Announcing Glasser “Ring” out Sept 28

By truepanthersounds on Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Great news today, after over a year of hard work, envisioning, recording, and arranging her debut album, we are honored to announce Glasser‘s Ring will be released September 28, 2010 on True Panther Sounds. Sonically, lyrically and conceptually Ring is a tremendous leap for Glasser and honestly, a brave new world for us as a label. Just EPIC.

Pre-order the album and get an instant mp3 download of album-track “Home” available exclusively here. Hear a little snippet of the track below.
YouTube Preview Image

Glasser is the one-woman orchestra of Cameron Mesirow. Her debut album, Ring, is a singular work. It moves like the wake of a small boat in a still lake: each song its own, but leading to, and becoming, the next. In doing so it builds on the tradition of classic albums like Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, and R. Kelly’s Trapped In the Closet song-cycle: albums that as a whole create stories that are bigger than the sum of their individual songs.

Glasser entered our world in 2009 with her debut EP, Apply. Her intimate, luxurious music struck us as MASSIVE, despite being made by Cameron, alone and in airplanes and shoe stores, on Garage Band. It also drew the attention of Ariel Rechshaid (Cass Mccombs, Foreign Born, We Are Scientists) and Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid (Fever Ray, Blonde Redhead) who worked together with Cameron to re-imagine her musical arrangements, incorporating organic instrumentation like strings, woodwinds, bass, and a wide array of percussion into her once-sparse recordings. Her simple, minimal melodies and rapturous vocals are perfectly complimented by the album’s maximalist arrangements. The voice becomes a focal instrument, delivers abstract stories and sounds that drench the music in emotion without resorting to narrative clichés. It is a wonderful and fully realized accomplishment, an introduction and immersion in Glasser’s world that we’re sure people will want to be a part of for a long time to come.

Robert Pollard Art Show in NYC Aug 27-28

By Nils on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

On August 27 & 28, New York will be graced with “The Public Hi-Fi Balloon,” an exhibit of more than 60 Robert Pollard collages at NYC’s The 45 Space (45 Bond Street, between Lafayette & Bowery), hosted by Vanity Fair’s Michael Hogan and visual artist Todd DiCiurcio.

You know Bob’s work from his album covers (or the 2008 Fantagraphics book of his art), but these are phenomenal pieces that need to be seen in person to fully appreciate.

Opening night is Friday, August 27, from 6-11 PM, and the exhibit will also be open to visitors on the 28th from 2-11 PM.  Check Pollard’s website for more info.

You should also know that Bob Pollard shares a Halloween birthday with Vermeer, Johnny Marr, Ad-Rock, Larry Mullen Jr., and Vanilla Ice.

Casual Victim Pile / Where Are They Now, Pt II ; Love Collector

By Gerard on Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Yesterday’s admittedly incomplete round up of recent activity from Casual Victim Pile alumni glaringly omitted the Austin quartet Love Collector. Not because I wish them DEAD or anything, but rather, since Dave and Robin fucked off to San Francisco for the summer, things have gone a bit quiet on the Love Collector front. As it turns out, however, I was woefully uninformed. Not only are Love Collector returning to the stage August 28 at Beerland (with The Golden Boys and John Schooley’s One Man Band), but director Amedo DiNardo has completed a video for ‘Casual Victim Pile”s “First 48″. Bottle Service‘s tambourine-playing dynamo Joe Ryan makes a cameo appearance, while Shawn and Rob reveal themselves to be track & field’s greatest revelations since Rosie Ruiz.

Fucked Up ‘Year Of The Ox’

Casual Victim Pile – Where Are They Now?

By Gerard on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Not a day goes by during my travels around these great United States that someone fails to accost me and say, “hey mr. record company asshole, what the fuck happened with those las vegas tickets what’s going on with those amazing Austin/Denton bands featured on ‘Casual Victim Pile’?” Since I’m far too busy and successful to actually hang around and converse with these persons in public, I thought I’d write a lengthy blog post on the matter.

The Young – after a pair of singles and one song on CVP, The Young have finally released a debut album on Mexican Summer, Voyagers Of Legend. The entire thing is pretty sick, but “Bird In The Bush” is what us folks in the record business like to call “an undeniable hit”.  At least until it turns out not to be a hit, in which case we start looking for someone else to blame.  If you’re in Austin this Friday and looking FOR ACTION after The New Pornographers show, The Young’s rec release party is happening at 2906 Cole St., with additional sets from Dikes Of Holland (two 2010 7″‘s thus far that you oughta track down), Oakland’s Genesis Climber and the amazing trio Cruddy.

Harlem
– By now, hopefully you’ve fallen in love, or at least very intense like with the songs and performances of Coomers, Curtis and Jose, currently making their way across the country in support of The Dead Weather and flogging their 2nd album, ‘Hippies’ with considerable style and poise.. Potentially Matador’s first candidates to be awarded a Grammy and a Pulitzer For Tweeting in the same calendar year, Harlem will follow last weekend’s appearance at Coney Island’s Siren Fest with an even larger challenge, playing Lollapalooza in Chicago August 7. Rumors they’re supposed to play at 7am and/or are prevented from playing anywhere in the Midwest for the next 3 years are mostly exaggerated.

Wild America – on the heels of a terrific 7″ released by Brooklyn’s Freedom School, Wild America are currently in the midst of a U.S tour.  I’m not gonna say “grueling” because for all we know, they’re having a great time.

7/22 – Bassettt St. House, Madison, WI
7/23 – Lucky Gator Loft, Chicago, IL
7/24 – Loco Lemonade, Bloomington, IN
7/25 – Carabar, Columbus, OH
7/27 – Anarctica, Chattanooga, TN
7/28 – The Hanger, Athens, GA
7/29 – Couch Couch, Atlanta, GA
7/30 – Saturn Bar, New Orleans, LA
8/1 – Superhappyfunland, Houston, TX
8/6 – US Art Authority, Austin, TX (with Happy Birthday, Woven Bones)

There’s obviously more to talk about ;  The Golden Boys are featured participants at this September’s Goner Fest 7, while the band’s John Wesley Coleman is in the middle of a week long residency at Beerland and recently returned from recording his upcoming Goner album w/ assistance from Orville Neely (Bad Sports), Jeremy Steen (The Flesh Lights, Gospel Truth) and longtime associate Greg Ashley.  Bad Sports have hit both coasts this summer and recently completed recording of their second album with knobby help from Mark Ryan of The Marked Men.   Woven Bones are drowning amidst a pile of accolades for their ‘In Out & Back Again’ HoZac LP, recently inked their lives away (JOKE) to Hardly Art and will be supporting Pavement at the oh-so-big-timey Stubbs on September 28.   The Distant Seconds are prepping their 2nd album with engineering supplied by Tre Orsi‘s Matthew Barnhart, while Tre Orsi’s recent LP, ‘Devices & Emblems‘ has been reissued by Jon Solomon’s fantastic Comedy Minus One label, the same imprint that brings Bottomless Pit’s excellent recordings into your homes.   Follow That Bird! completed their first trip to the East Coast recently, and The Stuffies are hitting the road this weekend for shows in Little Rock, AR and Memphis, TN (Hi Tone, Sunday, 7/25).  Elvis are taking part in a bodywashing event (hey, I just report this stuff) at the US Art Authority on July 24     Finally, The Flesh Lights, fast becoming one of the planet’s best live bands, have a new 7″ coming soon from Twistworthy Records (helmed by Mark Twistworthy of CVP alumni The No No No Hopes), and they’ll be at Beerland on Thursday, July 29 with the OBN III’s and Dikes Of Holland.   There’s more CVP related stuff to hassle you about, but trust me, I’m saving it for another post.

Delorean- Real Love (mp3 + tour dates)

By truepanthersounds on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

It’s been a hell of a month for Delorean, since their album Subiza came out June 8th. They just capped off an amazing trip around the US/Canada with an incredible performance at the Pitchfork festival. Guess what though? Things are just getting started. We present you Real Love, the new single from Subiza PLUS a whole new round of tour dates in November with label-mates Lemonade!

Real Love, shows off Delorean’s emotional and recorded textures: layers of synths and drums peppered with Ekhi’s emotional and immediate vocals. It’s at once exhilarating and heart-breaking. The single (available in limited hand-number 12″ and DS) assembles some tremendous remixes as well.

Well, as far as rumours for the Lost Weekend go that might be a little far fetched, but Savage Pencil took the opportunity to imagine how Thurston Moore might enjoy the Matador birthday celebrations in Vegas a little too much later this year.

You can see the comic strip for yourself in the latest edition of The Wire magazine and you can find more of Edwin Pouncey’s excellent Savage Pencil work here.

Magic Kids NYC: Let’s Go Sailin

By truepanthersounds on Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Magic Kids
are taking a one-day break from their nationwide tour with Ariel Pink to take us all out on a boat ride around the East River.

On Monday July 26th, we invite you to come sail around the East River with us and the band. We’ll be sailing on the SS Half Moon, which can fit a fraction of the number of people that Irving Plaza can (where they’ll play the weekend before). It’ll be intimate, joyous, sun-drenched fun. We’ll be kicking off at 8pm, but boat starts boarding at 7. There’s beer and BBQ, and we honestly can’t think of anything better than hearing Magic Kids’ “Sailin’” played full blast while circling around the Statue of Liberty. USA!

Earlier today, we sold out of our initial quantities of tickets and hotel packages for Matador At 21 : The Lost Weekend, taking place October 1, 2, 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort in Las Vegas.  Said sales took somewhere between 2 and 15 minutes to complete, and we sincerely apologize to anyone who was stymied in their attempts to purchase tickets.

We are putting additional tickets on sale tomorrow morning (Saturday, July 10) at 9am pacific time (noon eastern) via Ticketfly.  There are limited quantities of tickets paired with hotel rooms ($SOLD per ticket plus a $SOLD per night room charge, 4 ticket limited per person) a few remaining VIP tickets ($SOLD each plus a $SOLD room charge per night, two ticket limit) and weekend passes only ($SOLD, no hotel reservation required, two ticket limit).

We’re pretty certain these tickets will sell out very quickly.  At present, we cannot guarantee any additional tickets beyond this batch will be offered for public sale, but if that change, we’ll certainly let you know.

Thanks!
