True Panther SXSW Showdown

We here are True Panther are pretty damn excited and honored to announce this year’s True Panther showcase for SXSW. No official stuff or badges or RSVP’s, just good music free and open to the public for more hours than one would think is humanly possible. There are two stages so break times will be short and a dj after the live shows are over. The line-up is bands we’ve done records with, bands we are doing records with, or bands we’re just plain big fans of.

Here is a static flyer in case you are seizure prone: FLYER

Girls Add S. California Dates

Girls just added a couple of Southern California dates to their already epic tour itinerary (currently galavanting around Europe, followed immediately by criss-crossing the USA). To reflect Southern California vibrations the bands are traveling solely by surfboard and are being limited to a strict diet of Pollo Loco tacos. Sorry guys but we run a tight ship around here and no one said “making it” in the biz is EASY.

Girls’ “Album” out Sept. 22, Rejoice!

We are proud to announce the September 22 release of the debut full-length from Girls, entitled Album. The record will be released by True Panther Sounds, the label that released Girls’ debut 7″, “Lust For Life,” last year, in conjunction with Matador.

Built on the powerful songwriting of Christopher Owens and the ethereal production of Chet “JR” White, Girls recorded Album in a variety of bedrooms and rehearsal studios in their adopted hometown, San Francisco. The resulting 12 tracks are the perfect San Francisco summer record, evoking a narcotic, sunny afternoon in Dolores Park, yet promising the eventual hangover of summer’s departure. Album is a redemptive song-cycle about the various characters and desires that color Christopher Owens’s life. Described by the band as “honest, loose, ethereal, obnoxious and perfect,” it is a sincere tribute to the majesty of great pop music and the healing power of rock and roll.

Album’s seven-minute opus, “Hellhole Ratrace,” rated by Pitchfork as “one of the 100 best songs of the year,” will be available prior to the album‘s release date on a limited-edition 10″ vinyl single.

The video for “Hellhole Ratrace,” directed by Aaron Brown, can be seen here

Do They Know It’s Record Store Day? (redux)

Discos Exitos
Some of you may remember last year’s excursion to the outer reaches of Record Store Day, so this year I decided to give another outer-burrough a shot at Record Store Day. After stopping by Other Music and the Academy Annex , picking up some amazing limited edition records (and failing to find the new Fresh & Onlys LP) I hopped on the subway deep into Queens in search of NYC’s best cumbia, champeta, rebajada and technocumbia shops.

We got off at the Junction Blvd. stop to find that the most-recommended music spot in the neighborhood, Discos Medellin, has been order closed by Police Order! Do the police know it’s Record store Day???

Discos Medellinpoliceorder
Anyhow, after some deeply remedial Spanish conversations, we found a few other great stores right off on Roosevelt- Pancoatl Bulmaro and Domingo records. Pancoatl was up a secret flight of stairs in the back of a barber shop and blasted the latest Mexico-via-Queens Sonidero mixes. The employees were incredibly friendly, and excited to share their favorite new CDs (no vinyl sadly) and talk about their favorite local Sonideros (dj’s).  They got excited about Record Store Day, and talked a little bit about how they felt their stores were crucial hubs for people to feel connected to their home countries. Good vibes! After picking up some new Ecuadorian, Colombian and Mexican music we finished off the day with tacos at Tacos Al Suadero, easily the best Mexican food I’ve had since leaving San Francisco.

Dave’s Record Corner

Unbeknownst to some of you, we sometimes distribute records for non-Matador labels here at Matador Direct. That means that Dave, our co-head of sales at Matador Direct, cherry-picks his favorite records and gets them out to stores. This often means that some really rare, amazing vinyl comes through our doors that mailorder customers don’t get a chance to pick up. Those dark days are over!

We just launched a new section of the store for Dave to pick his favorite distributed items to make available for mailorder. Most of these are limited edition so we’ll be adding and deleting items as they appear and disappear from our stock. Right now, we have the first two releases from the new Captured Tracks imprint (run by Mike Sniper of Blank Dogs), an incredible African music reissue, the Nodzzz LP, No Bunny, and a rare Rob’s House 7″/DVD set. Get them while you can.

Cat Power Vinyl Back in Stock

Just a quick note that after a little bit of a delay at the pressing plant, we now have Moon Pix, The Greatest, and You Are Free back in stock on wonderful, black vinyl. Now you can complete a couple of pieces you were missing from your collection, or maybe just discover a couple extra gems. Jukebox is still available as well.

On the subject of vinyl, now might be a good time to pick up one of our Matador Record Bags. Buy a Cat Power (or any other record), a record bag, and get free domestic shipping. Just write “lovevinyl” in the promotion bar during checkout.

Bag ‘Em Up

Carry your Matador records around town with fear of dog-earing NO LONGER. We’ve done a lot of vinyl specials recently so now we’re doing a special vinyl container deal.

The bags are size large Dickies record bags with front clip and flap closure, inner and outer pockets and organizers, top handle and adjustable strap. Featuring a high quality embroidery of the Matador logo. They come in black, powder blue, and steel blue.

If you order one of our new, really awesome record bags, plus a piece of vinyl from the store you get free shipping anywhere in the US or Canda. Just enter “lovevinyl” in the promo code line during checkout and you’ll be good to go.

We know a lot of you weren’t able to successfully assemble the full set, but now you have one more chance. Enter our Jay Reatard 7″ contest to get the whole series AND a signed copy of the Jay Reatard/Beck split 7″. This time, no infuriating checkout debacles or delayed shipping. NPR Loves Jennifer

The day is almost done. ALMOST. There’s still time for you to learn that NPR picked our very own Jennifer O’Connor’s “Here With Me” for their song of the day today. See it HERE and listen as you do whatever it is that you do to count out this monday.

“Here With Me” is a song to build a mix tape around. Flawlessly constructed from bare acoustic riffs and crisp beats, the track lets O’Connor’s half-plaintive, half-expectant vocals tell a universal story of desire and hope.”

Nice! We still have a couple of signed LP Jackets available as a free gift for pre-ordering Jennifer’s new album Here With Me, which will hit the streets August 19th!

We have even fewer copies of this 7″ than we had of the last one so we’re taking these extra steps to ensure that everyone gets a fair shake at getting a copy. That means less server lock-up, no waiting in the checkout line, and (hopefully) less confusion in general. Good luck!
