Fucked Up comes alive on WNYC Soundcheck today

By Hector on Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Fucked Up’s whirlwind two days in New York commenced last night with a jaw-dropping performance of David Comes To Life at Le Poisson Rouge, and concludes with a reenactment of the very same album tonight at Warsaw. Sandwiched in-between is today’s live radio session on WNYC Soundcheck, which is sure to be required listening for both the unfortunates who didn’t get tickets for one of the shows AND the lucky ones who did. The show starts at 2:00PM EST and can be heard in NYC at 93.9FM or online at

Kurt Vile – new live dates, video, interview and Rough Trade’s albums of the year

By Stuart on Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Posted yesterday on the La Blogothèque website was the ‘Take Away Show’ they filmed with Kurt and the Violators back in May.  They take to the streets of Paris to run through stripped-back version “Baby’s Arms” to a sparse crowd consisting of passing locals and business men. Watch more from the Take Away shows here.

As 2011 comes to a close we’re starting to see the barrage emergence of  end of year lists.  One of the more respected of these (at least for us in the UK) is Rough Trade Shop’s top ten and Smoke Ring For My Halo comes in at number 3!  Needless to say we’re all stoked for Kurt, ordering from Rough Trade also gets you an exclusive recording of his in-store performance at Rough Trade East from May 2011 as a bonus disc.  Of course, you can still buy it from us too.

Whilst the east coast had all the Violators live action recently, I’m happy to share the news Kurt has more shows lined up, starting 2012 by joining Thurston Moore for some dates, followed by another full-band European tour, including an NME awards show in London.  Kurt and the Violators also play the previously mentioned Australia and New Zealand shows, starting in a few weeks time. All dates below.

Lastly, Pitchfork yesterday ran a feature on the artwork for the newly released So Outta Reach EP as they quizzed Kurt on the series of photos that adorn the EP’s cover.  Questions such as ‘were the photos staged?’, ‘how much tequila does it take to knock Kurt Vile out?’ and ‘how many times did you really get fired from your last job?’ are all answered here.

Snap, Crackle, Pop : The Condo Fucks (with The Great Gaylord) at Norton 25

By Gerard on Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Norton Records is celebrating their 25th anniversary this weekend with a star-studded, 4-night bill at Brooklyn’s Bell House.  We’d like to congratulate Billy Miller and Miriam Linna on their stewardship of one of the planet’s finest labels ; if anyone has done more to document real rock’n'roll, old & new, please don’t tell us about it because we’re running out of room in the record library. The Condo Fucks and longtime associate The Great Gaylord (Fields) were just one of the Friday highlights ; Gaylord wearing earplugs is kind of Rocky Marciano donning a protective headgear. He might be safe, but the rest of us won’t be the same for days.

Green Chili Frittata

By Michael on Friday, November 11th, 2011

A new take on the classic frittata which warms both the kitchen and the cockles is the green chili frittata. Contrary to popular belief the frittata is no longer your mother’s go-to for a pot luck and over the years has taken on myraid variations. The reality is that these days it’s acceptable to make anything into a frittata which is fantastic because of the dish’s versatility. Is it breakfast? Is it lunch? Is it a late-night snack? The simple answer: Yes.

Personally, I like to quench my sweet tooth with a nice banana frittata or if I’m feeling crazy the completely off the wall “Christmas Frittata” (even when it’s not XMas… hehe!!) but I recently tried something a bit more middle of the road and agreeable to everyone. The green chili frittata was great because it retains the familiarity of your standard frittata while adding a hefty kick. It’s like an old friend with a wild new haircut!

And do I even need to mention the frittata’s staying power? It’s just as good after a quick nuke as it is straight from the oven.

10 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 pinch salt
1 7-oz. can diced green chili peppers, drained
1 16-oz. container low-fat cottage cheese
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup melted butter

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease 9×13 inch baking dish. In a large bowl, mix the eggs, flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in the green chili peppers, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese and melted butter. Pour into prepared baking dish. Bake 15 minutes in preheated over. Reduce heat to 325 degrees and continue baking 35 to 40 minutes. Cool slightly and cut into small squares. Enjoy!

Coming March 20, Lee Ranaldo’s ‘Between The Times & The Tides’

By Gerard on Thursday, November 10th, 2011

“Songs can go a million different ways,” declares Lee Ranaldo in the liner notes for his forthcoming Matador solo album, ‘Between The Times & The Tides’, and let me be the first to accuse the Sonic Youth guitarist / not-often-enough vocalist of severe hyperbole. The kinetic, crafted results on ‘Between…’ are more in the several thousand territory, but it’s most certainly a record that will amaze even the most ardent followers of Ranaldo’s work.  Joined by an all-star cast including Nels Cline, Alan Licht, John Medeski, bassist Irwin Menken and longtime associate Steve Shelley (and featuring cameos from old friends Jim O’Rourke and Bob Bert), the album is equal parts smart, confident and loose in a manner that recalls some of our favorite rock’n'roll projects…yet sounds like a fantastic new band that was apparently being assembled right under our noses.

Fresh off a Bell House date last month supporting Wild Flag, Lee and a lineup featuring Alan Licht, Irwin Menken and Steve Shelley will be playing Glasslands, Friday December 16.   2012 tour dates will announced when we have ‘em, and look forward to preorder info from the Matador Store and other outlets shortly as well.

It’s a GIRLS World

By truepanthersounds on Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

This weekend, Girls bowled over a massive crowd at Austin’s Fun, Fun, Fun fest. In a way it was the culmination of the last few months which saw their album Father, Son, Holy Ghost draw pretty universal praise, and the completion of a US tour that really established them as one of the strongest live rock bands going these days. SPIN said the Fun, Fun, Fun fest fest was the “Best Breakout Set” of the festival. We have to agree.

To celebrate we’d like to share a couple of things with you.

First, our friends at iTunes have made Father, Son, Holy Ghost available for a very limited time for only $5.99. If you haven’t copped the record yet, now is the time.

Buy from iTunes HERE

Second, when Girls were here in NYC last time they spent a day with the folks at Pitchfork filming an absolutely beautiful session in an abandoned church in Greenpoint. The band, along with Makeda Francisco, Skyler Lucas and Tracy Nelson, the lovely and talented singers who you may have seen accompany the band on select dates, TORE THROUGH a few of the newer songs. Crushing and awesome.

To view the full session click here.

Luckily for those of you in Europe, the band start a tour there today. As for the States, southern California will play host to two very special nights with Girls in Los Angeles and Santa Ana, in early December. New York in January. For more details about their upcoming US/Euroepan dates and their newly announced single “Lawrence” click HERE

Thank you for reading and for the continued support.
