Savages – “I Am Here” Pitchfork live session

Today Pitchfork released a live performance session from Savages featuring the Silence Yourself jam “I Am Here”. The piece was inspired by Alvin Lucier’s “I Am Sitting In A Room”:

Savages on the piece:

It was very much an experiment. This process had never been tried with a song before so we had no idea what to expect. We divided the process in two days: one for recording the band, one for recording the room the next day. Gemma Thompson and Johnny Hostile (who co-produced the Savages first album) sat in the basement all afternoon while the song was being played and recorded in the room 10 times in total, witnessing the slow disintegration of the song until it became really abstract, each instruments merging into the cacophony of this new orchestral autonomous ensemble.

Director Joshua Zucker-Pluda:

There’s a real emotional intensity to Savages’ live presence. I was interested in the idea that the band’s performance could be so powerful that it would leave a kind of psychic scar or echo within the performance space. That the sound could become interwoven into the physical structure and sort of “haunt” the building.

The process behind Lucier’s “I am sitting in a room” seemed to be an appropriate way to illustrate this concept. We used the band’s performance to reveal the hidden resonant frequencies of the performance space. The process itself is a direct interaction with the environment, and it felt almost like an invocation or ritual– like we were summoning the sound from deep within the walls.

The above statements were cribbed from a Pitchfork article in which you can also check out two audio “decay” versions of the track. Very cool indeed.

Majical Cloudz announce tour, Take Away Show debuts

The debut LP from Majical Cloudz, Impersonator, is out now and finding its way into the hands and hearts of so many new fans.

Still, the group’s in-person power (and especially singer Devon Welsh’s uncanny voice and presence) can hardly be replicated – unless you’re the talented group at La Blogotheque, who specialize in powerful replication. This is something else, man:

But limit yourself not to excellent internet-based musical diversions. Get diverted in person. Majical Cloudz have just announced US and European dates:

Kurt Vile – concert webcast on Pitchfork TUESDAY 3PM

This Tuesday, when you’ll finally have your hot little hands on Kurt’s new opus Wakin On A Pretty Daze (warm those puppies up with a pre-order), Pitchfork will stream a live, full-length concert by Kurt and The Violators from their Brooklyn offices, replete with special set-design by Espo, the legendary artist behind Wakin‘s album cover.

3PM EDT on STREET DATE at Pitchfork. Do not miss it!

Kurt Vile – “Never Run Away” debuts on the CW in Philly

Our advertising ninja Blake Thomas forgot to tell any of us (perhaps his mind was elsewhere) but last night Kurt debuted the single version of “Never Run Away” (from the upcoming album Wakin On A Pretty Daze, out April 9) with the cutest little infomercial EVER – it aired on the CW network in Philadelphia. Blake kicked us the file for optimum viewing, but we’ve also got a rip of the infomercial itself which a Kurt superfan (OK, Philebrity) passed our way:

You can download “Never Run Away (Single Version)” here.

Matador at the Movies (on the internet)

This week two of my personal favorites from Matador’s long-to-quite-long history (the band Silkworm and Belle & Sebastian’s If You’re Feeling Sinister album) are being celebrated on the silver-y looking screen sitting on my desk at work.

First, the long-in-the-works Silkworm documentary “Couldn’t You Wait? The Story Of Silkworm” by filmmaker Seth Pomeroy is finally completed and available for stream and purchase here. I will take this opportunity to tell you how important this band has been to me: Silkworm has been incredibly important to me, and will always rule.

Second, Pitchfork has debuted an amazing entry in their Classic (as in classic albums) documentary series about If You’re Feeling Sinister, an album I can’t really talk about here…it’s too personal, I’m sorry. I just cant.

Hullabaloos, detonations, Chelsea Light Moving and Brooklyn Vegan

From the weird/cool/whoa file: on Tuesday Brooklyn Vegan correctly pointed out that, in the bio for Chelsea Light Moving’s upcoming album, Thurston Moore threatens that “the band is ready to detonate any birthday party, wedding or hullabaloo in any country, planet or stratosphere that doesn’t support right wing extremist NRA sucking bozo-ology.”

In a moment that may go down in trolling history, the comments section went ablaze with suggestions for venues, houses and parties Thurston and the band could play. Late Tuesday Thurston himself took the comments section at BV (twice!) to state that the band is indeed up to detonate some poor sap’s shebang.

Today Brooklyn Vegan returned to the story, imploring their readers for more suggestions for Thurston and CLM. So, um, I guess this is happening (really? WTF) – visit Brooklyn Vegan and make your pitch!
