songs, with plainspoken lyrics that hit even harder thanks to her soft, sturdy alto.” – Maura Johnson, Rolling Stone

“Her songs roll over you like waves, the matter-of-fact, plaintive delivery serving as a vessel for examining where things all went wrong and how to make them right again.” – James Rettig, Stereogum

“A brave lyricist whose sensual expression of catharsis will stay with you long after you’ve finished with this record… an amazing breath of fresh air in an otherwise overwrought genre.” – Annalise Domenighini, Noisey

We’re very pleased to announce the signing of Richmond, VA singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus to Matador. Lucy’s debut album, the Collin Pastore produced ‘No Burden’, released earlier this year by Egg Hunt, is now available digitally via Matador and all the download and streaming services you’d expect ; a re-release of ‘No Burden’ on LP and compact disc will be in stores September 9 with preorders available starting today.

OLE-1115_Lucy_Dacus copy

Recorded in Nashville last autumn with guitarist/bandmate Jacob Blizard, ‘No Burden’ is as arresting, direct and quick-witted as any debut we’ve stumbled across ; that the 21 year-old Dacus’ poetic chops are more than matched by a killer vocal performance (and later down the line, by a ridiculously locked-in live band) has just a bit to do with why ‘No Burden’ blasted thru it’s first pressing in the blink of an eye. After a ton of US touring in 2016 including dates in support of Houndmouth, Kurt Vile and Julien Baker, Lucy hits the road again this summer and fall, including July dates opening for The Decemberists, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits appearances, a UK debut at the End Of The Road Festival and September shows in support of Car Seat Headrest (see below) :

OLE10911-carseatheadrest-teensofdenial-mockups-02

You’ve all heard the tragic tale of how the LP/CD release of Car Seat Headrest’s eagerly awaited ‘Teens Of Denial’ has been delayed for reasons we’re kinda tired of repeating. Now, we’re happy to announce that the light at the end of the tunnel is not an oncoming train, but rather, a large truck carrying 2XLP and digipak CD copies of ‘Teens Of Denial’ that will only be destroyed if you opt to do it yourself with your bare hands. And we’re very confident you won’t want to do any such thing. FRIDAY JULY 8 is the day said light/truck/boxes will emerge from the darkness.
