Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks – new album “Wig Out at Jagbags” streaming now at Amazon

By Gabe on Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

Happy impending hangover everyone. We hope you’ve successfully escaped your family. I wrote this two weeks ago so pray for me to be free by now also, retrospectively.

We are very stoked, with the help of Amazon, to bring you the new album from Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, Wig Out at Jagbags, streaming in it’s entirety. The album is available to pre-order on LP and CD.

The record is truly fantastic: vintage Malkmusian guitar-flogging and melodic-wizardy, good for a listen on your comeups and comedowns. See you in the field.

Singles Going Home Alone Update : Last Chance For the 2013 Edition

By Gerard on Monday, December 23rd, 2013

In the wake of singles from Jeffrey Novak, Superchunk, Cian Nugent, Lower Plenty, Bits Of Shit, Royal Headache, Outer Spaces, Smartboys and Tony Molina, the final 3 7″‘s of the 2013 ‘Singles Going Home Alone’ series are shipping to subscribers shortly ;

Sleaford Mods – “Routine Dean” b/w “Pubic Hair Ltd”

Steve Gunn – “WIldwood” b/w “Worn Threads”

Coho Lips - “Less Of Everything” b/w “Lick Your Sore Chops”

The 13th / bonus single is in production and the band’s identity will revealed shortly. If you’re looking for a hint, they hail from the same region as the adopted home of last year’s bonus artist and have several records (old and not-so-old) in the Matador catalog. If that’s not setting it up for you on a tee, I don’t know what is.

There’s a handful of subscriptions still available at The Matador Store. SGHA is taking a year (decade?) off in 2014 while we fantasize about pressing plant capacity magically tripling.

Cat Power : Covering Hugh Martin’s “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” In The New Apple Commercial

By Gerard on Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

OK, Judy Garland’s version is the best known….at least until this week. Let this be a cautionary tale for anyone quick to scold a sulky teen for fucking around on the smartphone all Christmas. You could be interrupting the next Abel Ferrara!

Devon Welsh writes about the song on the video on his tumblr HERE

Our Annual Orgy of Self-Congratulation, Grandstanding & Overconsumption : Matador Artists & Staff Select Their 2013 Favorites

By Gerard on Friday, December 13th, 2013

(close personal friend of the Matador family, Ryan Seacrest salutes Dick Diver on their strong showing in the 2013 staff and artists poll)

Around this time every year, your underappreciated good-looking editor attempts to coax a list of favorite recordings, books, television programs, life events, etc. out of the label’s artist roster and our rock biz colleagues. In the past, the exercise has been an arduous process, fraught with nagging, teeth-gnashing and no shortage of reluctant participants. In more recent times, however, people can’t wait to tell you everything. Too much, in fact. For some historical perspective, here’s last year’s selections. Questions or comments about our predictable tastes and/or inexcuseable omissions are welcome (but not necessarily appreciated). Bombs away! (full lists after the jump)

Yo La Tengo – 4 Bell House Shows This Weekend, Tickets Just Released

By Gerard on Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

Wits : Game Show (“I Wast Into Their Earlier Stuff”), with Paul F. Tompkins and Yo La Tengo. (video courtesy American Public Media)

Have you ever noticed that sometimes after an enormodome show has long been sold out, at the very last minute, the promoter release a small quantity of premium tickets after it’s been determined, for instance, that Passion Pit don’t need an orchestra pit, or Porno For Pyros are forbidden from using pyro (and in some municipalities, the porno’s off the table, too). Well, in a scenario that has almost nothing to do with the above examples, the Bell House have made a tiny quantity of tickets available this morning for Yo La Tengo‘s 4 (otherwise) sold out shows happening Friday December 13-Monday December 16.

If the elbow-throwing, steel-toed boot climate surrounding the Bell House’s merch booth is not to your liking, we’d like to remind you that Album Of The Year candidate ‘Fade’ is available from the Matador store in a variety of formats, including the recently released double CD version including the ‘Fade Out’, 72 minute bonus disc. There’s also the “Super Kiwi” 7″ and the “Ohm” triple 12″ shower-curtain pack, so if you know anyone who claims this time of year is all about manipulating consumer anxiety, be sure to put in a good word for us.

Coming Spring 2014 : EMA’s ‘The Future’s Void’ (LP/CD/digital album)

By Gerard on Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

(photo : Erika M. Anderson)

In early 2014, Matador will be releasing the 2nd album from Portland-based EMA, ‘The Future’s Void’, the followup to 2011′s widely acclaimed ‘Past Life Martyred Saints’ (Souterrain Transmissions) (*- City Slang will be releasing ‘The Future’s Void’ in Europe). The first publicly available track from the new album, “Satellites”, is available today via iTunes.

“Satellites” hints at a further emboldened Erika M. Anderson, without forgoing the industrial-noise sound and glorious fuzz of her solo debut and previous work with Gowns. Crucially, she still maintains the visceral songwriting and a DIY recording ethos unique to herself (aided once again by Leif Shackelford on production duties). Opening with a wall of hiss, scree and galloping piano motif, ‘Satellites’ bursts into a flame of feedback and bass to provide one her best tracks to date.

The track also introduces us to some of the new album’s metaphysical themes, of struggling to understand where we fit in the digital age and where we are all headed. ‘Satellites’ explores the places where everyone has equal access, but is also under constant surveillance; “We fought the wars with information. Outer space seems very cold.”

With ‘Satellites’, EMA continues to evoke a distinctive sonic signature that saw her rightfully recognised as one of the most singular artists to emerge in 2011, and is likely to see her bound into the public consciousness once again in 2014.

Yo La Tengo: listen again to their BBC 6music session

By Stuart on Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

Yo La Tengo – posing for their Press Pop photo shoot

Given that James, Georgia and Ira have been on tour for pretty much the entire year since Fade was released back in January, you’d think we might have let up on twisting their arm for promotional opportunities, but with the promise of a good meal after, we persuaded them to record a BBC 6music session for Marc Riley last night.  Playing Ohm around the 46 minute mark, they followed with some chat and two more songs, with renditions of Paddle Forward and I’ll Be Around from the 1:16 mark – listen to all of those here.

Gideon Coe’s 6music show followed where the band had pre-recorded Is The Point Of It, also online now.  Currently on their way back to the US, their final shows of the year take place at The Bell House and are all sold-out.
